An award-nominated documentary web series giving you unique access to experience the world inside visual artists' studios.

WHAT IS BEYOND THE GALLERY?

Beyond the Gallery is a feature-length web TV series that gives you unique access to the world inside visual artists' studios. Each episode, we follow one artist and immerse ourselves in what makes them tick. Technique, inspiration and motivation – they're all found in Beyond the Gallery.

In 2010, we launched Season One, which premiered online on our site infusion5.com and youtube.com/beyondthegallery.

Just over a year later, the series received an award nomination for "Best Documentary Web Series" by the International Academy of Web Television.

If you haven't seen it yet, go here to watch Season One!

Here's one episode in particular that received the award-nod:

Season One was a success and now we're in the middle of pre-production for Season Two. I want to expand the vision and format in every way – more artists, more episodes, more cities, more promotion, a "making of" production diary and behind-the-scenes videos.

I'm incredibly excited to bring Season Two to Kickstarter, and delighted about the pledge rewards that we have to offer you!

WHO'S BEHIND BTG?

Beyond the Gallery was created by Zach Wolfson. He also produces and directs the series.

Zach Wolfson leads ZWFILM, a video production and strategy company based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His work has been featured by History Colorado and Western Art & Architecture Magazine. He's served a variety of clients, including M&C SAATCHI, Woodford Manufacturing Company, Mitsubishi, Colorado Springs Health Partners, and Mercedes-Benz Club of America.

Additionally, many of the key creative/production personnel from Season One will return for Season Two.

SEASON TWO

Season Two will take place over sixteen, 5:00-7:00 minute episodes, for a total of 80-112 minutes of artful, creative goodness about 16 stellar artists.

Filming is slated to begin in early September, and we'll release episodes on a weekly schedule starting in October.

We currently have 10 artists booked for Season Two. They include painters, sculptors, designers, photographers, illustrators and mixed-media artists.

Current cities for Season Two (will update as we add more artists)
Current cities for Season Two (will update as we add more artists)

We'll be traveling to many cities to capture each of their stories, including: Brooklyn and Wassaic, NY; Atlanta, GA; Taos and Santa Fe, NM; Los Angeles, CA.

In the coming weeks, we'll continue to update our Kickstarter as we hand-select the final 6 artists for this season.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Please remember – Kickstarter campaigns are ALL OR NOTHING. We don't receive a dollar unless we meet our complete goal during our funding timeline.

1. JOIN AND CONTRIBUTE: Join the BTG community – pick your pledge level and reward on the right. You are truly an integral part of making Season Two a reality. Thank you!

2. SHARE AND ENGAGE: Any help spreading the word would be AWESOME. Share Season Two with a handful of friends, family and colleagues who especially love art and creativity. Face-to-face, email, Facebook, Twitter – no matter how you share it, sharing it is what matters. Thank you.

THE ARTISTS OF SEASON TWO (SO FAR)

MAXIMILIAN BODE

Maximilian Bode is a born and bred New Yorker; he was raised in the tough streets of SoHo, where he lived until he moved to Brooklyn to attend Pratt Institute — he graduated with a BA in communication design. A year before graduating, his work was being published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and a slew of other publications. Out of school he supported himself as a freelance artist.

CHRISTOPHER DEREK BRUNO

Christopher Derek Bruno
Christopher Derek Bruno

Christopher Derek Bruno is a maker above all other things. After his education in industrial design, Derek moved about the United States cultivating his approach to the design/fabrication of furniture, and sculpture-based imagery. Currently residing in his hometown of Atlanta, his recent work intends to explore the cognitive visual experience using (but not limited to) a set of 0-dimensional points bound by 1-dimensional lines, combined to make 2D planes, organized into 3D forms, applied to objects with the express purpose of creating a 4-dimensional relationship with someone else.

RYAN FRANK

Ryan Frank
Ryan Frank

Ryan Frank’s work combines industrial materials with photography to create sculptures that make us conscious of the act of seeing – an action we often take for granted when viewing a piece of art. Ryan Frank is an artist and curator based in Brooklyn, NY and Sharon, CT.

RANDALL LAGRO

Randall LaGro
Randall LaGro

Like the vast New Mexican landscape surrounding Randall LaGro’s historic Joseph Sharp Studio in Taos, NM the wondrous yet hauntingly familiar imagery found in his oil paintings and monotypes comes filtered through the landscape of the artist’s subconscious. At an early age, LaGro instinctively knew his artistic destiny and spent several years developing a spiritual core, traveling and seeking knowledge. With a creative vision intact, LaGro began his formal training. After graduating from the Academy of Art in San Francisco, LaGro spent a few years as a commercial printmaker, before turning attentions to his own work.

ELLIOTT MCDOWELL

Elliott McDowell
Elliott McDowell

Elliott McDowell has long been one of Santa Fe, New Mexico's most entertaining photographers known for his finely crafted images that abound with wonders, insights and riddles. In the 1970's McDowell was an expert at traditional photography techniques, acclaimed for his impeccably printed photographs of quirky and playful subjects. Over the years McDowell's silver prints evolved into a stunning new body of jewel colored digital photographs that resemble miniature stage sets of dreams and fairy tales. McDowell constructs these magical works from his vast collection of color slides and digital imagery.

MAC PREMO

Mac Premo
Mac Premo

Mac Premo, American artist and stuffmaker, graduate of RISD '95. Exhibited art in NYC, LA, Miami, DC and Belfast, Northern Ireland. Mac has won 7 New York Emmy® Awards, including awards for best commercial, best photography, best set design and best PSA. A 2008 NYFA fellow in video, he currently makes art, illustration, commercials and dinner, most nights.

DEBORAH SAMUEL

Deborah Samuel
Deborah Samuel

Deborah Samuel is a Canadian photographer currently living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her photographs reside in many public, corporate and private collections and her work has been widely exhibited internationally. After working extensively as a commercial artist and winning numerous awards, she now focuses exclusively on fine art projects.

ERIK MARK SANDBERG

Erik Mark Sandberg
Erik Mark Sandberg

In 2002, Erik Mark Sandberg received a BFA with distinction, from Art Center of Design in Pasadena, CA, and studied with former Gemini Gel Master Printer Anthony Alan Zepeda from 2003-07. From 2006 to present, he has taught at Art Center College of Design, OTIS College of Art and Design, and California State University Northridge. He currently resides and works out of Los Angeles, CA.

ROBIN COLE SMITH

Robin Cole Smith
Robin Cole Smith

After completing BA in English at Colorado College, Robin Cole Smith, of Denver, CO, made the choice to devote herself fully to fine art.  She moved to Ireland to pursue a post-baccalaureate certificate in studio art at the Burren College of Art, and later received her Masters of Fine Art from the Laguna College of Art and Design in California. Robin has been an artist in residence at the Burren College of Art, the Watershed Research Station (a division of the Science Museum of Minnesota), the Eastern Frontier Educational Foundation in Maine, Hypatia-in-the-Woods, and Spiro Arts in Park City, Utah.  She has also spent time as an instructor at the Laguna College of Art and Design, guest lecturer with Colorado College, and assistant teacher at the Ah Haa School for the Arts. Her work is a part of local and national collections.

IAN TRASK

Ian Trask
Ian Trask

Ian Trask is a scientist-turned-artist. His sculptures transform materials of waste and commercial byproducts into refined aesthetic objects through an alchemistic procedure of reinterpreting a material’s value and usefulness. In many of Trask’s sculptures, the viewer will find a mischievous invitation. Texture and tangibility are essential to the experience of these objects, and by provoking the impulse to explore, each piece arouses in the beholder the same spirit of curiosity, experimentation and play that occasioned its creation.

PRODUCTION & SCHEDULE

Along with any motion picture project, our production schedule involves three stages:

Pre-Production (development, research, scheduling, logistics)Production (principal filming)Post-Production (editing, distribution)

We're 6+ months into pre-production as of launching our Kickstarter for Season Two.  One of the largest phases in pre-production has been developing relationships with artists and finding those who are a great fit for the show.

The biggest priority for Season Two is to feature as diverse a group of artists, in every sense of the word – and more women, especially.  The next priority after that is to release the episodes for your enjoyment quickly, and that means a concurrent production/release schedule.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I passionately believe that the future of digitally-distributed content is created today by web TV producers. A web TV show is more than simply a "calling card" for bigger projects (feature films or TV) – a great web series is a format in its own right, and I embrace it.

The artist – the human element within every piece of artwork – fascinates me, and I feel that artists' stories are some of the most thrilling in the world.

With your support this season, we'll continue to make a stellar series that explores and inspires creativity beyond the gallery walls.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

We face the same expected risks of every film/TV production, and we're mitigating that risk in the industry-standard way – contingency plans, production insurance, and a production team with ample experience in the commercial and documentary content spaces.

Relative to backer fulfillment – this is our first Kickstarter campaign, but I've done the due diligence, set up a system to manage fulfillment and already sourced partners to create the reward products. We're also planning on using BackerKit, a Kickstarter backer management tool, to ensure that we stay up to date on address changes and backer preferences.

Ultimately, we've already produced a season of the show once before. I'm confident that should any roadblocks in production arise, we will be more than qualified to take care of them.
