I Want to Give You the Same System I’ve Used to Reach my Long-Term Goals.   

You see, I’ve been there. I’ve felt the lack of progress towards my goals. I’ve felt demotivated for long periods of time. I’ve felt stressed and anxious about work on evenings & weekends. I’ve tried out productivity systems, only to become frustrated with the lack of flexibility. I’ve sat there at the end of the week, unfulfilled with what I had achieved. 

I know the feeling. I’ve been there too.  

Then I began Journaling. I Journaled more. I began tailoring it to make the system more effective.

This meant leaving my draining office job to set up my own 20,000 attendee festival. What’s more? I used this journal system to ensure I stayed on track whilst planning the festival during my travels through Latin America.

I was planning a long-term goal of mine (setting up a festival), while experiencing a long-term goal of mine (travelling Latin America). For this I was using a system which has now become the Zelo Journal.

I'm in the best shape I've ever been, mentally & physically. I'm spending as much time with friends and family as I’d like. My life is now guided by freedom and choice and I’m always working towards my long-term goals. 

But it's not because of some complex system.

It's just a simple flexible journal, that I use every day.

I’ve kept a journal for around five years now, and it actually evolved from a simple to-do list (with a bit of goal setting on the side). 

After a while, it became clear that those periods of my life that I kept a daily Journal were much more productive and memorable than those periods I didn’t.  

Yep, like anyone else I have been through periods of time where I’ve fallen out of the habit of daily planning. It wasn’t until a friend asked me how I kept on top of everything that I had the idea to create a journal design to be published. 

Knowing what a profound impact daily planning has, I thought the idea deserved further attention.

I’ve worked with some incredible people in my time and one thing is always clear. High performers are almost always well organised and great planners. I thought back to times that I have experimented with various productivity and mindfulness planners. 

I thought of ways that I could improve the user experience and frustrations that I had. 

The first was that I have always found that goal/productivity systems in journals are too rigid. While the systems are fantastic in their own right, they are not suitable for all lifestyles. This can leave you feeling unfulfilled and deflated.

Productivity does not fit the one-size-fits-all model.  

I wanted to create a flexible system that empowers an individual based on their specific lifestyle. Often there is too much ‘fluff’ (features that people don’t use/not beneficial to their lifestyle).

....This then leads to waste.

I wanted to take all this out, place it in the user guide and give the user the option to use it if it suits their lifestyle. Lifestyle’s change and needs change. For example, my lifestyle now running a festival is very different to when I worked in insurance for one of the UK’s largest banks.

A Quality, Sleek, Understated Design.

My second frustration was that structured planners often had visual designs which weren't easy on the eye. Don’t get me wrong, I love a quote – but I like them in the right places. I wanted clean daily planning pages that are fit to get out in front of a client.

So this left me returning to the blank notebooks implementing my own systems. I’ve been through enough low-quality notebooks to know quality is not something I wanted to compromise on.

Risks and challenges

As with any project, this one carried its own risks and challenges. However, these are very minimal. With the design and approval process behind us, the risks lie purely in Manufacturing and Shipping.

Naturally setbacks can occur in manufacturing and shipping. However, I am confident that I will meet the timelines I have noted due to the extra buffer that I have added. All I ask for is a little patience if something does cause a set back – I’ll be sure to keep you updated.
