Zappy Sonicated Coffee Maker
We have added ultrasonics to the humble yet popular French Press / Coffee Plunger to massively increase the caffeine and flavour they extract from every brew.
Enjoy more flavour and more caffeine from your filtered coffee without having to add sugar to overcome the bitterness of espresso coffee.
So please read on, try it for yourselves, and if you like the brew, chip in to our Kickstarter fundraising campaign to help us manufacture our first batch of 400 sonicating Zappy Coffee Makers.
It dawned on us one day that there might be another way to make great coffee.
Lou and I have been best friends since we were nine. He's an expert coffee roaster and science guru, and I'm an electronics engineer and entrepreneur.
For year’s we’d drink coffee while telling each other it would be good to invent something. I often said that our invention was probably under our noses. Then one day I asked Lou to tell me the science behind brewing the coffee we’d been drinking all these years.
He explained that “you either can force caffeine and coffee flavours out from coffee grounds using pressure, or you can let it dissolve slowly into cold water, or quickly into hot water”. I thought it would be better to suck out the caffeine and flavours, the way an ultrasonic cleaner removes away dirt off hard objects.
"You see," he continued, "ultrasonic cleaners generate an effect called cavitation to suck away dirt and grime molecules.
An easy way to understand cavitation is to picture a plumber’s plunger unclogging a blocked sink drain. The plunger’s suction cup is placed over the drain, and its handle is pushed and pulled up and down repeatedly.
The alternating pressure and vacuum generated inside the pipe eventually frees away any stuck material.
Similarly, ultrasonically agitated water pushes and pulls against coffee grounds, creating a strong microscopic vacuum which sucks out the caffeine and flavour molecules.
We tried our idea by adding coffee and hot water to a coffee plunger which we then placed in an ultrasonic cleaner part filled with water.
We were surprised to see the coffee grounds darting in all directions as a result of cavitation.
I encourage you to try the same experiment at home using your favourite coarse coffee grounds. Be sure to apply no more than 20 seconds of ultrasound, or the flavour will begin to fade. 20 seconds is long enough to extract most of the caffeine.
Encouraged by the resulting smooth coffee brew, we researched ultrasonics and coffee online. We found that ultrasonic industrial processes are used by the pharmaceutical industry to extract caffeine for use in medicines to prevent drowsiness, and by the food industry for use in soft drinks.
Industrial processes however, are not good for brewing a flavoursome cup of coffee because they extract caffeine using high power sonication applied via probes inserted directly into the liquid from above.
We were even more encouraged when we couldn't find any commercially available domestic appliances for ultrasonically brewing coffee. Nor did we find any relevant patents. So with help from our highly rated patent attorneys, we lodged our global patent and trademark.
We have designed a range of Zappy Coffee Makers, and are finalising the design for manufacture of our first model with built in ultrasonic electricals. We now need your support to share our news with others, and to contribute via our Kickstarter campaign.
So there you have it. And innovative way to make sonicated coffee by adding ultrasonics to the popular yet humble coffee plunger.
Best of all, there’s a nice new coffee we can all enjoy!

Risks and challenges
Delays in design, procurement and production. These risks are mitigated by our small initial manufacturing target of 400 units, and by relying on existing off the shelf components and methods.
We are working closely with one of Australia's largest manufacturer of scientific and innovative electrical technologies. The company also owns asian based manufacturing operations from where it enjoys global procurement and logistic services.
Our team each has 3 decades of experience working in R&D, and high tech commercialisation projects, and has championed the design, manufacturing, sales and/or servicing of other innovative products.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
