Celebrating and elevating local business and talent.
Hi my name's Holly and my kickstarter campaign is to set up Butterfingers – a space that champions local producers, talent and businesses.
I live in Redfield, Bristol, an area with a beautiful park, fantastic pubs and more recently a bakery. While the area is gaining more new residents and local interest, our high street is still in need of a bit of a revival. I want to make sure we stake a claim for local business!
I've been working hard over the last 10 months running a monthly market in our community park. The market has a focus on food, made locally, providing the opportunity for those that have set up their own business to share their talents and produce with others in the area. It's been so well received and has cemented my belief that people in this area want to shop locally and support small businesses.
So it's time to make this a more permanent feature of our high st.
During the day the space will run as a shop - a community convenience store. We'll have fresh fruit and veg, meats and cheese, all the essentials you could need....but with one difference. We'll be sourcing from local producers and suppliers.
It won't just be the store cupboard essentials though, I'll be constantly on the look out for those special items; like fresh pasta from Bedminster, charcuterie cured in Montpelier and perhaps a snifter of gin distilled in Bristol.
And that's not all, we'll also be convenient. Open in the hours that work for you, proving that convenience doesn't have to be at the expense of quality and flavour.
In the evenings and on closed days we'll be offering the space to hold workshops, talks and supper clubs. So whether you're a street food stall that wants to offer an extended menu, or you're a silk artist using botanical dyes, this space will provide you with a platform to share your talent and skills.
Before we open though there's lots to do!! The space is still very much a building site and I want to try and be as sympathetic to the original space as possible – I mean, look at those windows!!
For any deli the biggest cost is the counters and chillers, to ensure that all food is not only beautifully displayed but also that it's stored properly and kept safe. Everyone needs coffee so I want to invest in getting the right equipment to help you start your day right. Then of course for the supper clubs and pop ups we'll need to kit out the kitchen with more fridges, freezers, an oven etc. There's lots of licensing laws that need approval from the council to allow me to stock and sell you the best Bristol has to offer when it comes to beers and spirits.
I've got high hopes and big plans for reducing our plastic use, things like free pouring grains, mueslis etc and of course all these things are additional bits of retail installations.
BUT it's all worth it!
By contributing to this Kickstarter you'll not only be helping me to fit out the space but you'll be part of a bigger support network that helps to elevate and celebrate our local talent.
Risks and challenges
As with any new business there's always a risk, but I feel that my background in food branding and marketing, my experience of founding and running the BS5 Market and the genuine support from the local community will all help in building on the success of this little endeavour of mine.
I've prepared as much as I can to ensure that this business is a success, not just for me but to show that we can reclaim our high st. So I've done the maths, reviewed and re-reviewed margins, I'm attending workshops and taking exams, all of which are helping me to prepare as much as I can for this venture into the unknown.
Kickstarter is all about community so if you have any questions then get in touch or if you have any suggestions again get in touch - you might know something I don't and will ultimately help me be even more prepared!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
