Update #69

KickSat Is Alive!

Hi Everyone,

After a beautiful launch at 3:25 this afternoon, KickSat was deployed in low Earth orbit. We at Cornell and several amateur radio operators around the world have made contact with the spacecraft and it is alive and well. I can't thank all of you enough for your tremendous support over the past two years. Thank you for believing in KickSat!

This is the culmination of a lot of hard work and is a huge milestone, but we're not done yet. In 16 days the Sprites will deploy from KickSat. We need as many people as possible listening in, so if you're interested, please check out the wiki and our mailing list for more information. As always, don't hesitate to contact me with questions.

Launch Updates

Hi Everyone,

The next launch attempt for KickSat aboard CRS-3 is scheduled for 3:25 PM EDT tomorrow (Friday). Unfortunately, tomorrow's weather forecast doesn't look great and there is a good chance the launch will be scrubbed again. The good news is that there is another launch slot on Saturday at 3:02 PM EDT. The weather forecast for Saturday is much better - I'm told there is a 60% chance of favorable weather.

In both cases, live coverage will begin on NASA TV about an hour before the scheduled launch time. You can watch on cable in the U.S. or online anywhere in the world.

Thanks again to all of you for your support. We're almost there!

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately our launch was delayed again yesterday due to a technical glitch with the rocket. The next scheduled launch attempt will be on Friday (4/18). I'll continue posting updated information as I learn more. In the mean time, here's a picture of our ride:

Hi Everyone,

Our launch is officially on for tomorrow (April 14th) at 4:59 PM EDT. Provided everything goes as planned, here's how the series of events should look:

  • Liftoff (4:59 PM EDT)
  • KickSat is deployed from the launch vehicle (6:02 PM EDT)
  • KickSat radio beacon turns on (6:52 PM EDT)
  • Sprites deploy (April 30th 6:02 PM EDT)

I'm on my way down to Kennedy Space Center now to see the launch. You can watch live coverage on NASA TV, or online. If you plan on tuning in, I should be on for an interview about an hour before launch.

Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow!

Radio Contest!

Hi Everyone,

Our launch coming up in less than a week and, to keep things fun, I'd like to announce a little contest...

I'll be offering prizes to the first several people who receive telemetry packets from KickSat as well as the first few who receive signals from the Sprites. The prizes will include souvenir Sprites and CRS-3 and ELaNa-V mission patches.

Now for the rules:

  • In the case of KickSat telemetry, you have to send me the raw hex or ascii packet data and I have to be able to successfully decode it.
  • In the case of the Sprite signals, you have to send me a raw baseband recording and I have to be able to decode at least one Sprite signal from it.
  • I'll continue offering prizes until I run out of cool swag.
  • I have the ultimate say on whether or not you win.

To get in on the fun, check out our wiki and join the KickSat mailing list. Let the games begin!
