The Twitter, that I once loved, has turned into a completely different place. Seeing people I generally like and agree with subtweeting and attacking others—on top of the world's perpetually bleak news—has begun to gnaw away at my mental health and spiritual wellbeing. It simply isn't what I signed up for.Do you remember how the web used to work? How the web was supposed to work?Launched on 15th of February 2019 Status (https://status.online) is a mastodon powered social networking service that allows you to answer the question, “What is your status?” It works in a similar way, both in look and feel, to Twitter. It has public timelines that are chronological where users, who have @usernaes, are encouraged to share posts.
There are only two kinds of people in the world, those who are addicted to Twitter and those who don’t like Twitter.
Unlike Twitter, the new distributed social network allows posts of 500 characters rather than the 140 on Twitter and it is possible to make individual posts private. https://status.Online seeks to re-create the service's best parts while eliminating its whale-sized problems and satisfies people wanting no ads and offers better tools for privacy and fighting harassment. Post a bunch of things you love. And then find or invite people to follow. That’s all you need to do to see and talk about what’s happening. Congratulations! You’ve just mastered Status.
My server administrator is none other than project director, (hobbyist designer and blogger) and grateful dad, Dean Jones. Jones grew up in London, Islington, and attended St Martins College of Art and Design in 1996. He left in late 2001 and became a Design Lecturer and then eventually a Project Manager and from 2017 to 2018 led on the setup and delivery of a major change programme for the House of Commons and House of Lords, (UK Parliament).
Jones said "Status.Online Social Network is not an alternative silo: instead, it’s what you build when you believe that the web itself is the great social network. I’m @dean on status.online, but if you want to be @dean on mastodon.social, no one’s going to stop you. In this sense, Mastodon hosted on status.online is less like Facebook and more like email as you can still send mail to other users on another server which is the best part of being part of a decentralised network of servers."
Jones said, ”We do not throttle or manipulate our users’ streams. We respect our your privacy, and we listen to and trust our users,”Status.online’s manifesto is to promote freedom of expression and internet freedom and respect one’s right to remain anonymous.Status.Online Social Network is the best place for people everywhere to let their hair down, have some fun and share the things they love. status.online is for anyone who respects, enjoys, is entertained by, or participates in online social networking and is available on the web and via mobile web.But more than anything, the change in social networks has given me a new lease on digital life. After years of feeling anxious and unhappy checking my tweets and keeping up my personal brand, it’s like I’ve moved to a new town where nobody knows me, but everyone is looking to make new friends.Isn’t that why we all signed up for this stuff in the first place? The funds will go towards monthly server costs over the first year of operation. If we secure more than the funding goal, funds will go towards sequent year costs to ensure the longevity of the website.
£400 Server cost for 1 Year (Mastodon hosted on status.online Server Costs)£400 renewal of domain name for 1 Year (Status.Online)Client apps (mobile, desktop or alternative web clients) interacting with the Status.Online Server API are available for a range of systems, including Android, iOS, SailfishOS and Windows Mobile.
Unlike Twitter, you can see public timelines on Status.Online without having to follow anyone. These timelines are also strictly reverse chronological, with no algorithm to decide that some posts are more important than others.
Toots have a 500 character limit
Each toot is limited to 500 characters, unlike Twitter’s 140 character limit. History 'For those just tuning in, Mastodon is a re-implementation of the GNU Social codebase, which itself is an implementation of the OStatus protocol, originally forking from the GNU FM project and later merging with the StatusNet and FreeSocial projects, from the same people behind Identi.ca, which was later folded into pump.io, which uses the ActivityStreams spec along with protocols like PubSubHubBub, Salmon, WebFinger, and Atom syndication to deliver a federated, open-source Twitter-like experience for the masses.)
Status is: Built for real conversation
With 500 characters at your disposal and support for granular content and media warnings, you can express yourself the way you want to.
You’re a person, not a product
Mastodon is not a commercial network. No advertising, no data mining, no walled gardens. There is no central authority.
Always within reach
Multiple apps for iOS, Android, and other platforms thanks to a developer-friendly API ecosystem allow you to keep up with your friends anywhere.
A more humane approach
Learning from failures of other networks, Mastodon aims to make ethical design choices to combat the misuse of social media.
Risks and challenges
There is a risk that the funding goal is not achieved and that I would therefore have to initially fund this project directly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
