Happy New Year!

Thanks to Shenmue fans everywhere, 2015 saw the start of Shenmue III. 2016 will be a year with noses to the grindstone to make the next installment of Shenmue worthy of the expectations you have entrusted with us. We would like to again ask you for your support and cooperation for all that lay ahead this year.

There are two announcements for the first update of 2016: poll results for the exclusive rewards on PayPal, and the homepage gets a face-lift.

Poll Results

The results are in for the poll posted in the final update of last year asking whether or not Kickstarter Exclusive Rewards should be made available for the Slacker Backer PayPal campaign.

The polling period lasted from December 24, 2015 to January 1, 2016. All Kickstarter Backers who pledged for a reward of $5 or more were eligible to vote. Of the 68,533 eligible Kickstarter Backers, there were 15,110 respondents.

The poll results are posted below. 4,670 of the respondents answered, “Yes, please make the Kickstarter Exclusive Rewards available on PayPal.” 4,009 respondents answered, “No, Kickstarter Exclusive Rewards are for Kickstarter only.” And 6,432 answered, “Either is fine with me.”

Considering the strong response from those of you who felt that the Exclusive Rewards should remain exclusive for the Kickstarter, those Exclusive Rewards will not be made available on the PayPal page as originally promised.

Thank you all for your participation. We hope everyone will continue to let their voices be heard as we go forward with the project.

To all those confused by the Ys math, you are probably forgetting that as publisher, they get a modifier when interpreting public opinion.

Reading the last page of comments I count 8 in favour of the Ys decision, and 28 against it.

So about 22% in favour, 78% against.

But when we apply the "considering a strong response" buff (+30% to an option of publishers choice), the numbers actually come out at 52% in favour, 48% against.

So clearly, no conflict between the Ys decision and the wishes of the guys that just gave them $6 million.

I just want to say on behalf of REAL Shenmue fans all over the world, we apologise for the 4000 selfish, self-entitled pricks who voted "no".

This does NOT reflect the true sentiment in the Shenmue community at all, and we suspect the votes were made by scalpers. Either that, or people didn't understand the question properly.

    3. Tom on January 4, 2016

It should be pointed out as well that the poll was not closed just to kickstarter backers. It was easy enough to copy the website url of the survey monkey page and distribute it freely to the general public.

      Calling for a re-poll of the re-poll! >:-O

Well I paid $300 for the signed collectors on PayPal and $60 on Kickstarter for physical ps4. If I don't get the collectors I'm backing out of the 300 tier, reducing the total project funding. Not very smart for a game that should hit its $10 million goal.

      why do a poll ?
the YES win the poll, but they decide to keep exclusive ! why do a poll then !?

I think they were pretty much screwed the minute they made the mistake of offering so called "Kickstarter Exclusive" items via the Paypal/Slacker Backer scheme.
Now they're damned if they do, and damned if the don't.
I'm guessing they are thinking that with Kickstarter backers outnumbering Paypal backers by 8:1 and having provided 97% of the funding, they're the ones the want least to piss off.
Why they did the poll I'm not sure, maybe they expected a "win" for the No vote, but at the end of the day what's done is done, lets just look forward to the great game we have coming next year.

Michael Huber, where is the massive fanboy!? Or Adam Koralik!? Where are the Shenmue Dojo guys!? Did you guys vote 'no'? Throw your 2 cents down here guys what the hell!

Joel RSG - Awesome Japan, are you reading the comments man!? You see the fans below!? We want you guys to open it up to everyone. Why is it they're shooting themselves down financially here and they actually think the fans want it with less than 1/3 voting that way?!

      I agree with Tailzfox.

reverse the decision immediately YS Net...make it available to all,
increase the funding for your game. do it....right now. Don't listen to the greedy ones, they're less than 1/3 of us, and are not the majority, they're not true fans, and they're ruining it for everyone of us that is. Put them all to the test with an additional poll about Shenmue, you'll find us that know the series likely all voted that 'yes', you make this stuff available to all. That is something a true fan of this series would do, not someone jumping on the bandwagon that doesn't understand the significance of those 2 games place in this industry.

Thank you guys for the update.

This seems like worse news for the game, and disappointing for a few more people than it's pleased, if YS net (or whoever else was involved) agreed with the people that voted 'yes' that allows them to potentially bring in a lot more money. Isn't that the most important thing to the games development? Rare merchandise should be an afterthought, I respect their decision, despite it not being the more popular vote.

I'm just curious, do roughly 2/3 of the people here agree keeping the KS merch exclusive will result in less funding, resulting in less time for everything? Because 1/3 of you are the ones voted for that, if you didn't consider it, *facepalm*, if you did, damn, you're trying to halt additional funding for the development funding of this game over some little capsule toys, etc.

      Grow the hell up!

With the greatest respect to posters and supporters here I think they made the right choice.

I personally have no issues with KS reward s continuing on PayPal site but unfortunately a significant number of backers do, if YSnet ignore this it opens up the possibility of refund requests which would hurt the game and I don't want that. I think the best option would be for Ysnet to figure out different but equally appealing awards to the KS ones and continue crowdfunding with that.

I don't understand the math, but isn't "indifferent" means neutral. So, majority of the voters approve that it's ok for paypal backers to receive same rewards as ours? I hope they can explain it.

    16. Raiden on January 4, 2016

i cant stop crying :'( by every1 saying no has doomed us all shenmue 3 needs more funds and yu sazki tryed to help get more funds by opening the kickstater now u all has doomed this game from happening thnx alot :/ u has doomed the face of SHENMUE 3 :( now where do we go from here even take a look at the paypal site its down i belive they shut it down

    17. bateaulait on January 4, 2016

      I feel betrayed.
Why vote No while Shenmue III still needs funds ?
Why did you make this decision while the Yes lead the poll ?
Why this poll ever exists ?

    18. Tailszefox on January 4, 2016

I'll just say I agree with the majority of people in the comments: I find it unfortunate for PayPal backers to not be offered the same rewards as us. I consider the PayPal campaign to be an extension of the Kickstarter one, so I don't see any issue with providing the same rewards. And, according to the poll, this is also what the majority thinks.

Hopefully, if enough people voice their concerns, this decision will be reversed. I know it's impossible to make everyone happy, but I feel that this particular decision will negatively affect a lot of people.

    19. Raiden on January 4, 2016

then paypal :( funding will be force to shut down you see what u have don people why coudnt u just vote yes i mean what will they offer the paypal users now :( ?? how will we fund if no rewords to paypal users omg u people make things hard

If the decision went the other way, they could just point at the poll results as justification. As it stands, the decision makes no sense and is unjustified. This needs to be amended. On here and on message boards like NeoGAF and the Shenmue Dojo, it is clear that this was the wrong decision to make.

Awesome Japan, you need to reverse this decision.

Now this puts YS net in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't." position, and they don't want to risk almost half the poll backers saying that they were cheated into giving them money for exclusive stuff.

I don't see how beneficial this is to the project, I don't want any exclusivity, It will just erode the final products quality, I'd rather have more funds by giving the kickstarter exclusive stuff available for pay pal.
Can anyone explain me how keeping the stuff for us kickstarter backers be beneficial to us? bragging rights? We already have that, we made it real.

@Tristan because it makes no sense. Going by indifferent and those voted yes, the majority is okay with it. They tried to pitch the "undesired result" as a way to respect those who said no, that they won't. If that was the goal then why bother having a poll? It comes off dirty to go against the result.

So this is democracy? 30,9 % want the rewards for Paypal, 26,5 % are against it, the rest doesn't care so the rewards won't be with the Slacker Backer campaign. I don't get it.

      bjaxx87 on January 4, 2016

So 11102 people were okay with it, 4670 people even supported it, only 4009 people were against it... And you decide to give in to the vast minority?

    28. Zeil999 on January 4, 2016

Looks as though they weren't expecting the solid "yeas" and "no's" to be damn near close to 50/50. I would bet that was the reason they went the route they chose. It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. No matter what they decided, someone was going to be pissed. So stick with what was originally promised so you don't piss off the backers who were in it from the get go and not cheapen the perceived value of being a KS backer.

    29. Michael Winn on January 4, 2016

So 4,670 said yes, 4,009 said no and 6,432 don’t care either way making 11,102 that don’t mind if it is a yes against 4.009 that said no, yet you go with the no vote? This makes zero sense what so ever!!

    30. Kris Holmes on January 4, 2016

Honestly, I put the money in I wanted to at the beginning; so I'm not coming from the angle of "well I wanted this, which now isn't available".

I'm just happy this game is being made, and if it takes -another- reward (whether they be in-game items or not) to push someone over the line into funding that little bit more - I'm all for it.

I don't expect to be the only person, or part of an 'exclusive club' who have a Ryo bobble-head/toy. If someone else wants to donate, after the kickstarter, for that reward I say go for it.

Maybe the compromise is to time-gate it:

Anyone who donated during the kickstarter is in the first wave of physical release goods. Anyone on the PayPal side, is in a 2/3 month delayed release? Gives Ys Net more time to have things made, and the Kickstarter people bragging rights.

    31. Jason on January 4, 2016

      THIS MAKES NO SENSE.

I spent $600 for the PC version and $60 for the PS4 version and now I feel cheated. You can clearly see a majority of people supported the decision to allow Kickstarter rewards for PayPal backers. (4,670 vs. 4,009) In what world does a neutral response count as a strong "NO" for an answer? I almost regret my choice in supporting the campaign and for putting in this much money in Shenmue 3 because of this outrage.

Whatever happened to the majority rule? I've never been this upset in a long time. I just wanted to buy another PS4 copy with the Calling Card DLC. Please get your act together and reverse this decision -- this is not beneficial to YsNet because why limit your backers with this?

    32. Daniel Jewell on January 4, 2016

@Kenth Joki - was thinking the same myself. "We did a poll and just decided the results don't matter anyways. Here's our big middle finger to you Paypal backers, you'll never get our exclusive rewards!"

Allison Bailey on January 4, 2016

I'm really disappointed to hear PayPal backers won't be able to get the Kickstarter rewards. :( The project update said that even though the majority were in favor of letting PayPal backers have the same rewards, they are not being offered because of the "strong response" of the people who were against it. I just want to officially state, I backed Shenmue during the Kickstarter campaign, and I am strongly in favor of letting PayPal backers have the same rewards. I want Shenmue III to be the best game it can possibly be, and limiting PayPal rewards would only discourage backers that might otherwise have contributed additional funding.

    34. JOHNG379 on January 4, 2016

Wow,what a cop out. I feel bad for the people who pledged via PayPal. Take their money but give them nothing in return. I guess the majority doesn't rule here huh?

    35. Kenth Joki on January 4, 2016

The majority said yes going by the poll results, since the I don't care is irrelevant for the pro and nay; the pro won. It was a close poll the but result speak for themselves. I don't appreciate this stance that because it was close, ya decide to save money by denying them the rewards. This does not affect me in no way, I did not donate via PayPal but I just hate seeing a company saying one thing then doing another. Give them what they won. I don't care if its by 1 vote. A win is a win.

    41. Dominik Chraca on January 4, 2016

How's that fair to the PayPal backers? Neutral votes imply they're indifferent and that said without their vote those in favor technically are in the majority.

    42. Missing avatar

      Christopher on January 4, 2016

Uh, how did the team come to the decision not to allow paypal backers access to the KS rewards, when those "for" allowing access to the KS rewards win in terms of vote share individually and combined with the neutral option?

Anyway, the decision is made and there's nothing I can do about that now.

The PC version NEEDS to be added to the slacker backer site immediately. No more waiting, figure out what problems are stopping it from appearing on there and open it up to PC consumers. Beyond that, please get KS upgrades/add-ons out there as soon as possible. I would love to add another copy to my pledge if given the chance.

    43. Chris Brown on January 4, 2016

I wish people hadn't voted no! I want the best Shenmue game possible, and hopefully other backers want that, too. Voting no hurt the game by limiting the rewards Shenmue can sell to raise money. However I'm glad you're listening to backers even if I don't agree with the decision. Happy New Year!
