Aloha Kākou! Hello Everyone!
My name is Zelie Kūliaikanu’u Duvauchelle. I was born and raised here in Hawaii and grew up hearing the music of my ancestors. This music is steeped in metaphor, kaona - layered or hidden meaning.
In the past I have self-produced 2 albums, and I am very excited to announce that the funds raised here will provide the opportunity for me to work with accomplished musicians and skilled professionals to make my long awaited full-length album.
"When Zelie sings a divine wind blows into one's heart..." ~ Margaret Williams, MD
HŪ! ~ to rise, pour forth, effervesce. HŪ! is the name of this album of original and traditional songs that speak of our relationship to nature, to the cosmos, and to each other.
Why this record is important
"The vocal nourishment that the mother provides to her child is just as important to the child's development as her milk." -Alfred Tomatis, M.D.
The voice that is still alive in Hawaiian music is one of other times. This is a familiar voice from the roots of my being and the Mother of us all, reminding us that we are directly connected to nature and the rhythm of life.
This CD has been waiting to be completed for years now, and this is the time! Please ensure that HŪ! will be in your hands and heart, and that it will be widely heard. It is important for all.
“Zelie’s pure transformative voice offered me the place of stillness to discover my own. Her magic is heartful presence, whether in simple silence, spoken word, musical melody, or boundless creativity. She will assuredly assist you in your own journey into the Mystery.” -Rakesh S., MD
My vision for this record
My musical gifts and healing capacity come together in this record to harmonize our relationship with nature in a way that is pertinent to our time. The music will bring about healing and stimulate creativity, wisdom, and kindness for us all. With everything on track the record is released in the winter of 2015.
Kickstarter campaigns are "all or nothing", which means if I do not reach my goal of $20,000, the project doesn't get funded and the album does not get made!
The $20,000 goal is the minimum we need to complete this project, the recording of my new album HŪ!
The main expenses
- Recording studio and production costs
- Studio musicians
Graphics and art design
- Travel and lodging
If we are able to raise more than our $20,000 minimum, we can increase the artistic richness of the album and there are possibilities for higher quality everything: studio musicians, graphics, promotion, even choice of recording studio. And, we can make music videos, and take the album further on the road!

About Zelie Kuliaikanu'u Duvauchelle
Zelie Kuliaikanu'u Duvauchelle discovered the gift of her unique, resonant, powerful voice when married to a musician who insisted she learn a song to sing at family gatherings. Though she was terrified by the prospect, we are blessed that she pushed through her fear and started to sing! This began more than 30 years of singing, songwriting, playing ukulele, guitar, didgeridoo and ipu.
In her twenties, Zelie received a grant from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to apprentice with Master Hawaiian Falsetto Singer, Clyde (Kindy) Sproat, named an NEA National Heritage Fellow. This experience continues to influence and inform her life and her music.
Since then, she has performed for audiences in Hawaii and the mainland, from house concerts, to backyard kanikapila (jam sessions), to an audience of 9,000 fans.
Her songwriting comes from a deep connection with the ancestors and helps create a bridge with the other worlds. When one of her first songs written in Hawaiian "came through", she did not know some of the words and their full meaning, and needed to have a fluent Hawaiian speaker confirm that it was, in fact, correct. This song, Ka'apuni O Moloka'i, tells the story of her incredible experience of paddling a canoe around her home island of Molokai, and is on this CD!
The brilliance of her writing, the deep layered meanings (kaona), and the stories they tell are enhanced by the beauty and vibration of her extraordinary voice.
Zelie is also a healer, teacher and facilitator of transformational consciousness work. She weaves together her insights, unique experience, vision and music to create profound shifts and healing.

Stretch Goal ~ $5,000 to Cover Our Expenses, Help This Album Be the Best It Can Be and Reach More People!!
Please help us reach our stretch goal of an additional $5,000! This amount will help to cover our expenses - 7% to Kickstarter/Amazon, video filming, etc, AND will help make this album even better! I can hire more musicians, more studio time (more tracks), hire a graphic artist, travel to play more house concerts to share the music....
We still have many rewards available and only THREE DAYS to go now!
Thank you for your support and please spread the word.
Update # 1
First, we want to thank all of you who have contributed generously so far! Many of you have given financial backing, and even more have shared our project to Facebook (almost 500 shares here!), your email lists, friends and families, and we are SO grateful. Please continue spreading the word!
We could not do this project and record this album without your support. As of today, we have had 56 people back the project, bringing us just over $4,500, 22% of our goal of $20,000. We are just one week in, and feel optimistic that we will reach our goal, with your continued support! Please share the link to our Kickstarter page if you haven't already. And join (like) Zelie's Music Facebook page as well, so you'll see the daily photos, videos and updates there during this month as well.
"In this new video, I tell the story of my song Ka Lei U'i Lani, an original composition, in which I express my great love for the Hawaiian Islands and their flowers. This song unifies the 6 major islands in my heart. This was recorded at a retreat center on Molokai where I sing, talk story and teach as a guest presenter at workshops held there." Filmed by the talented Matt Yamashita of Quazifilms on Molokai, HI, we highly recommend his work!
We have been delighted that several of our reward packages have so quickly run out, so we've added many more of the $100 and $200 packages, with 45 minute Skype sessions with me, for ukulele/music lessons, or a healing session. If you wanted one of these and it showed "all gone", come back and select it now. Send me an email if you wanted this reward and had to choose another selection, and we'll work it out!
Also, if you're interested in one of my Ukulele/Hawaiian Music Retreats at my home on Molokai, please note that you can attend this retreat for giving at the $1,500 level. This is actually a discounted rate for the Retreat - so you can contribute generously to this project AND attend my 5 day Music Retreat on Molokai - and everyone benefits!
We also have a retreat for 5 people at the $10,000 level of contribution. This custom retreat will be tailored to your group's needs. At this level of contribution we will roll out the "red dirt carpet" for you and your friends/family. Beachfront accommodations, group excursions to pristine locations, ukulele lessons and/or healing sessions with both of us, and more, are included in this generous reward. This is a great opportunity for 5 friends who want to contribute together for a guided vacation retreat.
with much aloha and gratitude,
Zelie Duvauchelle - singer/songwriter
and Lucia Maya - project manager
Update #2 - Halfway to Our Goal!
Our big news is that we've reached the milestone of $10,000 in contributions, now over halfway to our goal of $20,000, thanks to every one of you!! Thank you! Mahalo!
That's the good news. The other news is that we still have over $9,000 to raise in just two and a half weeks! This is all or nothing. If we don't reach $20,000 in contributions, none of the donations are collected, I don't receive any funding, my new album HŪ! doesn't get made next year, and we're all very sad. SO, please continue to support this project by spreading the word!!
We are asking each of you to share this Kickstarter page with a few friends (or your whole email list!) who you think will enjoy my music and resonate with this project to support my new album. You can share it on Facebook, Twitter, through emails, word of mouth... whatever way works best for you. Please direct them to my Kickstarter page, and/or my Facebook music page, where they'll get daily updates, with photos, stories and music videos. Let me know if you have questions about how to share it.
This new video is my version of Na Ke Aloha I Hanai Mai. This song speaks of being supported by friends and strangers, how important love is, and that it is love that carries us through. This is truly a community effort, connecting each of us through music and love.
Thank you for your continued support of this project, and please help us reach our goal by sharing, so this project is funded and I can record this album. Mahalo!
Here's what a friend shared after watching my song Ka Lei U'i Lani: "Beautiful Zelie! I love the melody and I love the mana'o behind your song. I've been feeling this in my own work that we have to work towards unifying the islands. Together we are stronger... Your song is so timely and I can see you singing this song as you visit each island and let your music and your leo be heard by the 'Aina to heal the land of any kaumaha and dense energies. I hope you do that. It will be beautiful. I'll memorize the song too and spread your mele as a gift to each island I walk on." - Malia Akutagawa

Update #3 - Days of Thanks - So Much Gratitude...
we are amazed and incredibly grateful that in this past week alone we have received over $7,000 in contributions, bringing our total to $17,669 with 198 backers!
Here is what one of our many generous contributors said: "I am so excited for you Zelie! ...and, for me, your gift of music and your ability to transmit your energy on its wings is one of the wonders of this world in which I delight. I cannot wait to get to experience your new work. You will make your goal!" We have over $2,000 left to reach our goal, with just 12 days to go. We feel confident we will succeed, with the momentum we've had this past week, and with your continued love and support.
We are happy to share a 3rd video here, recorded recently when Zelie was doing a Hawaiian music presentation, talk-story and teaching at a retreat center on Molokai:
I am humbled and even more inspired, knowing that I am so supported by this community. I am excited to be doing two House Concerts next week on Molokai, and looking forward to visiting some potential recording studios in the coming weeks. I am grateful that we have come this far, and am honing my song selection for this album, HŪ!
From Lucia - Zelie's birthday this Friday:
This Friday, November 28, is Zelie's 55th birthday! A wonderful way to share your birthday wishes is to go to Zelie's Music page on Facebook and wish her a happy birthday. Please "like" her page if you haven't, and share our latest posts with your FB friends! If you know people who may be interested in her music, her vision, her project, please continue to help us with spreading the word. It would be an incredible 55th birthday gift if this campaign is fully funded on her birthday!
We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, spending the day with loved ones, with much to be grateful for, as we will. We are grateful for every one of you. Thank you so much for your continued support!
with much aloha,
Zelie - singer/songwriter
Lucia - project manager
Update #4 We reached our goal!! Thank you all so much!!
We are delighted to share the news that we reached our goal of $20,000, in record time (it was our first Kickstarter project, but it was much quicker than we expected!), thanks to every one of you!!
As of today, there are 249 of you who have collectively contributed $20,770, and shared this page to Facebook over 900 times! We are overwhelmed and so grateful for the support you have shown this project - this new album Hū!, Zelie's unique voice and beautiful lyrics, Hawaiian music, the aina (land) of Hawaii and independent artists... Mahalo! Thank you!
As our thank you, we are sharing the last of the videos created especially for this project. "Ka'apuni 'O Moloka'i" is an original composition of Zelie's, and this video includes a talk story session where she shares the story behind the song, her 5-day journey paddling around her home island of Molokai, which inspired this favorite.
We still have 4 days left of the KS campaign, and the project will actually cost more than $20,000 (just the costs to use this site are 7%...), so we are hoping to receive another $4,000. If you would continue to spread the word, we'd be most grateful.
Thank you again.
with love and aloha,
Zelie ~ singer/songwriter
Lucia ~ project manager
Risks and challenges
The risk is of course not getting enough backers to get the project funded. If the project does not get funded, the album will not be made - and we'll all be sad.
Following my instincts and intuition is one of my greatest gifts. I have an innate ability for right timing, listening and waiting for the right moment and attracting the right people.
All the right people are showing up, I've laid all the ground work, and my intention is to keep on the path, and the project will come to fruition.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
