Corey Marshall back for 3!!!

Hello Everyone!

Just in! Corey Marshall, the actor who did the English voice acting for the main character Ryo in Shenmue 1 & 2, is now confirmed for Shenmue 3!

The support for Mr. Marshall to reprise his role as Ryo has been just overwhelming!

We would all like to thank Corey-san for coming back, and especially for all the support he has given to Shenmue over the years.

Corey is as excited for Shenmue's return as we all are, and to help out, he has magnanimously offered his voice for a special reward. Yes, that's right--get a personal message from Ryo!  Do not miss this opportunity to get a very special message from Ryo himself. Maybe one those classic Ryo one-liners?

The $1,000 Reward for the Corey Marshall as Ryo Voice Message will include the $500 Reward. The Ryo Voice Message will also be included in the Rewards for $2,000 and up.

The Man as The Man
The Man as The Man

Still ahead later this week we have some highly anticipated Rewards in the works and almost ready to go up, so keep it here!

What's Shenmue?

The finishing touches are being put on the new video to help spread the good word of Shenmue. There have been lots of great ideas and fan videos already out there and we would like to use them all if we could! But we have some great footage on the way to let everyone know about our favorite video game of all time.

As the update states: "The support for Mr. Marshall to reprise his role as Ryo has been just overwhelming!"

      Corey is fine.
Ya could tell in this thread which ones never played the first 2 Shenmue games.

Dual audio.. Please. I love both performances regarding the main voice actors.

While I am very happy Corey is back as Ryo (and hope a few of the other actors for the main characters such as Eric Kelso, Lisle Wilkerson, Akasha Scholen, and Paul Lucas can return also), I do hope the voice direction will be given careful attention for this game. The English voice direction in Shenmue I and II was iffy for the most part, with some decent performances being heard along with some rather mediocre showings, too. I really hope an experienced director/producer for English voice work from the U.S. will be hired to bring the best out of the cast involved for Shenmue III!

Also, I agree with a lot of the fans that a Dual Language option would be a great feature.

Good update and good to hear the english voice from Ryo will be back. But please include both language tracks in the final game!

The message by Corey Marshall is also nice even though it`s for the deeper pockets...
BUT you need to be more specific, will this just be an mp3 the backer gets, will it be integrated into the game and Ryo says it in the game, ....

    7. Norman & Victor on July 2, 2015

Japanese voices are mandatory. So don't forget dual audio option

      @SolidSonicTH

I understand how you feel. But the game itself, Shenmue III, is expected to be epic - Regardless. Don't let the lack of what you expected as Kickstarter rewards (Which for the most part, is out of Yu Suzuki's control), deter you from supporting the man that brought us Shenmue I and II, as well as his other genuine classics before them. And if your previous lack of faith toward Shenmue III's kickstarter was due to a lack of a physical PS4 edition as a Kickstarter reward, trust me when I say that, Sony WANTS to produce physical PS4 editions of the game for sale, down the line. However, they just won't make it available as a Kickstarter reward. That's all.

So have faith, and like Yu Suzuki says "Be patient". Because, it WILL come.

      : )

You've saved my interest in this project. The English voice acting for the original Shenmue was nothing special (and, in fact, quite hokey) but the fact that you're trying so hard to solidify the original Shenmue experience for the fans is enough to pull me back in.

I really hope the game itself delivers but as far as creative integrity, I feel like this project has it.

Corey Marshall is back? Of course he's back. This is what he and Yu have wanted for weeks.

Domo arigato Corey Marshall, Yu Suzuki and the Ys Net team!

i'm not a fan of english dub but it's awesome that original english voice of ryo is back for more =]

    18. FlamingFirewire on July 1, 2015

Awesome! Great to hear that he'll be back to reprise his role. Hopefully this speaks well for a majority of the other cast members in both Japanese and English where possible :)

Come on guys! Do you wanna double this money???
      Announcing the following then:
1- remaster of the first and second Shenmue on digital and on Disc 90$ for both
      2- ps4 blue ray disc version 60$
3- put together a nice trailer with some basic gameplay.

    20. Alex Spivak on July 1, 2015

What kind of special message is it? Can we request him to say anything we want?

@Alex Craske I agree with you, but I'd rather have the choice. If i feel that the English voice over is so bad that it makes me laugh and despair, then I'd switch to the original voice over with subtitles (and it's a French guy saying this).

A bit like these KS videos. I'm sad they didn't include optional subtitles in the Japanese versions because (and i'm really, really sorry for the voice actor) the English ones feel so cheap that they killed the hype when I was donating and I can't show them to friends to convince them to get involved.

ps : Hopefully, someone understood this as well and made an alternative KS video (link posted here earlier).

some folks probably want the voiceover to be as it was in the two origional games but id like to see some more emotion this time round, in the characters and the voice acting

      @Exiled - I didn't realise a subjective opinion could be a fact...

Great news, but like others have mentioned I hope Japanese with English subs is available as an option too.
Having played dubbed Shenmue 1 and subbed Shenmue 2, I'd like both options to be available.

      Great! ^_^

Maybe it's an idea to add multiple copies of the game as a reward tier? As long as there is no paypal option, it would be an easy method to help out a friend to pledge to the kickstarter if they don't have a creditcard.

A simple and effective plan to help Shenmue is adding NEW backers among people you know:

1.) Backers, kindly ask 2 or 3 of your gaming friends to each give $29 for Shenmue. This video serves as a good introduction: https://www.youtube.com/watch… This article is another good intro to Shenmue: http://noobdigest.com/shenmue-who/

2.) $29 is very reasonable for this great game (ideal amount for people who don't know about it yet but are interested in video games generally)

3.) If we all do this and reach 2-3 new people among our friends/co-workers etc. this Kickstarter reaches well over 100K backers!

Keep posting on Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels and PERSONALLY contact people you know or speak to friends about this campaign...thanks.

    32. Scherge on July 1, 2015

      @Alex Spivak
I would totally pledge for a Dreamcast version! :-)

Then again, I'm pretty sure Sony, SEGA and possibly Ys Net are already secretly discussing how to remaster (or at least port) Shenmue 1 and 2. My biggest fear is that, if I have to start over from scratch, I won't be as patient with the mini games and day job activities as I was 15 years ago... :-/

    33. Pass_the_M on July 1, 2015

Ok cool that Corey is back but I really hope they don't purposely make the dub cheesy, the era of bad VA being acceptable has been long over. or at the very least let us choose the jpn dub.

    34. Vigaman on July 1, 2015

YES! Welcome back Corey!! So happy about this news. Looking forward to hearing you as Ryo in Shenmue III!

    35. Ryan Lloyd on July 1, 2015

fantastic news, agree with others that an updated video with the correct Ryo voice acting would be really nice to see and spur on some more pledges.

This is awesome! Welcome back Corey!

    40. KakKa Carrot Cake on July 1, 2015

@Alex Craske, no, that's a fact. English voice actors in japanese games just suck.

    41. Tyler Waldman on July 1, 2015

      Nifty!

Now, since this obviously means we're getting a dub, we can stop talking about it in theoretical terms. Please take lessons from the first two games and cast and record it with a company that knows what they're doing using talent local to wherever you record. Tokyo doesn't exactly offer a wealth of anglophone talent, nor the best English scriptwriters. New Generation, for example, has a studio in Shanghai and can fly actors there to produce on the cheap for Asian companies like Ys Net. They also have an LA-area studio, as do Studiopolis, NYAV Post and Bang Zoom.

As long as I can choose to play with japanese voices and Masaya as Ryo I'm ok with this. Although I agree, the english dub was terrible, and I hope bad VA won't scare off people who are new to the series. Maybe they can improve the directing of the cast, I don't know.

    45. On July 15th, tweet #SaveShenmue all day on July 1, 2015

AWESOME news! Wouldn't be right without the original voice of Ryu. I just hope he doesn't become a parody of himself, and takes the lines seriously like he did in Shenmue 1 and 2.
      Corey Marshall FTW!

HOORAY!!!! Great news!!!!! Welcome back Corey!

    48. Alex Craske on July 1, 2015

@Exiled - That's your personal opinion, a lot of people would much rather listen and understand, allowing themselves to fully immerse themselves, instead of needing to read everything.
This makes the game feel more accessible to others, I'm not sure how many new players would want to pick up a game in a foreign language... so it'll more likely be much more profitable like this.
