I am Zoe and I am an artist & illustrator based on the Isle of Wight. My love of reading fairytales and penchant for my old-fashioned dip pen and pot of ink inspires me to create quirky hand drawn illustrations for both adults and children. Some of my clients include the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Hoodles Playbarn & Coffee Shop and more locally Style of Wight Magazine, the House of Chilli and Lander & May.

Reasons behind the book...
In a few months time I will be exhibiting my illustration work at the Quay Arts Centre, the Isle of Wight's leading art gallery and centre for live arts events. To coincide with this I plan to produce a 32 page full colour children's paperback picture book entitled The Lighthouse Keeper: A Cautionary Tale which can be pre-ordered curteousy of kickstarter pledges and the remains of the edition available from the Quay Arts Centre throughout the duration of the exhibition.
You can find out more about the Quay Arts Centre here.
This project and the production of the 'Lighthouse Keeper' as my first book is a really important milestone for me. Not only is this project a culmination of much of my creative work to date but it also pinpoints a new direction within my work. I have always had a really strong passion for books and book illustration, in particular for children, and this is the direction I am focussing toward with my illustration work.
This book was inspired by my love of books, my love of the sea and where I live, as well as the direction I really want to take my work. This project will also test all my skills as an illustrator and my past experiences within publishing. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to enhance my personal portfolio with a truly amazing project and really kickstart my career within the publishing world.
After the project reaches completion I will be working hard towards other book projects and potential outlets within publishing for my art and illustration work. I would love it you would be willing to follow my progress with me and I really appreciate all your support and encouragement- it means the world to me!
About the book…
This is a hapless tale of a lighthouse keeper- who, well, just isn't very good at his job, or is he? What happens to the little boat that approaches the lighthouse? Does it get guided in by the beam of the lighthouse or does it go down in a watery whirl!
I have illustrated and written the book myself although I must admit had quite a bit of help editing the latter!
This picture book will be a numbered limited edition produced specifically in conjunction with my exhibition. A selection of the original artwork can also be viewed throughout the exhibition, which will run in the Rope Store Gallery at Quay Arts, from the 22nd June to the 5th July 2014.
This project is not about mass producing my children's book but is a special limited edition created to coincide with the exhibition. It will only be available until the kickstarter limited edition is sold out.
Of course this does mean I need your help to make my book project happen so please do make a pledge and reap the rewards. If I don't make my goal then the project won't happen however the existing illustration work from the book will still be exhibited throughout the course of the exhibition along with my other works of art!
So to give you the lowdown on what you will receive on behalf of pledging towards my project rewards include:-
- Listed as contributors in the picture book
- The E-book
- Hard copies of the paperback book itself
- Limited edition prints from the book
- Even some original reproductions from the book itself- which include snippets from the storyboard I created to plan the book out, cover art and double page layout artwork.
If you have chosen a reward where it says you will receive a print or original artwork of your choosing, the e-book will be sent in advance, so you can choose your favourite scene(s) from the book. I will then ship your favoured option to you.
I also have some further (stretch) goals in mind just in case I hit the ground running and reach my target early. These might include an additional run of hardback books, premium printing options and other potential goodies like postcards and stickers. You will just have to wait and see!
So please do give me that kickstart I need to create my first ever children's picture book!
- First of all my budget includes the printing of the book- it will be 32-34 pages and will have an 8.5x11 portrait book format- have to fit that lighthouse in! I will initially produce a limited edition of 250 paperback books. If I storm through my target with more than 200 backers then I will extend the edition so there are enough books for my kickstarter backers and for the exhibition.
- The purchase of ISBN numbers for the picture books.
- A large chunk also has to be set aside for shipping all the books and rewards to you all.
- The printing of the limited edition prints.
- The printing of 'Lighthouse' bookmarks to all those who make a pledge!
- Lastly to cover the 8-10% kickstarter fees.
Most of the money is towards the production costs of the book as I will edit and design the book myself. A slight contingency has been added for anything unforeseen and to cover studio costs to create any original extras!
Risks and challenges
The story has been written and planned out page by page so I know exactly how the story goes and how much work I have to do before I start!
The first 4 of 14 double page spreads have already been finished!
So basically I have 3 months in total to complete the rest of the project- so a good 2 months to get the remaining 10 illustrations completed and the layouts ready for printing. I have also factored in 1 month to get the books printed and delivered to my door in plenty of time- I have already researched the costs involved in the book printers and how long the process will take.
The e-book is a first for me so that will be a bit more of a challenge. However I am very capable with most technical aspects my artwork. I have also carefully researched where to get the e-book put together properly so this has all been factored in to the plan!
Lastly there is getting all the rewards shipped off to you. As I am also getting ready for the exhibition all rewards will be shipped once the exhibition is up and running. Any original artwork to be created will be started at the end of the exhibition and shipped off to you within three months of the end of the exhibition.
I will endeavour to get everything ready and shipped to you as soon as I possibly can!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
