Initial Funding Goal Surpassed! Now we aim ever higher: Help make Dusty PlayGround Volume 2 – For The Elders!
I am so grateful to have received such incredible support for this project. Thanks to the generosity of my backers, Dusty PlayGround – For The Littlest Burners, will be printed!
The story does not stop with the children, however – it is book-ended by the silver-haired 'kids', the wisely playful elders, whose presence in Black Rock City is as significant as that of the Littles.
Having secured funding for Volume 1, I've now set my sights on an ambitious stretch goal of $60,000 to bring BOTH volumes to life.
For more than a decade, I have participated in the once yearly creation of Black Rock City – 'a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance' known as Burning Man – the gathering of tens of thousands of 'Burners' in Nevada's Black Rock Desert (fondly referred to as 'The Playa'.) It has profoundly influenced who I’ve become, both as an individual and as an artist.
It's not just the joyful celebration, nor the ambitious art that inspires my annual pilgrimage, but something far less tangible that I repeatedly return to, despite the noisy grandeur of it all.
I have never been able to describe it in words, relying instead on the magic of photography to speak for me.
Burning Man, defying explanation, is a photographer's dream – a full-spectrum city bursting with colorfully exuberant characters, surreal art cars overflowing with revelrous Burners, incredibly inspired art rising from the dust and massive structures engulfed in flames.
As the world becomes more aware of this event, we are inundated with countless dynamic images of these well-documented themes, giving some sense of the scope and scale.
Yet...there is a softer, more subtle side to the story...a gentler, more quietly human element that I find most compelling.
Meandering beneath all that impressive art...woven amongst all those expressive adults rediscovering more carefree, imaginative parts of themselves, are the beautiful children who haven't yet forgotten.
This book is for them – for the Littlest Burners, and the amazingly generous parents who gift us with their presence.
The Children of Black Rock City
Since my first ‘Burn’ 15 years ago, I have been fascinated by the children of Black Rock City. They are awesome creatures who seem so effortlessly at ease, playful little sages covered in dust who remind me always to be curiously present, fearlessly open and light of heart. Without their youthful spark – without the generational diversity they represent – Burning Man would not be a true community.
Though they are the primary focus of this project, it is not just about the kids – it's about the depth of the culture evidenced by their presence.
For thousands of us, this is not just an annual gathering. It is a way of life – the conscious, intentional choice to actively co-create alternative communities where we are given permission to connect more deeply with imagination, to nurture creativity and self-express boldly – where we celebrate the individuality of 'others', in all our myriad shapes and colors – where 'gifting' is the agreed upon currency, encouraging us to ask what we might offer rather than what we might gain...how we may contribute rather than simply consume.
It makes sense that individuals whose lives have been so transformed by this culture would bring their children into it. The kids are not simply peripheral, not brought out of obligatory necessity solely to allow the parents to attend. For these Burners, it is not a question of sacrificing their own experience – it is the most naturally obvious choice to share what they know to be a truly enriching experience with those closest to them.
Through early exposure to such revolutionary concepts, imagine what kind of world these kids might someday create.
Theirs is a world I hope to grow old in.
In the Words of Burner Parents
About the book – Dusty Playground
Set to publish in June 2016, Dusty PlayGround, will be an 11"x11" hardcover with 70 pages of candid portraits featuring the kids and families of Black Rock City, including words from the parents and children pictured therein.
Having spent several years photographing festivals, with a particular focus on kids and families, I feel well-primed to undertake this project with sensitivity and respect – ready to honor these little Burners with a truly beautiful work of art.
This is the greatest gift I can offer the community that has, in so many ways, shaped who I've become.
I have the the blessing of Burning Man HQ as well as many parents whose children I've already photographed, yet the story is only partially represented...the pages, only partly full.
Bringing this book to life will take a lot more than the dream that compels me to create it. Doing it well will require a significant investment that I am not presently capable of funding independently.
This is where you come in.
Your generous support will help cover:
- Post-Production, Book Design & Marketing

- Self-Publishing & Distribution of Dusty PlayGround.
- Assistants – For both On-Playa & Production
- Burning Man 2015 *While I have a selection of photos pre-approved for printing, most of the images for this book will be photographed this year.
- Replacement Camera Equipment *Shooting in harsh environments, including the last 3 Burns, has taken a serious toll on my camera.
- Cleaning & Servicing for my gear post-BM 2015 *Alkaline dust is incredibly unkind to electronics.
I've created some pretty awesome rewards (listed to your right & below) including Limited Edition Postcards & Prints (*Kickstarter Exclusive – only available through this campaign), Portrait Sessions, Event Coverage, Skype Tutorials, a Photography 'Walkabout' with me (!!!) and, of course, the Book!

Risks and challenges
My estimated delivery date of June 2016 is contingent upon all running smoothly, both before Burning Man and upon returning home. Naturally, one would hope that all would flow easily, but...as the project is birthing primarily of my own creativity and personal effort, the need to support myself and possibly carry other projects simultaneously always exists. That pressure has the potential to slow me down a bit. However, I am giving everything I've got to this project and intend to keep this level of attention until the book is printed and in your hands.
While I am taking every precaution, researching every possible detail in regards to both the creation of the book and crowd-funding, I'll be the first to admit that, on both accounts, this is my first time undertaking such projects. It's a lot to take in – the layers are many and I am learning as I go. As such, I am well aware that unforeseen complications may arise. I am committed to seeing this through, however, and I will maintain clear communication with all collaborators as the project unfolds, providing regular updates regarding how the production is coming along.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
