State x State is a project inspired by our love for travel, culture, and design. With the help of talented designers across the 50 states (who also happen to have great taste), we'll be creating travel guides and curating an assortment of locally-made products.
So how will it work?
We will build a network of creative people, including designers, artists, curators, craftspeople, restaurateurs, and mixologists, as well as friends, friends-of-friends, and people we meet, admire, and stalk (not in a creepy way!). And we'll ask for their recommendations for the places they live, work, grew up, or just plain love.
What to do. Where to eat. What to drink. Where to shop. What to buy.
We'll curate the best recommendations in travel guides for each of the 50 states. These guides will be published on our site as well as printed in limited-edition runs.
We also plan to collaborate with selected designers and curators to create state-themed gift boxes featuring up-and-coming independent designers and influential heritage brands. A lot of the same people sharing their favorite local places will be the ones whose products we curate for our state boxes. We'll feature these products plus lots of other great ones in our online marketplace, too.
We'd like your help to get the first set of travel guides researched, produced, and printed.
About our rewards
One of the rewards we're most excited about is our state gift box ($125 and $250 pledges). We've taken a preliminary trip to Portland, OR, met with some very talented designers, and collaborated with them to curate a box full of some of our favorite Oregon-made things. This includes products from Mazama Wares, The Good Flock, Tanner Goods, and Woodblock Chocolate.
Here's a peek at our Oregon box*:
* Please note: We're only producing a limited run of the Oregon State Box for the first 150 backers of our $125 and $250 reward tiers. If you pledge after the first 150 people in these two tiers, you'll get our next state box (state is still TBD!). All of our state gift boxes will follow the same model, so although you may not get the Oregon box, we're sure you'll love what's in the next state box as well.
We've also collaborated with Emily Anderson of The Usual on some illustrations that will be featured on tote bags and postcards. Here's an example of what our tote bag reward could look like (final design TBD):

Thanks for your support!
Risks and challenges
Getting great recommendations may take longer than we currently estimate. We'll mitigate this by being proactive about reaching out to contributors, tapping our networks to help, and making it easy for them to share their favorite places and tips with us.
Design and copy writing may take longer than we currently estimate.
We'll be able to draw on our friends in the design and copy worlds for some extra help if needed.
