Hey Kristi - Not sure what you mean the pen doesn't work. it's the top of the line Fisher Ink Cartridge and I have NEVER seen one not work right off the bat! BUT, anything is possible... can you email us at statgear@gmail with the specific pen issues? To change out the ink cartridge - - put the ink cartridge into the spring and load into the pen bottom. Put the black metal adapter on the end of the ink cartridge. The adapter has a hole which must line up with the notch for the bolt action. - (you might have to use some other thin object to slightly push down on the pen adapter t line up the hole correctly) - screw the bolt action knob into the hole of the adapter. and you're good to go! To activate the pen you use the bolt knob.
