About this project
A 2500 square foot creative space in the Staten Island Ferry Terminal for residents & tourists to engage with local art & culture.
Staten Island Arts, 501c3 is building a meeting place and project space called Culture Lounge!
Opening June 2014, Culture Lounge will showcase international and local artists, visual artists, poets, musicians, writers, playwrights and performers.
The space focuses on projects that are place-based and:
- Partner with local communities;
- Help visitors consider their environment in new ways;
- Explore how neighborhoods might be more livable and sustainable;
- Create ways to become more socially engaged.
Staten Island Arts is interested in building a bridge between audiences and artists – creating a unique cultural experience for the 75,000 commuters and tourists who go through the terminal each day. That is over 21 million people a year!
Our goal is to turn passersby into participants — inspiring them to venture past the terminal into Staten Island's cultural hotspots.
Culture Lounge will showcase the borough's unique perspectives and history through exhibits, participatory workshops, performances, lectures, events, and a market featuring a curated selection of artisan goods.
Culture Lounge will house the day-to-day operations of Staten Island Arts. Our cities have public libraries, schools, transportation, and museums. This project will introduce a new kind of civic space into our community. It will be an example for cities across the country!

Empower your inner creator and tinkerer at a 3D Scanning session with Michael Perina, founder of 3dfactory. This perk includes admission for two to this session, where you'll learn about the process and first-hand test an open-source scanner Michael made using an XBOX Kinect and a motorized rotating platform. Includes 2 single-color printed color figurines + hangout time with Michael!
About Michael Perina - Founder of 3dfactory
Michael is a Maker at heart. He launched 3dfactory LLC in 2013. He believes in encouraging the “Maker Movement,” which allows everyone to become an inventor of their visions and he is using his company to achieve just that. Michael’s vision for 3dfactory LLC, and the inspiration for the name, is to enable anyone to set up a virtual factory in their home without expensive equipment or specialized knowledge. In the year since he opened up 3dfactory’s virtual doors, Michael has sold hundreds of open source 3D printer kits enabling hundreds of Makers. His understanding of what motivates tinkerers comes from sharing their passion, with most of his free time spent building a variety of machines from scratch. He has built dozens of 3D printers, as well as a laser cutter and CNC Mill, so he understands the impulse to create. He is pleased that he has been able to help others in their quest for a creative outlet with his work at 3dfactory LLC.

Some Guys Are Better Than Others tells the story of Jim, A Morissey fan, who is brought into an amateur Luchador match where he has to see if he has what it takes to survive. The film stars comedians Tim Duffy, Kevin Devlin, and Casey Jost. Along with Michaelangelo Muniz and a plethora of local familiar faces. Including a special cameo by Impractical Jokers star, Brian 'Q' Quinn! This perk includes 2 tickets to a private screening of the film at the Culture Lounge with a special Q & A with Geoffrey and some of his cast.
About Geoffrey Celis
Geoffrey Celis has been in and around the world of film and television production since 2000. From national cable networks and film companies, to producing award winning independent films and popular viral videos, Geoffrey Celis has been exposed to the volatile environment of movie making. He aspires to create original and entertaining films that will encourage social change.

Larissa Schiano will be offering a 2 hour Yoga and Creative Movement class that will create an opportunity for you to move, feel, express and open up to new possibilities in your life! Come to sweat, to breath and set yourself free! Supporting at this level gets you 2 spots in the class.
About Larissa Schiano Larissa is a SI Dance Artist trained in Horton, Limon, Simonson, and Hawkins Modern Dance techniques. Larissa has been teaching Modern Dance, Afro Modern, Jazz, Tap for over 10 years in Staten Island. She is also a Baptise Power Vinyasa Yoga teacher at 5 Boro Power Yoga, Staten Island NY. Larissa's mission is to create a community for dancers and non-dancers to move, feel, express and live with endless possibility through dance, movement and yoga.

Risks and challenges
Change is not easy. Making a transition from a small basement office into a new 2500 square foot office & project space, in the Ferry Terminal proved even harder!
Originally slated to open to the public in early 2012, Culture Lounge's 2-yr extended timeline has required SI Arts to be adaptive, communicative, & flexible.
Teamwork is key. Staten Island Arts’ leadership, board oversight, and incredibly supportive community (made up of both citywide + SI-based curators, artists, makers, administrators, city officials, developers, consultants, teachers, lawyers, architects, grantees, volunteers, neighbors, and family/friends) have allowed the organization to continue strong programming, fundraising, and all around perseverance throughout this transition.
Whether it took the form of executive leadership carefully attending to construction details, day-to-day staff planning and management of moving timelines, or consistent encouragement and advice from countless community members, Culture Lounge is the product of many persevering hands and minds.
Over the past two years, projects slated for the Culture Lounge were adapted as satellite iterations, reaching new audiences and Staten Island Arts was afforded time to test a new name (formerly COAHSI) and pilot new ideas, workshops, and/or exhibitions to be built on once SI Arts officially moves into the new space.
Looking ahead, SI Arts will continue to be flexible, adaptive, and communicative - maximizing its resources & capacity, exploiting the overwhelming potential of its highly-anticipated move, & accommodating substantial increases in its general operation costs.
The project has already received significant support from the Staten Island Borough President James P. Molinaro, the Lily Auchincloss Foundation, the Richmond County Savings Foundation, the Northfield Foundation, Hyde & Watson Foundation, and multiple private donors have helped pay for the build-out costs.
Kickstarter funds will be spent on critical items to get our space operational. These include sheetrock, moving costs, light fixtures, computers, artist market displays, and security cameras.
