June Report

Posted by Ys Net (Creator)

Greetings Everyone.

First things first,

We would like to express our gratitude for the many comments we received on our previous report. From constructive criticism to kind words of encouragement, we were touched by every single one of your comments. Yu Suzuki and the entire Shenmue III Team are more determined than ever to bring to the Shenmue III that will live up to your expectations.

gamescom 2017 plans!

We will be attending Germany's mid-August gaming event gamescom 2017! While we are still working out the details with our partners, we plan to show our newest movie clips, share the latest updates and even make some new announcements.

Title logo change

Yes, Shenmue III has updated its title logo. Taking your comments into consideration, Yu Suzuki and the team gave the title logo another hard look and decided to update the logo with this design.

Characters in development

We have been hard at work developing the inhabitants who will set the stage of adventure in Shenmue III. Here's a sneak peek of what to expect!

The new logo looks great and finally matches the original one. Good job!

Don't mind at all about the delay. Take the time you need to get it right. We've waited 14 years. Another year or two won't matter. Really hyped for S3.

as an American going on my first ever international flight to see gamescom this year this is awesome! ! one question though will u be there the whole time or a specific day? anyways can't wait to finally finish the journey

I'm still breathing sighs of relief from the wise decision by YS Net to delay the game to 2018. Though if history has taught me anything, it is knowing that a single delay may not always be the last.
So I wager on an early 2019 release and toast to a Shenmue which reaps refinement from an additional period of nurturing.

    5. Brandon Gibbs on

Nice work on the logo & good work so far on the characters too! As always keep up the good work!

    6. Anna-Lucia Stone on

@Mas - Super Hang On, yes! Is in my collection also, and that die-cut sleeve, as always they treat the record's housing as art...almost bought Panzer Dragoon the other day actually but I held back, since I have my eye on the upcoming Sonic release, which I now see will indeed include a choice of quality download as well! Which brings me to...

@Drew - it's looking good, if the company are starting to offer what I assume will be FLAC when they say lossless on a new release, I'd say it's hopeful on others :)

In the meantime neither a games nor a record company but a band who are huge gamers as well, worth checking out are Pryapisme, a bunch of guys from France I first heard some years ago, their Street Fighter II offering in particular (and can be bought in high quality, or can just visit youtube of course though I'm all for supporting the artists but each to their own) and providing the meaning of their name doesn't offend of course (ha), their Sega font name t-shirts are nice quality too...but if anyone is more deeply into sound creations of their own, might want to check out Teenage Engineering gear, it is fellow band-partner-in-crime bringing stuff out of the OP-1 reminding me of a highly futuristic version of the retro sounds from Where's My Bones? on the C64, haha, loving it...

I hope see something like this please!!!!!…

HAHAHA the old lady is from Kung-Fu Hustle!!!!

    9. Bule on

A PDSaga vinyl would be great, but you'd either need to heavily edit, pick and choose the tracks, or it would take a LOT of records to get all the tunes on there.

Looking forward to seeing what will be revealed of Shenmue 3 at this gamecom event :)

    10. Bule on

Heh, I meant Panzer Dragoon 1, not Saga.

    11. stv on

The new logo is MUCH better! I always thought something felt off about it, but I'm glad to see it returned to its original style!

    12. Bule on

@Brandon A. C. Kilgore: yea, but that will be some way further down the line.

Can also vouch for the great Data Discs vinyl releases - Shenmue, as well as Panzer Dragoon Saga and Super Hang-On sound brilliant.

    13. Brandon A. C. Kilgore on

Are we still getting the rewards on time like T-Shirts, Mp3 music, and Busts?

    15. Anna-Lucia Stone on

      Love the logo, Shenmue Team!

    16. Anna-Lucia Stone on

@Drew - with you on the FLAC, mp3 sort of to audio what jpeg is to a sense. What's been really nice on occasion has been when as a matter of course you receive the FLAC version of a vinyl bought, though sadly not the case with these...but that said, what I received was a Shenmue work of art to my mind, glad I bought two, a black one to play and blue one to keep as a treasure. I think your comment in the meantime though is great feedback I might make known to Data Discs, as an extra option for their consideration, you never know...

    17. Husson Eagle on

Don't know why my comments did not post correctly. Should really have a delete button lol. Sorry about that. Overall I am excited, just want the game to be a 10/10 masterpiece.

NIce update, keep up the good work!

    20. Husson Eagle on

I like to see what Yu Suzuki and the team have for Gamescom. I like the integration of characters from movies to the Shenmue realm but correct me if I am wrong, you guys didnt do that for Shenmue and Shenmue 2, so why start now? I think if you go with this approach, you shouldnt just copy from the movie Kung Fu Hustle and paste it to the Shenmue world. You should make characters unique, with their own identity and add the Shenmue twist/ vibe to it. Thats why captivated fans in the first Shenmue game. Hopefully you guys didn't run out of ideas for new captivating characters. Lastly, I'm worried that if the creators of Kung Fu Hustle found out Shenmue 3 character identities were based on their movie, they'd either file a lawsuit or want a piece of the pie. Yu Suzuki set the standard for RPGS and character development with the release of Shenmue. Japanese culture in the game really stood out and made you feel like you were walking the streets of Japan. So now in 2017, anything under that high bar that has been set, is below expectation.

    21. Husson Eagle on

I love the Shenmue 3 logo!! I am also excited to see what Yu Suzuki and the guys bring to the table at Gamescom. I like the new characters but they look really similar to a few characters in the movie Kung Fu Hustle. I think it's a cool concept to integrate characters from the movie in to the Shenmue game but they should be unique, have their own identity and have a Shenmue vibe/twist to it and not be directly copied from the Movie screen and pasted to the Shenmue realm. Correct me if I'm wrong but Shenmue wasn't like that in the past, so why start now? Unless you guys ran out of ideas for character models lol.. I'd also worry about a lawsuit from the creators of Kung Fu Hustle, if they find out you guys are using in-game characters based on the Kung Fu Hustle movie, they'd also want a piece of the pie. Yu Suzuki set the standard for RPG games back when Shenmue first came out on dreamcast. You guys should aim for that now in 2017. You set the standard high so anything under that is below expectations.

Looking awesome. Thanks for changing the logo to something more befitting of the Shenmue name.

      Drew on

Sorry, meant to add that when they turn up the loudness on a CD the amount of time of the album isn't effected sadly.

    25. Missing avatar

      Drew on

Generally not interested in vinyl Anna. The only reason vinyl sounds better than CD is that it's analog, therefore, when they're pressing it when they turn up the loudness the record becomes shorter. With CD's when they do that and butcher the sound quality in the process hence vinyl sounding better even IF it's lower quality bit-rate, not even being low tier lossless like CD's which are 16/44.
Honestly, I wish we could just see DVD or special USB stick releases of said OST's in FLAC format at the level of the master. Sadly, NO video game company has done that yet.
Either the companies have delivered a butchered version of the audio via MP3 and digital delivery or a full OST via CD at 16/44.

PS - for any of you here loving all things Shenmue who might have missed the first pressing or just didn't know this was out there, by popular demand this team of folk have re-pressed this gorgeous vinyl (after several purchases, can vouch for the stunning quality as well as excellent packaging for transit), here:

Fantastic update, all of the above, especially those characters they look like they're going to be truly entertaining additions to those we already know so well...thinking now Tom Johnson, how I miss and wish he was coming back as well!

I'll second what Adam said here also, so glad that your reading of the positive comments here is giving you a boost, that's lovely to read and as for Gamescom, so exciting! Have a fabulous time, us from our neck of the woods here cheering you on :)

I have a question for you guys. What engine are you guys using for Shenmue 3 or are you guys build your own engine.

I like seeing the artwork, and the new logo looks great! Looking forward to seeing what you'll have to show at Gamescon. Everyone at team Shenmue III have a lovely weekend :)

Loving that new logo and it's so good to hear that liked reading all the positive feedback about the delay. I wonder what these 'new announcements' will be? Don't wanna get too excited as it might not be major but we'll see.

I'm a bit worried about how stylized the characters are looking, the proportions look cartoony and that certainly was never a thing in shenmue 1 and 2. They looked blocky but with highly detailed textures that made them look like you were going for something quite realistic. I can't wait to see what you have to show at Gamescom

We love you and if you need more time then take more time. We want a quality game not something made in a rush. The gaming industry has changed in the last 20 years, time to show them that OG (Original Gamers) are all about quality rather than quantity. Shenmue deserves a good ending, deliver it no matter the time it takes. Sam.
