About this project

I'm an award-winning poet and I write weekly four-minute radio essays called Observations from a Working Poet for my local community station. I've written 215 of them so far, gratis. People love them, and I love writing them. They're haphazardly funny, poignant, fierce and/or edifying, and always thoughtful. And I have a good voice for radio. You can listen to one here as a podcast and see what you think. http://kvmr.org/programs/fisk/index.html

I want to grow my audience, get more famous, and eventually get paid for my work. This is where you can help. I'm asking for funding to market the essays to radio stations nationally (contact station managers, program directors, and broadcasters, send out podcasts and CDs, make a fabulous postcard and mail it, travel to do poetry readings where certain radio stations are located). I've just received a $5000 grant (yippee and many thanks!) from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting through KVMR-FM Nevada City, CA, and I'm looking to match that funding through Kickstarter.

But I'm not just looking for funding. Even if you don't have a spare dollar for my project, telling your friends about it, and me, would be a great benefit to the enterprise, and I thank you in advance if you're able to spread the word. It's one of the great things about Kickstarter, I think: how many interesting projects there are and how much fun it is to follow people who are trying to accomplish something in the arts.

You can find me on Facebook for random updates, links, writing prompts, and occasional new poems, and to join in a wide-ranging conversation among contemporary poets.

29 Backers

Receive a year's subscription of essays (e-mailed weekly to yourself or a friend), plus my CD Blow-Drying a Chicken and access to behind-the-scenes updates, website acknowledgment, and a copy of the fabulous postcard.

Pledge $89 or more Pledge $89 or more

11 Backers

Receive all of the above, a hand-written thank you note, PLUS I will use a word of your choice in one of my essays (the word has to meet FCC regulations, though, so we don't incur huge fines or get a station closed down — you wouldn't want to do that...). (This unusual dollar amount is a nod to 89.5 FM, the frequency of KVMR, in Nevada City, CA, where my essays originate.)

Pledge $125 or more Pledge $125 or more

5 Backers

Receive all of the above and a copy of my latest book of poems, The More Difficult Beauty, about which the poet Molly Peacock says “...returns emotion to the American poem with its supple lines... Candor and humor are her hallmarks in these poems, marvels of sheer whimsy and broad, wicked observations.” Wasn't that great of her?

If you live within three hours of San Francisco, I will drive to your house and give you and your friends a private poetry reading. You'll also receive the benefits everyone else is getting. If you're not within three hours of San Francisco, but are in a city where I'm doing a poetry reading during 2011 (I don't know where that is yet, but will keep you posted), I'll come to your house and give you and your friends a private reading. If you're anywhere else, I'll give you a private reading via Skype. Poetry readings are generally 20-40 minutes long and I do take requests.

0 Backers • Limited Reward (1 of 1 remaining)

All of the above rewards plus I will accompany you to Burning Man 2011 and write you a poem while we're there. (If you don't know what Burning Man is, look for it on Google.) You can pool your money with friends to pledge this much (and make room for my tent in your theme camp), but it will be one poem about all of you, not individual poems. (I look very fetching in goggles and face mask, you might even mistake me for Edna St. Vincent Millay, the female poet from history most likely to have gone to Burning Man...)
