The modern world was wracked with violence and instability. Nations crumbled and fell apart, and cities were left to fend for themselves. Now your neighboring cities have mobilized their military might and are marching against you. Rally your work force and gather your army. This Means WAR! A strategically challenging card game for 2-4 players.
War! War has broken out across a once peaceful land. Allies have turned into hostile enemies. Players, called Grafmarshalls, take turns issuing orders to their city in an attempt to destroy the other cities until only one is left victorious. How will you spend your resources: building up your PRODUCTION to generate more RESOURCES, ASSAULT your enemy's WALLS and CITY every turn, or getting your LABOR and RESEARCH to develop the perfect city? The choice is yours, because This Means War!
This Means War! has a few key design features that make this game unique and challenging:
1. Resources: Players always gain resources and can calculate a couple turns in advance what cards they want to play or how to set up a big power play. Watch out; your opponents can also play cards that will disrupt your plans.
2. Card Draw: This Means War! emphasizes frequent card draw. Each time you discard a card, you draw. Each time you play a card, you draw. This means that the cards in your hand-and therefore your strategy-constantly changes throughout the game.
3. Options: This Means War! Is a game of options and choices. Cards and opportunities abound for the player to make unique and interesting choices. Limited resources force the player to make decisions about the longterm effects of their action, rewarding strategy.
4. Players Share a Card Pool: Each player has equal opportunity to have any card. It also means that if you have the card in your hand, chances are that they don’t.
The following images are examples of cards that will be included in the game.
The base game includes 144 full-color front and back cards (310 gsm ivory core) in a sturdy top-and-bottom box with matte finish and a full-color rule booklet.
Our stretch goals are intended to improve the quality of our game overall. Each stretch goal reached (unless otherwise stated) will change the status of the games moving forward.
Every stretch goal reached during the campaign will be included in every copy of This Means WAR! That means, the more funding we receive, the more you get (at no extra cost to you!) The base funding level includes everything you need to have an awesome experience with This Means WAR!.
In addition, in order to add a Kickstarter exclusive bit of flair to your experience, we want to add a special emblem over the title and scope on the box. What the emblem will look like, and whether or not we reach that point, will be determined on our Facebook page.
We plan to use Panda Game Manufacturing, an experienced and reputable manufacturer to manufacture the game. You can learn more about Panda Games and previous games they've produced at their website.
In order to be fully funded, we'll need somewhere around 800 backers, which is a lot of games to ship by hand! That's why we are talking with a couple different fulfillment companies at the moment to decide which one will fulfill all the pledges from the project. As pledges come in we will be better able to determine which company to choose since their rate structures vary slightly.
Shipping information is included in the pledge levels to the right. If you are a US backer, no additional amount for shipping is needed. For international backers, there is an additional cost to ship the product directly to you.
These add-ons are, at this time, Kickstarter exclusive. If you wish to purchase a This Means War! KS exclusive playmat or T-Shirt, please add $20 to your pledge and leave a note indicating your selection.
The reality is that the game is ready to be made. Our goal with Kickstarter is to make This Means War! the best possible game it can be. That's why our stretch goals are things that will improve the core game itself-better tokens, better packaging, better cards, a better play experience in general. We believe This Means War! is a game that needs to be made and we want to share it with as many people as we can! If we successfully reach funding, we all benefit together, and every stretch goal we reach gives everyone even more. That's why we chose Kickstarter. Kickstarter is more than just a "crowd-funding" platform, it's a way to form a community around a creative project, and Kickstarter is arguably the best venue for sharing creative works like This Means War! with the world.
With Kickstarter, we get to work together as a team with all of you to make This Means War! a reality. The comments section of this campaign is also a great way to talk about this project and to collaborate as a community to continue to build the world of This Means War!. If you have comments, ideas or suggestions, share them on this page for everyone to see.
We've spent a lot of time looking at the numbers to find the optimal balance between the cost of the pledge levels and overall funding goal. It works a little like this: the more we ask for pledge levels, the fewer the backers we need to cover our costs of manufacturing and fulfillment (we've already invested the money for the art and design work), but the more we ask for pledge levels, the less of a discount you get from the final retail price.
We've priced This Means WAR! competitively, but also so the project can be funded faster. Since our minimum manufacturing quantity is 1,500 units, at the funding goal we've selected of $12,500, we've ensured we'll be able to produce a high quality product from a reliable manufacturer at a reasonable price and ship the game directly to you without losing more money than we are able to commit to the project.
It only costs us about $11,250 to manufacture 1500 units of the game and have them shipped to our warehouse in the US, but it costs us about $6 per game to ship directly to you in the US (more world wide). This means our costs increase with the number of backers. Our funding goal of $12,500 has been selected because it is the point at which we can produce the game AND get it shipped directly to you (and all the backers) without losing more money than we are currently able to commit to the project.

Risks and challenges
We've worked hard to minimize the risks of backing this project. This has included months of research, play testing and prototyping. We have a manufacturer, the artwork (aside from three cards) is complete, and the game, in its current state, is able to be made and shipped out within a month.
Despite our front-end work, however, there are still risks and challenges we could encounter in the completion of This Means WAR!. In fact, the project was initially supposed to launch in 2014. However, we were forced to take a 4 year break because we would rather give you a quality product than fail like so many projects have in the past.
Possible risks include:
-Personal illness or death: There are only four of us working on this project, so if one of us suffers a personal tragedy, this could delay or cancel the project before it is completed.
-Natural disaster or other "act of God": We simply cannot forsee certain risks.
-First Kickstarter: Although this is the first Kickstarter project we've created, its not the first game we've designed or the first time we've been involved in shipping large volumes of units overseas. Nevertheless, there may be ways we could run a project better that we haven't yet discovered. We don't intend to treat this as a learning project (that would be unfair to you!), but there is
-Unexpected costs: We have researched as many expenses as possible to ensure all our bases are covered, but as with any project there may be other costs we run into down the road that could slow the project down.
Despite the risks, we are committed to making This Means WAR! a successful project. We are doing this project because we want you to play and enjoy TMW!. Furthermore, both DFM Games and Mad Hat Programmers have a vested interest in producing a great product for you so we can continue to make great games in the future and have your support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
