TheTimeBum- "an outrageously capable bronze dive watch"
Worn&Wound - "a true tool watch; the design is functional and attractive but not flashy"
OceanicTime - "It's the last watch of the year, folks and it's a real belter!"
ACWatchBlog - "the nice bronze look of the Helmsman (which I loved) combined with a more rigid design and water resistance of 3000m!"
WristReview - " The Abyss is a capable diver’s watch indeed."
After the successful launch of 2 timepieces, the Helmsman and Chroma, we decided to offer a watch crafted from our favorite material, marine grade bronze. It was designed based on cues from the Helmsman but built to withstand the extremes.
The Abyss was conceived to survive the most punishing of depths. Every part of the case was redesigned to resist the intense water pressures which would easily crush metals.
Bronze was the natural choice for the Abyss, having first been introduced with the Helmsman. Bronze has always been closely linked to the sea as it is one of the most corrosion resistant metals available. An oxide layer, called a patina, forms a protective skin over time to protect the metal. This patina individualizes each Abyss, creating completely unique pieces. What starts out as a shiny rose-gold, ages with the atmosphere into a rustic brown.
The patina is easily confused for rust, but the underlying metal is merely hidden below. Restoration to its original shine is possible with the use of commonly available cleaning agents.
By combining this rustic metal with the latest in engineering, the Abyss was created.
The beefy bronze case was designed to withstand the abuse but the fine details were not forgotten. Chamfered edges are finely polished to perfection and the rest of the case is brushed to provide a contrast.
The sapphire crystal mounted to protect the face of the Abyss may seem simple yet it is anything but, making it one of the most expensive parts of the watch. It measures 7mm thick, crucial in providing the resistance to the crushing water pressure. It is double domed in shape (domed on the outside and inside) to reduce distortion when viewed at an angle. Inner anti reflective coatings also prevent any unwanted reflections and improves legibility.
The ubiquitous diver’s bezel is present on the Abyss, finely machined with 120 teeth. A Helium Escape Valve is also installed to provide functionality for saturation divers.
As with the Helmsman, we have added an internal bezel which is rarely seen among deep diving watches. This provides additional timing functionality if required, without any risk of the bezel turning unintentionally.
Reaching the Depths
Maintaining a water resistance of up to 3000m requires a complex balance of thick metal casings and fine gaskets sealing every possible point of leakage. Each of the crowns have 5 gaskets to ensure a waterproof seal, while a double O-ring system seals the hefty 4mm thick stainless steel screwdown caseback.
Conventional water pressure testing equipment for watches are usually available for 300m or 500m. Testing to the insane pressures of 3000m involves expensive Swiss made equipment which did not make financial sense for a small company like Zelos to purchase. A pressure tester was then assembled out of commercially available parts for just 1/20th the price of an commercial Swiss made tester!
Hydraulic hand pump connected to the pressure vessel where the watch will be placed in.
The Movement : Miyota 9015
Powered by your movements. Never needs a change of battery.
The automatic Miyota 9015 by Citizen was our top choice of engine for the Abyss. Many reviews have compared it to the Swiss ETA movements in terms of timekeeping and performance without the hefty price tag. Having used it for our first model, we were very pleased with the timekeeping and feedback from our backers.
A total of 500 pieces of the Abyss will be produced and each piece will be individually numbered. Unfortunately, we will not be able to reserve any serial numbers as this might delay fulfillment of the rewards as experienced from our first project.
The entire package is yet to be finalised but the confirmed items are:
-Leather carry roll
-Brown vintage leather strap
-Black rubber dive strap
Please select the respective reward for your choice of color.
(Left to right) Blue, Green, Brown, Black, DLC bezel with Black dial
43mm Diameter Case in CUSN8 Bronze. 51.5mm lug to lug length makes it extremely wearable. 18mm thickness for the water resistance
Brushed case with polished edges and DLC sandblasted crowns
24 Jewel Automatic Movement Miyota(owned by Citizen) 9015: Japan made and holds comparable reliability with Swiss movements.
7mm thick Sapphire crystal: scratched only by diamond. Double domed in shape and inner coated with anti reflective coating.
Water Resistance of 3000m
External divers bezel: 120 click, unidirectional. Lumed triangle
DLC coating on crowns and black bezel model- Extreme hard coating on stainless steel to prevent scratches
Engraved logo as well on crown, buckle
Multi Level Dial with circular brushed inner dial
BGW9 Superluminova on hands and markers

My name is Elshan Tang and I'm the founder of Zelos. The Abyss is the third watch after the successful launch of the Helmsman and Chroma. Zelos is Greek for zeal which expresses my passion for wristwatches and the primary reason why Zelos was founded. From a young age, I have always had a fascination for kinetic mechanisms, and I have been drawn to watches ever since I discovered the detailed perfection of watch designs. After collecting watches for a decade, I realized the high prices were mainly due to brand inflation. Having completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering which provided the relevant skills, I decided to design my very own watch to prove that quality could be had at a fraction of the price. Zelos aims to be a brand with cutting-edge watch designs and quality materials, staying always true to our affordable roots.
Schedules and Timeline
Delivery is scheduled for May which is longer than usually projected. This is due to the one month closure of the factories in Feb. Also, the complexity of the Abyss lengthens the production process.
We have the final production samples from a reliable manufacturer. CAD files for the mold are ready as well and are awaiting the signal to begin work.
Being our third project, we have a better grasp of the timelines and understanding of manufacturer practices. Quality has been verified to be excellent from the prototypes as well as from the production of the previous designs.
The funds raised from Kickstarter will be used to pay for full production of the watch and accessories. This includes
-Tooling and mold costs
-Raw materials for cases, straps and packaging
Production is due to begin once the goal has been reached, hopefully much sooner than the project deadline! This will help to save some time in these busy months of manufacturing. Some time will be needed to do crucial testing such as waterproofing and timing tests.

Risks and challenges
As with our previous 2 projects, we have placed a reservation with the Miyota movements which are in high demand to minimise the likelihood of a delay. The projected delivery time for the Abyss is longer due to the Chinese New Year holidays where factories close for a month.
A huge problem for the Helmsman project was the use of bronze combined with a complicated case design which caused many delays for mass production. Having learnt from our previous experiences, we have planned and finalised the design for mass production to minimise any errors.
To also simplify order fulfillment, we have removed the ability to reserve specific serial numbers. This was a problem as some pieces might fail our QC and have to be remade, leaving the backer of that particular serial number waiting far longer than others. We have also placed a cap on the number of pieces that are able to be ordered to make sure production facilities are able to keep up.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
