Like a modern-day Candide, writer C.J. Campbell started his journey to achieve peace in the bosom of a safe environment with a well-meaning adviser to guide him, and like Candide, he journeyed out into a world where everything went wrong, sometimes in hilarious ways, sometimes in excruciatingly heartbreaking ways, but always in entertaining ways. Seven years of his travels are painstakingly detailed in his memoir The Zen of Beard Trimming. Punk rock meets leaving Christian Evangelism meets Scandanavian models meets a mismatched cast of unlikely characters and scenarios in a fearless, brutally honest chronicling of the time-honored search for (meaning, love, peace, an apartment, food, and a damn microphone that works).
C.J. Campbell is a speaker, writer, and activist from Rockford, IL He has spent the last 10 years sharing stories with a wide range of crowds from small dive bars to college classrooms. He is currently working as The Director of Storytelling at Conveyor, an art studio that incorporates storytelling into varied art mediums in Rockford. He keeps a blog called The Running Search. When not being pretentious enough to believe what he thinks and feels should be shared with whoever will listen, he sometimes can be found at shows supporting the local music scene, because he still believes that you don't have to be a scumbag to be punk rock.
The Zen of Beard Trimming is the third book in the Zombie Logic Press Rock River Valley Literary Series, an attempt to find and give voice to the most talented, forceful, and innovative literary talents in the Rockford area. Located at the heart of America's 3rd most dangerous neighborhood, Zombie Logic Press firmly believes the written word, and the entire art community will be a prime mover in the emergence of Rockford from one of its darkest eras to a model city of perseverance, tenacity, and innovation.
Zombie Logic Press prides itself on knowing we publish more than books, we create works of art we fully expect to become heirlooms. With this in mind, we continue our tradition of incredible cover art by employing the talents of Jenny Mathews of The Rockford Illustrating Company, who created the cover in conjunction with the vision of the author.
Risks and challenges
The Zen of Beard trimming is a manuscript in the true meaning of the word in that it is already the work of many hands. The author's hands are wracked with pain from cerebral palsy, and the entire book was dictated to several volunteers, so by the time it reached the editor's desk it was already the work of multiple hands. Literally. In that sense one of the first challenges of The Zen of Beard Trimming was simply the amount of care and concern that was shown by so many people simply to commit this story to paper.
Zombie Logic Press has a reputation of being on time and delivering the highest quality books available on the market currently. We work with a high quality printer in the Midwest and spare no expense in the production phase to ensure our books are more than just portable manuscripts... they are works of art in themselves. Jenny Mathews of The Rockford Illustrating Company designed the cover art, in conjunction with the author's vision, and one of the challenges as an editor/publisher is always to design a visually striking and appealing book inside and out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
