Happy New Year!

Thanks to Shenmue fans everywhere, 2015 saw the start of Shenmue III. 2016 will be a year with noses to the grindstone to make the next installment of Shenmue worthy of the expectations you have entrusted with us. We would like to again ask you for your support and cooperation for all that lay ahead this year.

There are two announcements for the first update of 2016: poll results for the exclusive rewards on PayPal, and the homepage gets a face-lift.

Poll Results

The results are in for the poll posted in the final update of last year asking whether or not Kickstarter Exclusive Rewards should be made available for the Slacker Backer PayPal campaign.

The polling period lasted from December 24, 2015 to January 1, 2016. All Kickstarter Backers who pledged for a reward of $5 or more were eligible to vote. Of the 68,533 eligible Kickstarter Backers, there were 15,110 respondents.

The poll results are posted below. 4,670 of the respondents answered, “Yes, please make the Kickstarter Exclusive Rewards available on PayPal.” 4,009 respondents answered, “No, Kickstarter Exclusive Rewards are for Kickstarter only.” And 6,432 answered, “Either is fine with me.”

Considering the strong response from those of you who felt that the Exclusive Rewards should remain exclusive for the Kickstarter, those Exclusive Rewards will not be made available on the PayPal page as originally promised.

Thank you all for your participation. We hope everyone will continue to let their voices be heard as we go forward with the project.

The problem isn't entirely the "No" voters (although by definition it's fairly pathetic you wouldn't tolerate backers of this great project something you had earlier dibs on, but that isn't the issue).

The problem is only 22% of backers could be bothered to respond. I expected more from Shenmue III backers.

The second problem is 43% of these respondents could not be bothered either way. It's a simple yes or no question. "Either is fine with me" should never have been offered as a choice, because it leads to weak and/or arbitrary decision making.

Don´t really get it ... +30% say yes, +40% don´t care and because of the +25% "no" sayers, paypal backers doesn´t get the rewards?!
So if the 3rd option wich the majority voted on, is there for no reason, why even make it in first place ffs ?!

    3. Phill on January 5, 2016

Greedy and selfish? We simply want a difference between the awards offered here vs the ones on PayPal. I myself missed out on such things in the past, like the Divinity OS KS CE. But it makes those more exclusive and rare. I had to buy the regular CE instead. Too bad for me. Too bad for these people. They should have backed it when it was up. It's not as if they still can't get the game.

    4. Andrew Pierce on January 5, 2016

It's always disappointing when a poll like this shows there are so many greedy and selfish people out there :(

Also: In the game, please also implement SMAAT2x like The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
It has less issues than the built in Temporal AA.

You shouldn't keep it from those who want it, just because some entitled people think they should've backed it when it originally was running.

As long as you are asking for more money;crowdfunding; during active development of the game. The same rewards and features should be available to everyone.

I selected "I don't care" because I am indifferent. Which in my eyes counts as YES, let them have it if they want it, it's not going to bother me if they do.

Your choice, words, the answers don't align.

Let the god damned people have them if they want them.
I guess really there should've been just Yes and No.

      RUN THE POLL AGAIN.

    8. Tom on January 5, 2016

That should be half the people who voted in the poll who cared one way or the other. Half the people who backed the game makes it sound a little disingenuous.

The reality is, well over half (around three quarters of backers) either couldn't be bothered to vote or couldn't vote, for whatever reason.

On reflection, I Don't Care (either is fine with me) really does seem to be the most accurate outcome.

    9. Tom on January 5, 2016

      @Trong:

The idea is that scalpers who ARE already backing the game would say no to drive up the value of the kickstarter exclusive items, so that when they try and sell them later on eBay or the like, they would get more money for them.

Plus, if you cleared your internet history, you could take the poll as many times as you wanted, so it would have been easy to spend an afternoon or so doing that and thus registering hundreds of votes for NO if you wanted. Try it, clear your internet history and vote again here:
      https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/C9PW9TL

It is also possible that this url got leaked out to non-backers, who either out of spite or being friends of scalpers, also voted NO.

Or, half the people who backed the game really didn't want latecomers to have the same rewards as them. It's possible, it just seems mean-spirited.

    10. Trong on January 4, 2016

I would've done the same decision if I was them. The Yes simply wasn't large enough. And I'm ignoring the I Don't Care votes.

I don't understand the complaints about it not being a KS exclusive survey... Am I missing something? Why would scalpers say No if they're not already backing it? It sounds more logical that PayPal backers who didn't back the KS campaign voted Yes when they shouldn't have voted...

With that said, I voted I Didn't Care. Which means it doesn't matter to me. I'm still for the $2-5 fee for backing late, but can still get the KS rewards.

And oh, put PC back up as a reward! :)

I'm glad I backed this when it was on it's original kickstarter run as I don't see any open for a physical copy of the finished game for PC in the slacker backer campaign.

If I was backing now, I quite frankly wouldn;t as there's no finished PC physical copy version in any of the reward levels.

THIS IS BS. i'm assuming those who voted NO are Freaking scalpers or braggers/greedy who are not a "True Shenmue Fans". why did Ys/awesome japan made that decisions is beyond me as they are the "NO" Minority. we are talking about rising 10 MILLION for crying out loud and now they have ruined it for the majority of fans who waited so long for this long awaited sequel.

    15. Zeil999 on January 4, 2016

      Dan:
If you're only counting the absolutes yes' and no's, it isn't even close to 2/3rds. I saw your comment and you fail to realize that interpretation of the 3rd option is all a matter of perspective. What you see as those people saying "either is fine" as a yes, others could see "either is fine" as a no. That's why I see those votes as indifferent and shouldn't have even been counted. What that 3rd option really tells us is that the true majority is okay with either path YsNet decides. And what we are hearing from the people complaining is actually a minority of the backers who actually responded to the poll. If you voted "either is fine" and you're complaining about the outcome, then you shouldn't have voted for "either is fine" and instead voted "yes".

    16. Dan Asenlund on January 4, 2016

      Zeil999:

It did get more than 2/3 of the votes. See my comment below. (Congress definitely wouldn't have that ridiculous C option in their ballots...)

People are literally being stupid and ignorant. Everyone is whining, saying that they are not respecting the results... 26% against 30% of course they won't go ahead and put the exclusives for PayPal backers, the margin is way to small for confort. FFS people calm down and think before you complain!

    18. Zeil999 on January 4, 2016

Hmmm... If you look at the results much like how congress votes, their decision makes sense. The majority did not get 2/3s of the votes needed to pass the option and the ones who were apathetic about it all were as if they were abstaining from voting. Therefore, the option does not pass. I would bet if the Yeas got 2/3rds of the votes, we would see a different decision.

I don't think most of you are understanding the legal ramifications of allowing the KS exclusive rewards to paypal backers. If a huge majority voted yes then they could probably get away with it, the fact that it was almost 50/50 between Yes/No means they couldn't possibly do it, without risk of someone kicking up a court case.

    21. Missing avatar

Joseph Cooper on January 4, 2016

The people voting YES obviously outnumbered those voting NO, so why is YSNet going against the poll results? The third option of "I don't care" really seems like such a dumb option anyway, because there's no way to factor those into the votes. They're not saying yes and they're not saying no.

Regardless, the people voting YES outnumbered the NOs and so the Kickstarter rewards should be available through PayPal! I want that S3 World Telecom card that I couldn't afford during the original pledge period.

    22. Missing avatar

      @ShenmueLegacy on January 4, 2016

By voting NO you prevent more funds to go into the development of Shenmue III. Therefore, you LOSE. Think about that. Think that you would WIN a better game, if you chose to vote YES.

    23. Scott Ryan Guest on January 4, 2016

Personally I didn't vote in the poll, however, had I done so, I'd have voted for the slacker backers to be able to pledge to the point of getting the same rewards offered in the original Kickstarter. My belief is that a rising tide lifts all ships, and in this case, I would prefer the ship be lifted as high as possible in order to make the game the best it can be. Perhaps running the poll for a second time would afford a more positive result.

It's like something from a parody. Something I would expect from some third rate chancers with no experience.

Ys clearly just don't want to give the rewards to paypal backers for whatever reason but are hiding behind a dodgy poll like cowards instead of just saying so from the start.

    25. Dan Asenlund on January 4, 2016

John Paul Zahary and Xavi P.:

Was it really that close though? Option 3 says "either is fine with me" which sounds much more like a yes than a no, so the result should be 70% don't mind (meaning yes) and 30% no. It would be fun to see these guys run an election. Consider these options on an election ballot:

      A) Clinton for President
      B) Bush for President
      C) Either is fine, I guess

Seriously guys, what's the point of having the C option? *deep sigh*

    29. Matt Depew on January 4, 2016

lolol, so many yes votes, but nooooooope

    30. James Brown on January 4, 2016

Reading the comments it seems that alot of people are confused as to the Paypal rewards and the Kickstarter exclusives. Everything on the Paypal page right now is what you can pledge to and receive. People seem to be thinking that the Paypal options were the Kickstarter options and so they are no longer going to be provided these rewards. Infact the Kickstarter rewards that are at this point still "exclusive" are things like the phone card reward, or the I Am Shenmue 3 rewards for getting your face in the game, or a voice message off Corey Marshall. These are the exclusive rewards...simply the $500 capsule toy pack that's listed on Paypal isn't going to be taken away from you...the rewards on the Paypal page are the same as they always have been and they are not changing or being removed.

In saying that, I think the decision is stupid and the old website looked better. Also please give us back the original Shenmue font, the new one is being thrown about on everything AJ is touching and it's hideous.

    31. Pseudopsia Kite on January 4, 2016

Please don't bother me with polls if you're not going to respect the results.

    32. Norman Granet on January 4, 2016

BTW, I voted "yes". But either yes or no is fine to me.

    33. Norman Granet on January 4, 2016

Maybe... it would have been wiser to set up new tiers exclusively for Paypal backers. The kind of rewards that are a little more expensive to acquire comparing to KS campaign ; so you still open to the "Kickstarter" concept, at the difference that Paypal backers must pay at higher price what Kickstarter backers earned in the first place. Does that makes sense ? We (Kikstarter people) were the first to encourage Ys Net.

    34. Vyse Legendaire on January 4, 2016

It's not the end of the world to exclude the unique rewards since there are still good incentives on the SlackerBacker campaign, but I did think the access to exclusives might spur big donators and repeat donators to pony up.

Can we really rely on the results of this poll given the slim percentage of backers who actually took part?

    35. David Guild on January 4, 2016

Pretty shocking to hear that even with the larger number of votes saying backers were fine with Paypal backers getting exclusive rewards are getting no voice. Even more awful that the 3rd option doesn't have a voice at all. They said they didn't care which is more like a yes vote.

Why bother have the poll if you aren't going to stick with the results.

    36. Missing avatar

Bruno Albino on January 4, 2016

"We hope everyone will continue to let their voices be heard as we go forward with the project."

I don't see much point in having our voices be heard when you just decided to go against our voices in the poll results.

      4,670 is a larger number than 4,009!
The results are clear, why is PayPal being denied the Exclusive Rewards?
This will only result in PayPal getting much less backers.

It just makes me very disappointed with Ys Net since I can see future polls having similar outcomes.

I'm also very disappointed at Shenmue fans, only 15,110 out of 68,533 backers bothered to vote and those who did either "didn't care" or were too selfish.

    37. John Paul Zahary on January 4, 2016

May I ask why people who backed are angry? I could see some disappointment, but why are you angry? They have a game to make and need to make the best decision that they feel comfortable about. If it was a vast majority, then that would be one thing.

Right now, all that matters is the game being made - but is every little thing going to be scrutinized about this campaign? Even though I might have done it differently, still, they are in their right to do what they feel comfortable with as long as the game is being made.

    38. David Brown on January 4, 2016

Non backers, trolls and scalpers were voting on this poll! Or perhaps even somebody with bots and proxies. Please make another poll and only include comment votes by actual backers, on this page.

    39. Elizabeth on January 4, 2016

Unless they're creating a new set of rewards for folks who want to donate in the future (which would actually be brilliant because many kickstarter backers would also buy new rewards), I don't understand this at all. I always knew game developers were weak to the demands of the vocal minority (to the point of ruining their own game), but I never saw it as blatant as this.

    40. Tom on January 4, 2016

      New Poll:

Should the kickstarter exclusive rewards be made available to PayPal backers?

      A) yes
      B) no
      C) scrambled eggs

      I vote C.

    41. John Paul Zahary on January 4, 2016

It seems that because the results were so close, they didn't feel right about having such a huge split in the base (even though there are those are upset now). They probably should have not even offered it.

I respect their decision though. People went all in to show support, so why not allow them to get the best perks - happens all the time on Kickstarter.

    42. Patrick J. Fuller on January 4, 2016

Why would anyone care if someone could buy some Shenmue merchandise? Especially since all proceeds go towards the game. Ridiculous.

    43. Bobi on January 4, 2016

    45. Dan Asenlund on January 4, 2016

Wow. Just wow. So 30% vote yes and another 40% say they don't mind, meaning 70% don't mind if more rewards are offered. But still the result is a no?? First of all, what's up with the option "Either is fine with me"? Isn't that the same thing is saying "yes"? All this option does is confuse the results. But what can you expect really from this Kickstarter campaign, which might have broken Guinness records but has been abysmally confusing from the get-go. Embarrassing streaming shows aside, that other poll comes to mind: "Who do want to see more scenes of in Shenmue III", and Ryo is one of the options (and wins!)... seriously?! People here in Sweden have been laughing at how this campaign has been run and it makes me feel sad as a huge Shenmue fan, so please get your act together...

For all of those people out there assuming "Either is Fine with me." is a vote in favor or against are both wrong.

It is just that, they didn't care either way. I see many comments below taking that section of votes and adding it to your preferred total as a way of justifying that pro or con that side overwhelmingly was the winner because those votes count towards the total you supported.

When in fact they DO NOT.

If less than 33% of backers voted and of that a few hundred more voted to not give the rewards, then so be it.

Lastly, for all of those complaining, the games still getting made, so chill out.

I am disappointed that so many people are so selfish and greedy wanting an "exclusive" reward. There should have been zero votes for no. You would think that backers would want the most amount of funding possible to make the best game possible. It seems that instead there are over 4K trolls that only backed so they can get a collectible item to hold onto for a short time and then flip it to try and make a profit. Watch ebay and amazon after the games release to see how many of these "exclusive" are put up for sale. As for the results decision I will support whatever decision is made. I am sure a lot of discussion went into it and there are behind the scenes considerations to be made that we are not aware of. All-in-all, I am disappointed in those that voted no more than Y's Net.
