Here are the first two minutes of the film so you can see how it’s coming along.
“Fantasmántico” tells the story about Nas, a sweet ghost who is afraid of thunder but very much in love. One night, during a storm, he hides in an abandoned Hacienda where he finds the love of his after life. Now he must overcome his fears if he wants to meet the girl of his dreams.
The project is made with 2D Digital Animation, handmade watercolor backgrounds, original music and a lot of passion and love. For our visual style we wanted something similar to Disney movies from the 60’s. To achieve this we made all of our backgrounds by hand using watercolors (You can totally buy one of these as a reward). We also wanted to represent the colonial architecture you can see in some beautiful buildings in Querétaro which we are incredibly fond of.
The music is very important for us so we want to make the best possible score to accompany the film. And our wishes came true when we met Edgar Lozano, a talented young compositor who showed us his work and we fell in love the moment we heard it. Edgar understood perfectly how we wanted the shortfilm to sound and made the amazing music you hear on the sneak peak.
We chose to make a ghost story because we are all great fans of legends and mystery, a very important part of Mexican culture, but we also wanted to talk about fear and how love and a different perspective can overcome it. Sometimes we are all so wrapped up in our insecurities we forget to see the beauty of the world, hopefully this film will inspire people to see the world in a more positive way.
All the preproduction and layouts are done, we just need to finish the animation and score the film. The film needs to be done by January next year, so we can submit it to film festivals, and most importantly to Annecy, our main goal.
We have more than 30 backgrounds. Here are some examples.
Every frame is drawn by hand. That means we draw 24 frames per second!! This is a small video explaining part of the process of we do for animation.
All of us have been friends since college, where we worked together on a lot of projects, of course we would end up creating this studio together. Casa Cocuyo is an Animation and Illustration studio that wants to focus on amazing story telling with great characters, beautiful visuals and wonderful music. We usually work for clients or other studios, and now we want to create our first short film and submit it to Annecy, one of the most important animation festivals. Each one of us has been specializing on different aspects of animation so together we can create the best possible job.
To know a little bit more about the projects we have worked on, here is our web page.
Any support you can give us will seriously help us finish our project and in exchange we have some pretty cool rewards. You can even get an original watercolor background used on the film. As you can see, there are a bunch of empty paintings on the film and you can be in one of them! Just send us a photo* and we´ll make it an illustration and add it to one of the frames. There are limited frames so you better be quick. **
*we reserve the right to decide if the photo is appropriate for the film.
** In case we can´t contact you for the photo, please send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Here are the image of the rewards and BACKGROUNDS you can have.
There are 3 types of backgrounds. All of them are watercolored and with inked line art. Scroll down to see all 33 different background. The "Tier 11" ones are the biggest, hurry up!

This are our stretch goals in case we get more money than expected.
Risks and challenges
Well, the worst thing that can happen is that we don’t finish the film by January, but the film will be done, with or without Kickstarter, additional animators or live music. We are very passionate about this project and we will finish it no matter what.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
