NEWS FLASH! Tues Oct 2: 'Paca Backers: you did it! We made our goal! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
For those who still want to back "Zadie" our Kickstarter site will be open until 4:40 am MST on Sunday, October 7. Depending on how far we go over, we will either order more Zadie books or start editing and illustrating the next book!
Kids love stories about animals…pig books, bear books, duck books…. Wait a bit! Where are the alpaca books? There are very, very few of them out there. This must change! Not only are ‘pacas gentle, intelligent, and incredibly cute, they produce an amazing annual crop….their spectacular fleece. Children need to know about alpacas!
Alpaca breeder Barb Ziek and artist Denise Duker have written and illustrated a children's picture book (ages 4 or 5 to 10) about alpacas and fiber arts. Young Zadie's grandfather promises her that the next cria born on his farm will be hers! Zadie loves all the alpaca colors and wonders what color her alpaca will be: lavendery rose gray, shimmering black, peanut buttery or chocolaty brown? The cria is a disappointing plain vanilla white. She is a mischievous cria and because of a fruit punch powdered drink mix fiasco, is transformed into a rainbow alpaca! The story is followed by a fiber arts project: powdered drink mix dyeing, wet felting beads with the dyed fiber and stringing the beads into a necklace. The book also contains anecdotes based on our observations of alpaca behavior in our herd and alpaca facts. There will be a resource page for alpaca farms who sell fiber and for fiber artists and yarn shops that offer fiber arts classes for kids.
Barb says, "I’m an alpaca breeder, fiber artist, retired teacher and book lover. Over the years I wondered when someone was going to write about alpacas and fiber for kids. Nobody did. Then it dawned on me: I can be that person! I set about writing a children's picture book with an entertaining story followed by instructions for a fiber arts project. My artist friend, Denise Duker, joined me in this project and illustrated the book with her fabulous watercolors."
We want to get kids away from the TV and internet and into enjoying reading and involved in a creative hobby. The fiber arts include age old crafts which are gaining popularity in recent years. Being a fiber artist can be calming or energizing, relaxing or demanding, but its always interesting to see the final product! We want to encourage kids to experience the fun of fiber arts, in this case dyeing and wet felting.
We invite people to participate in the launching of Zadie and Plain Vanilla, the Rainbow Alpaca by preordering the book kit (book, alpaca fiber, child safe powdered drink mix dye) by pledging $25 or making a pledge for one of our other Rewards. We have set a goal of raising $6000 to cover our expenses by October 7.
The story of Zadie and Plain Vanilla, the especially naughty cria (baby alpaca), leads logically to the fiber dyeing and felting project that follows the story. The safe-for-kids dye that is used is fruit flavored powdered drink mix.
The book also includes alpaca facts and anecdotes based on observations of our herd, including the story of Trouble, the bad little cria who inspired the book character, Plain Vanilla. From the day he was born, Trouble wreaked havoc in the herd. He crashed into his mother, he raced down the line of alpacas eating grain, nipping the hocks of as many as he could as he passed. Then he'd pronk (bounce) through the dishes, spraying grain everywhere. Alpacas squealed; spit flew. It took the normally calm herd the entire summer to civilize Trouble.
The last page of the book will be a Resource Page listing alpaca farms that sell fiber and yarn shops and fiber artists who offer children’s fiber arts classes. When a child has used all the fiber that came in Zadie's Book Kit (the book, a package of roving and 2 packets of fruit flavored powdered fruit drink mix dye) and needs more or wants to take a class, where will he/she go? To the alpaca farms and fiber arts instructors who pledged to be on the book's Resource Page.
The book has been written. Artist and art teacher, Denise Duker has finished the water illustrations. We are doing last minute tweaking.
The book has been copyrighted, the ISBN number procured. The retail price for the 40 page hardbound (no dust cover) book has been set at $17.99 retail plus $7 for the fiber/dye package. The printer will print the books IN THE UNITED STATES! Projected book delivery is December, 2012.
We need to raise $6,000 during the month of September. That's not much time! We need you to participate in our project by making a pledge for a Reward you'd like! Pre-order Zadie's Book Kit (book, roving, dye) or stand alone copies by making a pledge. That's the fastest way to get the book.
Where will the funds we raise through our Kickstarter project go? Because we want to retain rights and control of our work, we are going to self-publish. There will be editing, layout, printing and shipping costs as well as Kickstarter and Amazon fees. We will also need to cover expenses for Rewards like posters and T-shirts.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS AN ALL OR NOTHING CAMPAIGN. IF WE MEET OUR GOAL, ALL FUNDS WILL BE COLLECTED AND ALL REWARDS WILL BE FULFILLED. IF WE DON’T MAKE THE GOAL, YOUR CARD WILL NOT BE CHARGED AND THERE WILL BE NO REWARDS. If we are fortunate enough to surpass our goal, the extra funds will go toward printing more books and/or the next book in the series of alpaca/fiber arts books for kids.
There are several distinct audiences for this book. We have geared different Rewards toward each group. Most rewards include the book: you are actually preordering it by pledging. Books come as stand-alone autographed books, primarily for alpaca farms who want to purchase mulitiple copies to resell with their own fiber or as Zadie Book Kits which include an autographed copy of the book, a package of alpaca fiber, and two powdered drink packets (for dye) for people who'd like to buy the book as a gift for a special child or to donate to a school or library. Pledge opportunities range from $1 to $800.
EVERYONE: Pledge $1 if you like the idea of an alpaca kids’ book, a book that introduces kids to alpacas and the fiber arts, a book that gets children away from the TV and actively involved in a hobby. Can we get a thousand people to pledge $1 each? I will read the new $1 pledge names to the alpacas every day! They will be impressed. You will receive one photo (jpeg) by email of the alpacas reading the $1 Pledge List that is nailed to the barn wall. All $1 backer’s names will be listed on the book’s website after the successful campaign is over.
Group 1 Backer: You are a parent or grandparent who’d like Zadie's Book Kit for the child in your life or to donate to a school or library. Maybe you want to add a book poster or T-shirt to your pledge. Would your child like to visit our Colorado Springs area farm to see shearing, do a little carding and dyeing and take a felting lesson with the author? Perhaps your Colorado Springs area budding artist would love a watercolor lesson with the illustrator.
Group 2 Backer: You are a homeschooler or teacher. We have a Reward for you and your ages 4-7 student or classroom! Your pledge will earn you a Zadie Book Kit, and a primary level Alpaca Activities Packet created by Barb and Denise, both of whom are teachers.
Group 3 Backer: You are a fiber arts person who’d like to try using alpaca. We have a fiber package for you...the book kit, more roving, yarn.
Group 4 Backer: Alpaca farms, yarn stores and fiber studios who would like to carry the book and sell their own alpaca fiber with it can become active participants. You can make a pledge that will earn you multiple copies of the book and a listing on the book's Resource Page and/or the book’s website as a Fiber or Fiber Arts Class Resource.
Shipping is included for books, posters and T-shirts sent to addresses in the USA. Add US $15 for international shipping.
THANK YOU for reading about our project. If you find something you'd like, please make a pledge. If you like the idea of an entertaining book with a fun (and somewhat messy) project that will introduce a life long hobby to a child you know, please pass our kickstart site along to your friends and put it on your Facebook page or pinterest.com.
We encourage you to
