Bronze has always been closely linked to the sea as it is one of the most corrosion resistant metals available. An oxide layer, called a patina, forms a protective skin over time to protect the metal. This patina individualizes each Helmsman, creating completely unique pieces. What starts out as a shiny rose-gold, ages with the atmosphere into a rustic brown.
"The Thinker" by Auguste Rodin in Bronze
The patina is easily confused for rust, but the underlying metal merely hidden below. Restoration to its original shine is possible with the use of commonly available cleaning agents.
By combining this rustic metal with the latest in industrial and product design, we have come up with the ideal conversational piece for your wrist.
If you prefer sleek sophistication and pristine perfection, the Helmsman is also offered in 316L Surgical Grade Stainless Steel.
We wanted to create the Helmsman to be a modern sports watch, functional yet sleek enough to take with to the office. Its automatic movement powers the watch by your kinetic energy so no batteries will ever be needed. This is accomplished with the complex use of minuscule gears and springs to give each watch an infinitely beating heart.
Each variant of the Helmsman will be limited to only 50 pieces and will be individually numbered, so act quick to reserve yours!
We at Zelos strive to build the Helmsman with the finest features comparable to a Swiss luxury watch without the exorbitant price tag.

UNLOCKED Goal #1 - 45,000CAD
Rose Gold PVD Rotor - We wanted to offer more value for all of you guys yet keeping the features of the Helmsman unique among watches of its price range. A PVD rotor makes the exhibition back something you'd want to show off instead of a plain silver movement!
Here's the actual pictures of the movement which ALL watches will come with!
We began designing a watch that could be used interchangeably in both formal and casual settings while having the features of a luxury watch priced in the thousands.
Swap the strap out for a classy crocodile hornback (sold separately)
An internal diving bezel was chosen instead of the traditional rotating bezel to keep the design sleek. Cutouts on the sides of the case were also used to evoke a modern style while ridding the Helmsman of a typically bland side profile.
Being watch collectors at Zelos, the smallest details had to be studied and continuously reiterated to define perfection. The casing had to be finished perfectly. We chose a sandblast for the side cutouts, brushed finish which mask scratches for most of the bezel and casing, with polished edges to highlight the contours. Brushing and polishing of the case will be done by hand with care, surpassing the abilities of machinery.
Although it might seem to be an oversight of having the crowns and caseback in steel instead of bronze, this was chosen for a reason. When in contact with the skin, it may leave green traces of non-toxic oxide on the wearer which could be unsightly, hence the steel caseback. Also, with the fine tolerances required for a screw down crown, having patina or oxide buildup within the threads might affect its operation.
Exhibition back with signed rotor
For most watch nerds, the movement of the watch could make or break the purchase. We chose the Miyota 9015 as it offers an excellent balance between price and reliability. They are touted to be as reliable as the movements from ETA, it also offers all the same features like a 28800 beat rate(better timing), hacking (stops when the crown is pulled out to enable accurate setting of time) and manual winding(quick boost to power as compared to shaking it). Lower cost options such as those from Seagull are out of the question from us as they lie far below our expectations.
Even the design of the dial was spared no expense. The dial has 3 levels to create a sense of depth, with the embossed lines reminiscent of a ship’s deck.
Our logo is engraved on the crown, buckle and rotor which mark of most luxury watches.
Packaging was also an important consideration.
Having collected far too many watch display boxes, we wanted something more practical. We designed a leather travel roll which stores your watch, a couple of spare straps and a strap-changing tool, all coupled as a set.
Having a bronze watch, we wanted a leather strap that would exhibit the same character as the metal. Oil-tanned leather was chosen as it evolved according to how it was worn. A black leather strap is important for a formal occasion and finally, a NATO is perfect for a quick swim or dive.
We need your help for funding
We have the final production samples from a reliable manufacturer and are ready to begin full production. CAD files for the mold are ready as well and are awaiting the signal to begin work. This manufacturer has worked with us for months and has fulfilled orders for many other brands of watches. Quality has been verified to be excellent from the prototypes received.
The funds raised from Kickstarter will be used to pay for full production of the watch and accessories.
-Tooling and mold costs
-Raw materials for cases, straps and packaging
Production is due to begin in April and will be finished in May. Some time will be needed to do crucial testing such as waterproofing and timing tests. We want to have the Helmsman in our backers hands as soon as possible without sacrificing quality.
My name is Elshan Tang and I'm the founder of Zelos.
Zelos is Greek for zeal which expresses my passion for wristwatches and the primary reason why Zelos was founded. From a young age, I have always had a fascination for kinetic mechanisms, and I have been drawn to watches ever since I discovered the detailed perfection of watch designs. After collecting watches for a decade, I realized the high prices were mainly due to brand inflation. Having completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering which provided the relevant skills, I decided to design my very own watch to prove that quality could be had at a fraction of the price. I began working on this project a year ago and I am proud to present my pioneer design that could only be possible with your help. Zelos aims to be a brand with cutting-edge watch designs and quality materials, staying always true to our affordable roots.
Risks and challenges
As with most products, manufacturing is often subject to delays and setbacks. We have minimised the plausible factor of delay which is the supply of Miyota movements by placing a reservation them first. A strong working relationship has been built with the manufacturer as we have spent months working with them. CAD drawings are all ready and confirmed via samples which would mean production can begin immediately.
Being situated a short flight away from the factories, we will visit the factory personally once production has begun. You should definitely keep a lookout for pictures from our trip!
