13: The Astonishing Lives of the Neuromantics is the brainchild of artist Yves Navant, evoking Heavy Metal in its sexuality, innovation, and flat-out strangeness… a space opera adventure through a queer lens.
Equal parts heart and psychedelia, the book presents a future beset by poverty and subjugation. The privileged, living in orbital penthouses above the masses, not only control but actually commodify the underclasses.
They buy and sell parts of the underprivileged to feed their own vanity as if they were cars in a junkyard. Reproduction is sterile and transactional: to touch is taboo, to love is unheard of, and sexual deviation means quarantine.
But this world also contains the seeds of rebellion that may change everything.
Stripped of his arms—and along with them, his talent—our hero must fight to become whole again, and even dares to fall in love in this most operatically hopeless world.
13 is a hero’s journey as an underdog struggles to find himself, exploring the meaning of humanity on the way. In a world where sex itself has become a rebellious act—a delivery system for faith and spirituality, accessing the divine through lust—13 is a story of rebellion by accident, and revolution by necessity.
Yves Navant is the youngest of 13, coming of age against all odds in the nighttime world of punk rock, and hedonism. This book was imagined to serve as a confessional and semi-autobiographical future fantasy.
Written and drawn during a tumultuous time in Yves' life, 13: The Astonishing Lives of the Neuromantics could have been his final swan song; his last shout of rebellion and defiance.
First and foremost, we want to get this book into your hands, so the primary rewards are the digital and print editions of 13. You can also get a signed art print (there will be several to choose from), or even a custom-created original art piece by Yves Navant.
We are seeking to raise $12,000 to complete this project, which includes:
- $2,000 minimum royalty advance for Yves
- $8,000 to print and ship 13: The Astonishing Lives of the Neuromantics from our printer, Marquis Imprimeur in Quebec
- $800 for postage
- $750 for credit card and processing fees
- $450 for corrections, replacements, promotion, incidentals and any other unforeseen costs.
As we've done with previous Northwest Press projects, if we exceed our goal by a significant amount, we'll automatically upgrade all print backers' books to a limited edition hardcover!
This project rounds out a baker's dozen of great LGBT graphic novels and comics from Northwest Press; we think it's fitting that this particular book is the subject of our 13th Kickstarter.
We produce these books because we're just as hungry for thought-provoking queer comics as you are. Thank you for supporting stories like this that you're unlikely to find at most local comic shops.
Risks and challenges
This is Northwest Press' 13th Kickstarter project, and by now we've got a good grasp of how to create and fulfill graphic novels and comics. Our biggest challenge in the past has been postage and fulfillment, but since we've budgeted better for shipping in the last two projects, we've been able to get books out the door much faster.
In the event of any roadblocks, we will be sure to keep you informed and make sure that you don't have to wait long to feast your eyes on the book.
