I AM SHENMUE 3 Additional Rewards & #YouaskYu Recap

Posted by Ys Net (Creator)

Hello Shenmue Fans throughout the World!

More I AM SHENMUE 3 Rewards have been added, timed better for Shenmue fans across across the globe. There were lots of comments from the European Shenmue community saying they woke up to find all the rewards gone. (Sorry for sneaking them in there while you were asleep!) There is still plenty of space in the Choubu boat harbor waiting area for your pictures!

And! Thank you everyone for participating in the #SaveShenmue Tweetathon! Every day is Shenmue Day, so keep your #SaveShenmue Tweets coming!

If you were too busy playing Shenmue and missed the #YouaskYu Q&A during the Tweetathon, no problem, here is rundown of the all the questions that Yu Suzuki answered: (日本語版はページの下側に!)

Q1; Were there originally 16 chapters in the Shenmue saga or were there 11? Please elaborate as to why some say 16 and some say 11. A;The detailed document I have has 11 chapters. If you include the chapters prepared for the branched storyline, it will be more than 11.

Q2; Is there any chance we can carry on Pledging after the Kickstarter date has closed? A; Thanks for the question, we will look into it.

Q3; At $5 million, exactly HOW open world will Shenmue 3 be, compared to Shenmue 1/2? A; I'm expecting something similar to Dobuita in terms of scale.

Q4; Now that we know Shenmue 3 will not end the Story, do you have a backup plan if it won´t succeed to tell the end? A; I'm going to have to think about having a successor.

Q5; Will Shenmue have online functionality for example Online arcade Highscores or Online 70 man fighting battles? A; It will be more fun, but it depends on budget, so it is still under consideration

Q6; Will you be disappointed if the Kickstarter doesn't raise $10mill for that "open world experience"? A; No I won't be. I am grateful that there's another chance for a new Shenmue. I will make what I can within the budget from your money.

Q7; Will the Tiger scroll translated by Guizang in 1 be in 3? A; Great idea! I will look into it.

Q8; For Ryo Hazuki's model and others, are you going to reuse models and general assets from Shenmue 1 and Shenmue 2? A; I don't plan to "reuse" them, but I will use the good parts as an reference.

Q9; Why do you think Shenmue didn't appeal to the mass audience back then? Would it need to be 'modernized' for today? A; There were many new challenges so that might be the reason. Even so I will do more new challenges this time. Challenge is what's important.

Q10; Can we expect the return of lottery prize in Shenmue 3? May be the first prize can be a figure of Yu Suzuki! A; I would love to include raffles. Thanks. I will need to think about prizes that are more appealing than my figure.

Q11; Will there be any more dinners offered for the $10,000 tier? I hope more can be added! A; We just added them today!

Q12; Will you research latest tech in AI so you can include it in Shenmue 3 to make it a pioneering game like its predecessors? A; Yes. I would like to do challenges in terms of technology

Q13; Is there a possibility to film a production process for example motion capture or dubbing, during development of Shenmue 3? A; Yes. I want to use it to communicate the progress to you.

Q14; Will @CocaColaCo join the Party? A; I'm considering collaboration like that with real companies.

Q15; Do you have any idea if Sega's planning on doing a Virtua Fighter 6? A; I have not heard about it from SEGA.

Q16; What can you tell me of the three blades? A; It means the jobs that use scissors, razors and knives, so barber, cook, and sewer. These are skills for jobs that have a steady need in any era.

Q17; Although a little hint is left in the video, Ryo will he now be able to jump in Shenmue 3? A; Yes. I am researching about new technology to have more natural motions in Shenmue 3

Q18; My ten year old daughter wants to know if she'll be able to use the phone at will in Shenmue 3 like she does in Shenmue 1 A; Look forward for it. There will be many nostalgic scenes. Maybe a tin can telephone as well?

Q19; If future installments of Shenmue become a possibility will we have the option to bring over save data from 3? A; I have not decided it yet.

Q20; Can we expect epic fights like in Kowloon in Shenmue 2 and a similar battle fight system? A; There is "Battle System expanded", in the stretch goal. Things like this will enhance the battle to make it better and more fun than Shenmue 2

Q21; Have you thought about making each future chapter after Shenmue 3 a expansion that expands the chapters one by one? A; I am not considering it at the moment.

Q22; Will we start Shenmue 3 with some items/skills/scrolls from Shenmue 1 & 2? A; The platform is different, so we can't do it.

Q23; Should we expect any Sega related stuff in Shenmue 3 like arcade games or toy capsules? A; There is a possibility.

Q24; Were there any gameplay elements for Shenmue 1 and 2 that had to be cut due to budget constraints? A; Yes. I wanted the ramen noodles to be soggy after some time, but I couldn't include it. I wanted to include details like that to make it real.

Q25; Will the "Shenmue Trial" be used for feedback to improve the game like Square Enix have with the FF15 demo? A; I would definitely want to get feedback, so I'm looking into how we can have such system in place.

Q26; Will everything be voice acted the same way as 1 and 2? Or will budget constraints not allow 100% voice over all the time? A; Full voicing will be possible if we have enough funding.

Q27; Would love to hear Mandarin voice acting alongside Japanese in #Shenmue3, could we make it stretch goal? A; Under consideration.

Q28; What's the I.Q. score of Fukuhara-san? A; Maybe something like 86?

Q29; I was wondering did you get Ryo Hazuki name from Ryudo Uzaki that was a Japanese musician? A; Nope.

Q30; My question is why is not possible to use (Shenmue Passport) models for the Shenmue 3? A; I'm considering about adding some functions from Shenmue Passport.

Q31; Will there be official Kickstarter/Shenmue 3 forums to discuss and give feedback throughout the development process? A; I would definitely want to get feedback, so I'm looking into how we can have such system in place.

Q32;Can we expect custom clothing for Ryo Hazuki? It would be great feature to able to style Ryo Hazuki as we want. A; There's a function to change Ryo's jacket for backers pledging above $250. Customizing for other clothes are under consideration.

Q33; Why was the Dragon Mirror hidden under a cherry tree, and not a safe place like the basement? A; Iwao thought the place under Cherry blossom tree is safer.

Q34; Where did Ryo get his band aid? A; It didn't appear in Chp.1, but there was a martial arts event, and the scar is from the final match.

Q35; What is your favorite movie? A; My favorite 3 are: The Hustler, Casablanca, Roman Holiday. I love Billiards, and I still play it sometimes.

Q36; Will Shenmue 3 be compatible with the project Morpheus VR headset for the ultimate second life experience? A; I feel that VR offers great possibilities.

Q37; Will there be a pet dog in Shenmue 3 to call, look at and feed? A; Depends on budget.

Q38; Shenmue's core plot is basically Hamlet - are you a Shakespeare fan & has that been an influence? A; Sorry, but I have not read Hamlet. I know Hamtaro though.

Q39; What did YU name the kitten? A; I think I named her with dog names, like Pochi or Gontaro.

Q40; How was your day? A; Today is Shenmue Day, so I went to be with everyone on Twitter. Lots of people are participating, and I couldn't be happier. The rewards went over well and completely sold out. Thank you so much!

Q41; Will we see a Shenmue soda (can be just a can) and what would it taste like? A; If there is any interested beverage firm out there, please contact Ys Net!

Q42; Will Ryo learn the value of forgiveness in Shenmue 3? A; Please play Shenmue 3 for that answer!

Q43; Do you have a rough idea how many people will be in the development team for Shenmue 3? A; That will vary depending on the Kickstarter budget.

Q44; Since relationships between characters will be more prominent, will we see something like a multiple choice conversation system? A; I am thinking about dialogue selection system

Q45; I always wondered how Ryo, being Japanese, could communicate so easy in China. Can Ryo speak Chinese? A; That's a touchy subject...let's not touch it shall we?

Q46; Can you confirm that guns will never be a part of Shenmue gameplay, not for Ryo or any other playable character? A; I am not thinking about including guns as a weapon at the moment.

Q47; Will Ryo finally eat and have other bodily functions? A; I don't have any plans for implementing that in Shenmue 3.

Q48; Why does Ryo have a Saturn under his TV in Shenmue 1 but no games? Was Iwao using the promise of a game to keep Ryo focused? A; That sounds about right. Let's go with that.

Q49; Mr. Suzuki, what is your favorite kind of music? A; I like Jazz and Rock.

Q50; Why does Iwao Hazuki love carrots so much? A; Yes! Iwao's most favorite food is carrots! *jokingly*

      @ Khanh Vu
I understand better your point of view now, thank you for explaining ;)
But I don't see why it makes the need of a button for this.
First of all, you assume what the sets are going to be, but we actually don't know, it might be mostly in towns, not in the wild mountains. And if there's that kind of sets you're thinking of, jumping could be handled automatically, like, as I said, Uncharted.
Part of what makes Shenmue look cinematographic is also because characters don't behave weirdly. If you give that opportunity, you lose part of the immersion in my opinion.
I still don't see the need for a dedicated button for jumping, not now we have so much evolution in "parkour" and how to handle obstacles in non-platform games. The dedicated jump is an opportunity to fail an action (that's how it was implemented into games), I don't think it's a relevant component in Shenmue's gameplay. We have QTE, fighting and mini-games for that part.

@Yohmi, the environments in Shenmue 3 are more organic and natural as we're now in the mountains. It'd be pretty weird to force Ryo to walk all the way around a stream or a bunch of rocks when we can just jump over it to cross the other side, or perhaps jump over a fence. THAT is more realistic and adds to realism. As there is ALOT of running/walking in Shenmue, it is also neither fun to have to take a bunch of stairs when we can just take shortcuts by jumping over ledges. If there is a small uphill cliff, Ryo could just jump and climb up instead of running around the hill to reach the destination, it's a natural motion. And whether or not Ryo jumps depends on you, the player's input. You don't have to make him constantly jump around the town like a lunatic as some people are suggesting. If he does that in the game then it would be the player's fault, it was their input. I'm not seeing how adding a jump button hurts the gameplay, as we are no longer in flat city alleyways but natural environments that require a lot more traversing, where being able to take shortcuts would be pretty significant to the player experience.

    4. Scherge on

Completely agree. I remember recognizing NPCs (I was tempted to write "people" just now:-) when I passed them on the street. That has NEVER happened before or after, in any other game.

However, I do think the phrasing of that answer - or at least, its translation - was a little unfortunate. "something similar to Dobuita in terms of scale" sounds like this is the entirety of the game, not three big areas like Dobuita. It also doesn't sound like anything that keeps you occupied for more than 5 hours, unless there's a lot of backtracking. Then again, I don't have enough time to play games these days, so I'd definitely prefer a densely packed 5 hours to a drawn out 20 like in other open-world games...

      TCprod on

He didn't say the entire game will be a Dobuita sized playing field, there are three major areas, sounds more like each of these will be at least Dobuita caliber areas. That's not bad people, especially for villages in the mountains.

Not to mention, Dobuita is quite a detailed place, you just ran through it following a walkthrough if you haven't noticed.

This is a big problem, that every so called triple-ayyy games nowadays feature freakin major cities, they've not only become too similar to each other, but they have also desensitized you to things like Shenmue's attention to detail. Even if the scale is smaller, what you see you have full accessibility for, unlike the closed doors marathon in most other games.

    6. Scherge on

While Neel's transformation from fan to defeatist was a bit sudden, he does have a point: When I heard there was a "Shenmue III" Kickstarter, I immediately checked out the campaign. I was disappointed by the pitch video, general lack of information and missing physical PS4 SKU. I pledged anyway and raised my pledge once the PS4 disc was confirmed. However, there are still a lot of unknown variables. That Q&A above doesn't answer many questions, and the answers it does give are, frankly, a bit underwhelming. Ryo's story will not be concluded in Shenmue III. The game world will only be the size of one part of the first game (which was smaller than its sequel). Everything else is "under consideration" and/or "depending on budget". Let's admit it: That's thin. I'm currently backing at the 250-dollar level (which is an insane amount, considering my very German/boring mentality), but I might reduce that pledge later, depending on where this campaign is going.

HOWEVER, I'm pretty sure I'll never drop below the 60-dollar tier. I've waited so long for the story to be continued (well, concluded, actually, but let's not split hairs:-) that I'm treating myself to this. Also, even though I wasn't very impressed by anything Yu Suzuki has produced over the last ten years, HE STILL IS YU SUZUKI, the godfather of the modern arcade! He paved the way for racing games, for shooting games, for 3D games, and he came up with the vision of Shenmue. Buying a game from him at full price, even if it's sight unseen, is the least I can do to show my appreciation of everything he's done for gamers over the last 30 years. If Shenmue III kicks ass - and I haven't given up on that hope yet - all the better!

Its a bit strange that you pledged towards this in the first place.
I mean it almost seams like you did it just to troll.
I migth be mistaken though its a bit strange to first Back it and then cancel the pledgde in addition to claim one is a fan of the franchice..
Not only that, but even boast about it in the comment section.
That last part have all my warning signs going off.

    12. Vaev on

@Neel looking at all the other projects you've backed, you are the most afraid of Shenmue failing to deliver? I understand, but it seems like you have been on Kickstarter quite a while, why are you, a self-proclaimed Shenmue fan, deciding to ultimately pull you pledge? If we all did that we'd have no Shenmue 3...

    13. Yohmi on

      @ Khanh Vu
I must say I don't follow you on that specific detail. I don't think that being able to jump around makes the exploration more exciting or realistic. Do you jump around when you're browsing into a town or walking a path ? I don't know, I did that as a kid (and I really enjoyed it), I did that as a super cop in Crackdown (and I really enjoyed it), but I don't see how it'd improve the experience and give more realism in Shenmue, where the exploration is more about roaming in (not randomly) designed places, and doesn't rely on dexterity. Again, if there are some segments where you have to jump (like those rocks we can see on the footage), it'd be quite natural to allow the character to automatically jump when we go toward that direction (like Zelda Ocarina of Time, or Uncharted if I remember well). And adding that move when going into fighting mode wouldn't sound crazy to me (though I don't really care). But I don't see Ryo jumping on crates, in the middle of a marketplace, or else, for no good reason. Shenmue is a game where you walk more than you run, where you try to blend in the population. I can't recall seeing anyone jumping today when I was on the street. It doesn't sound quite right to me, and I can't find a situation where jumping would have improved the experience in previous games, and could add something (needed) to the upcoming game.
Things that'd improve the game could be for example hearing people when you walk by, having the ability to walk into a crowded street and sneak into the space between people (without having to avoid them or you hit a wall), that's definitely relevant improvement in my opinion, while jumping everywhere… well… not really, no.
Of course it's only my opinion :)

    14. Khanh Vu on

@Yohmi - Being restricted in character movement to just walking/running gets very tedious and isn't realistic, but I never said that correlates to Shenmue being a boring game as a whole, but rather that particular aspect of Shenmue has not aged very well. Other aspects of shenmue like the combat, character interaction, mini games, and story make it an amazing game. What's surprising to me is that people are asking for the EXACT same game as previous shenmue's, whereas Suzuki-san has ideas to make the game series even BETTER, and it's surprising people don't trust his input and creative freedom when he's already given us many many amazing games in the past.

    15. Richard "nightc1" on

Only a non-fan of Shenmue would throw money at the game series and then pull it back because of fears (let alone post about it in these updates). "Shenmue" isn't some random game series and Yu Suzuki is not just some average developer. This is serious gaming passion! This series is easily my favorite of all time and we are getting a real sequel. Even if it's not to the full level of minigames and other distractions, the core game will easily be worth the wait and I can only imagine it'll be better than any other similar series out there. It's a shame people can't see a pre-order for the sequel to one of the best series ever created is worth $60 retail or $29 digital. I mean, people buy stupid war games for $100 with content cut out to be sold as DLC and purchasable in-game currency.

    16. Ari Tomi Stenberg on

Most those questions was already knowed. I guess you dont want to answer too much for now.

    17. Neel Sawhney on

Thanks Nick for the clarification. I'm probably going to stop pledging since I still think it's too high considering we don't know what the game will be like yet. I've always been a huge fan of Shenmue, and I want to support developers on kickstarter, but I'm not planning on putting my money down blindly on a game just because I love the franchise. We'll see what happens. It's not like you can't buy the game after the kickstarter, and I'm more inclined to do that than spend $60 on a hard copy just for the sake of the name "Shenmue"

    18. Yohmi on

      @ Khanh Vu
Do you consider Shenmue I and II to be boring games ?
It sounds pretty surprising I must say.

What the hell is a "16:9 texture" buddy...

    20. Khanh Vu on

With the advancement in game engine tech, more things can be done in character movements to increase that level of realism. It's a natural step up.

    21. Khanh Vu on

Not being able to jump and instead being only restricted to just running while exploring is boring and not realistic at all. Shenmue is a game based on realism.

    23. Edward -EI-O- on

We need to update the main trailer on this page to something that would draw in people new to the series. This kickstarter could thrive even more with NEW Shenmue fans!

I also hope, like T_Vella, that "jump" won't be a button action in the exploration mode (like in a platform game). And unlike Russell, I can't foresee the future nor read people's mind. And I saw a video of the alpha with a character jumping around (maybe was it to test the hitbox, maybe it was just the programmer having fun, but it was happening anyway), so I think it's totally fine to express our opinion about it ;)
Yu Suzuki keeps telling us that he wants player's feedback. That's part of it. No dedicated button for jump, turn Ryo's face back into human mode, no gun, and no kamehameha either ⌒⌒ And I also hope the community will keep priorities in mind when voting to the upcoming polls and give their feedback and suggestions. I'd be sad to see money spent into co-op, online leaderboards, multiplayer battle, instead of better animation, more NPC and side quests… that's only my opinion though :)

Wow, if 5M only covers an area the size of Dobuita, either he is planning on having crazy detail (which would be nice) or games like Sleeping Dogs (which I'm very roughly estimating is about 20 Dobuitas) must have a budget of 100M.

Jumping, climbing, grabbing onto ledges would be GREAT. Replaying Shenmue 1 & 2, Ryo's movements are TOO LIMITED. It hasn't aged well at all. So Jumping would be awesome, in addition to more natural human movements.

    27. Khanh Vu on

I feel Jumping will be necessary to traverse the mountain and natural landscape in Shenmue 3. If you guys don't like jumping then don't press the button, simple! :P

I would personally like to see a Jump button!

Why is everyone so twitchy about this project? I know we all care dearly for Shenmue but I'm sure Yu-San knows what he's doing.

We won't exactly have Ryo just jumping around the place like a game of Quake. It'll probably be more like a sort of contextual type of jump to get into higher places or over smaller objects.

You can't tell me that none of you ever had the idea of hopping up onto the service platforms in the Harbour.

Agree with T_Vella, Jumping just feels unnecessary in a game like Shenmue.

Don't want Shenmue 3 to feel like GTA

Hi Neel. The way I read it, Yu Suzuki is suggesting that, at the $5,000,000 pledge level, the game will be at around the size of Dobuita. However, I'd hope that by extra funds added beyond the $5,000,000 via Kickstarter (and also by what a lot of fans are asking for - an option to be able to pledge further beyond the end of the Kickstarter) then it will expand the project's scope further.

He is clear that he will do the best he can with the funds generated. Please bear in mind that the purpose of the Kickstarter is not strictly as a preorder service. Whilst we're getting a copy of the game, our pledge is a vital part of funding development of this very unique and very special game.

Obviously, we're all hoping that the team are able to create a AAA title befitting the previous games. With so many of the original team involved we can have confidence in the pedigree of those making the game and it's merely down to us to play our part and help the Kickstarter achieve as many of the Stretch Goals as possible in order to ensure the best possible version of the game.

@Neel Swahney That's how much Hardcopies cost these days. Get the digital if you don't feel its worth it for a game we've waited 14 years for.....

    36. Neel Sawhney on

If Shenmue 3 is not going to be as big in scope or size as previous Shenmue games then why are we being charged $60 for a hard copy of the game?

I'm not sure if everyone knows this but Q48 queries why Ryo has a Saturn but no games. You can actually win the Space Harrier and Hang-On games in the Super Tomato stores and play them at home on the Saturn.

MMM It was cool if one of the question was: "we will see some remastered edition of shenmue 1 and 2?".
I know that there is work and need money...but it will be a good commercial operation. I defintly buy a remastered edition of them (just to have the support of 16:9 texture^^)
