About

Sorry it didn't work out!

We're sorry this Kickstarter didn't work out, everyone!  We're going to pick Cannibal Lottery back up in 2020 or later and try again.  In the meantime, if you enjoy our gay games, be sure to check out Morningdew Farms: A Gay Farming Game!

Y Press Games, the company that always delivers crowd-funding rewards on time, has a new dystopian political visual novel in the works written by author Yamila Abraham!

Govern a planetary settlement dependent carnivorous aliens for survival. Hold Cannibal Lotteries to decide which of your people will feed your benefactors. Should you sacrifice the sick, the elderly, criminals--or should every life be at risk?

Get it right or your people will revolt and you'll be the one on the cannibals' table!

Hi! I'm Masa Murda! Once upon a time my people were traveling through space trying to find a new planet to live on because we totally wrecked our old one. We landed on some skunky world right before we ran out of fuel. The place didn't even have oxygen!

Turned out okay, though--cuz we were followed.

BY A BUNCH OF FREAKING CANNIBALS!

We needed a place to live and the Providers needed meat, so they fast-track terraformed and set us up real nice on the new world...y'know, so they could eat us.

Thanks to our tech-savvy cannibal buddies we have food, shelter--oxygen, and we only have to kill around one person a month to feed to them. Pretty sweet, right!

Governor Faleena Dancy has the super-fun job of handling the cannibal lotteries each month. She's got a lot of incentive to get things right, because our cannibal friends threatened to eat her if she screws up.

Actually, they'll eat all of us if she screws up. Did I mention they turn into berserk monsters when they get too hungry? They rampage and start eating people alive--it's hilarious!

Faleena's actually pretty good at her job--probably too good, because we colonists hate her. Her best friend is one of the cannibals!

People figure Faleena's a cannibal sympathizer and talk about revolting all the time. As if she didn't have enough problems! AH HA HA HA HA HA HA!

I'm the editorializer at the colony news station, and I think this cannibalism stuff is a hoot! I'm also the one who's going to be giving you all your nifty puzzles to solve, and I'll be there after the endings whenever you screw up. Guess we'll be seeing a lot of each other!

Cannibal Lottery is 15 lengthy chapters of dystopian political intrigue filled with harrowing choices and bonus puzzles.

Earn stats, activate flags, and manage your budget in a way that will keep both your people and the cannibals happy.

All choices matter, and will affect the likelihood of a colonist revolt, a cannibal rampage, a mental breakdown, a hostile cannibal takeover, a wildcard event, or your becoming a sacrifice yourself.

Determine who among your staff is an ally or an enemy while also deciding whether or not to form an alliance with the cannibal leader.

Decide how much or little to trust your best friend, the cannibal Dal-Tor, and choose how to use resources to benefit the future of colony or the cannibal-human alliance.

Throughout it all, you'll face truly horrific choices, unthinkable situations, and cringe-inducing horror which is only made palatable through the antics of Cannibal Lottery's zany mascot, Masa Murda.

  • Every Choice Effects a Stat or a Flag
  • Full of Twists that Will Make Your Jaw Drop
  • 15 Chapters and 3 Bonus Chapters to Unlock
  • Puzzles, After Death Scenes, Dynamic Effects
  • 150,000 words, Hundreds of Images
  • 50+ Steam Achievements, Dozens of Endings
  • An Original Sound Track

...And this Kickstarter will determine if we have Full Voice Acting by AAA Voice Actors!

Governor Faleena Dancy
The Providers appointed Faleena to the governor position after eating the former governor, Faleena's husband, Ludrin. To the surprise of everyone, Faleena not only accepted her husband's former post, but appears to be governing in favor of the cannibals who ate him. The reasons why are likely only known by her closest friend, the cannibal Dal-Tor. Faleena does her best to govern the colony while raising the baby born after her husband's death.

Provider Emissary Dal-Tor
Dal-Tor is the intermediary between the cannibals and humans and spends most of her time in Faleena's office. Thousands of years old, she's found meaning in the deep relationship she has with Faleena and her daughter. Both cannibals and humans question what her true interest is in Faleena.

Vice Governor Malek
While the governor is appointed to her seat, the vice governor Malek was elected by the people. He always places their concerns over that of the cannibals, causing him to often butt heads with Faleena. Malek's power is limited, but he uses his influence as best he can.

Assistant to the Vice Governor Sharin
Sharin is technically Faleena's assistant also, but has shown a strong preference toward serving Malek over her. At 75 years old Sharin is deeply troubled by a policy that switches a younger lottery winner with a parent or grandparent. Faleena's support of this policy has caused strife between them.

Lord Crieghton, Ruler of the Providers
Crieghton is the cannibal Faleena must answer to when she takes risks with the lotteries. His goal is to feed his 34 people as much food as possible, and he resents the small rations they endure while the colony grows. Crieghton can order the 'Sacrificial Replacement' of Faleena if she breaks any of the rules in the agreement made between the colonists and Providers.

Lottery Commissioner Gray
Gray has the unenviable job of facilitating the sacrifices after a lottery winner is chosen. His weight is not an issue to him, but he wishes he didn't have to deal with Dal-Tor constantly mentioning how much she wants to eat him.

Media Liaison Zalby
Zalby's job is to coordinate between the governor's office and the colony press. It's unknown if they are loyal to Faleena or Malek, but the news that airs about Faleena is primarily negative.

Ednea
Now close to one year's old, Ednea is the baby girl Faleena learned she was pregnant with shortly after her husband died.

News Editorializer Masa Murda
Masa Murda's official job is making Faleena's life difficult by reporting on her in the worst light possible. While the other news anchors maintain an air of objectivity, Masa is happy to make edgy jokes at the governor's expense. Her unofficial job is to give players puzzles and talk to them after they get an ending.

Goals

$12,000 - Getting Funded.  This is a gigantic game and we need your help to make it happen. Please consider purchasing one of our perks or making a donation, no matter how small.

If you can't support us financially, please help by spreading the word.  We would REALLY appreciate this.  Scroll down to the Social Media section to see how.

Y Press Games places huge importance on delivering perks on time, and we haven't failed yet (see the Risks and Challenges section). We won't take your support for granted!

$15,000 - Partial voice acting. We would love to bring in some amazing voice actors to help bring our characters to life.

$18,000 - Masa Murda Animated.  A pivotal scene will end with a few seconds of Masa Murda fully animated.  We really hope we get this, because it's a hilarious and disturbing scene!

$20,000 - Full voice acting. Please help us to reach this monumental goal. It will add so much value for players if we're able to fully voice the game.

$23,000 - Cure After-Ending.  This stretch goal will give players an opportunity to see what happens to Lushland Colony after the Providers are cured of their cannibalism.

$25,000 - Partial AAA voice actors. We'll have some amazing voice actors for you if we hit the $20k stretch goal, but we'd love to bring in some AAA voice actors for the most important roles. This involves working with agents of top talent and paying big money to bring them in.  With this budget we'd be able to bring in one or two AAA voice actors, like Sean Chiplock and other agented VA talent from hit anime shows and games.

$30,000 - Early Delivery.  If we hit this stretch goal we will deliver the game in October 2019 (at the latest) instead of November.  We will be able to do this by utilizing both our line artists full time to get the art done ahead of schedule.

More to Come!  If we hit some of these goals we'll add more to keep things interesting!

Team

Yamila Abraham - Heading the project is me, Yamila. I've made my living as an author for 14 years and then switched to making games full-time in September 2017.

I love writing horror (and romance).  I think cannibals are a monster with huge untapped potential.  I love the psychological implications of being eaten and stories about unavoidable sacrifice.

I'm the writer, music producer, and project lead for Cannibal Lottery.  This is our third game and we're pulling out all the stops to make it a great one!

Of course, I wouldn't have a hope in heck of pulling this off by myself.  I rely on my awesome team to make these games.

ViviChibi, me, and Steve are the core team for all Y Press Games games and have been together from the beginning.

ViviChibi - ViviChibi is the programmer for all Y Press Games games. She's able to pull off amazing things with the Ren'Py software.

Steve Warky Nunez - When and if we hit the voice acting goal, Steve will be the one to find our talent and handle all production aspects of getting lines for the game.  A prominent voice actor himself, he has amazing connections in the VA world.

MJ Barros - The overall look of Cannibal Lottery is dictated by the artwork of our line artist, MJ.  An artist from Chile, MJ has made producing art for Cannibal Lottery their full-time job.  We're thrilled by their dedication and talent.

Zsardito - Zsardito is our main colorist.  They've done incredible work on defining the unique 'horror' palette of Cannibal Lottery.

ShinigamiKitty - ShinigamiKitty is our loyal flatter. They lay down the flat colors for the colorist to work from.  This is ShinigamiKitty's second game working with us after they were drafted from the backers of the To Trust an Incubus Kickstarter.

Le Perrugine - The Italian art studio Le Perrugine is another line artist we've tapped to create sprites and assets.  They're ready to step in to cover main line-art duties if MJ has any problems.  We've learned you always need backups to prevent delays on shipping games!  This is Le Perrugine's second game with us (but they were a graphic novel artist for us when we were Yaoi Press).

Elle Rei - Elle is our incredibly talented background artist.  She designed the unique look of Lushland Colony.  This is Elle's second game with us.

Fairfaxleasee - Fairfaxleasee is another backer drafted from To Trust an Incubus, and is fast becoming a member of the core team. They are the editor, cheat map maker, tester, and achievement designer for Cannibal Lottery.

Budget

Over $10,000 has already gone into the creation of Cannibal Lottery, and this has been used entirely to pay our artists.  We learned from our last two games that a dedicated artist who will stick with you for the whole game is not cheap.

The $12,000 goal of this Kickstarter will not cover all our expenses, but it will be enough to get this done.  We hope that we can exceed $12,000 to keep us from going too deep in the hole to create this game.

  • Paid already - $10,000
  • Remaining Art - $12,000
  • Programming - $4,000
  • Music Samples For Music Production - $500
  • Editing/Testing - $2,000
  • Marketing - $1,000
  • Kickstarter Fees - $1,200 (Or 10% of whatever we make)

Total - $30,700

Paid Already -$10,000

Total - $20,700

Indiegogo -$1,800 (Hopefully)

Total - $18,900

Kickstarter - $12,000

Total - $6,900

Monthly Contribution $1,000 x 7 Months = $7,000

The monthly contribution is what we're allocating from revenue received from our other two games.

If we fail to receive enough income from our games to pay for Cannibal Lottery the creator will finance things from credit and savings.

Nothing will prevent this game from being completed.  We have a proven track record.  Go to the Risks and Challenges section for more information on that.

Rewards

$10 - Your Name in the Credits & Wallpaper Set. This will be a set of 5 digital desktop wallpapers in 1024x768,  1366x768, and 1920x1080 sizes.

$25 -  Steam Code for Cannibal Lottery. You'll get your name in the credits, the wallpaper set, and the game!

$50 -  Art Book, Original Sound Track, and Cheat Map.  You'll get your name in the credits, the wallpaper set, a Steam key for the game, the digital art book, the original digital sound track, and the digital cheat map!

The art book will not only include game art, but will describe the journey of creating the Cannibal Lottery game.  If you've read the My Magical Demon Lover or To Trust an Incubus art books you know they're incredibly insightful.

The Sound Track may include a voice actor blooper reel if we're able to have voice acting.

The Cheat Map will include a clickable table of contents and describes how to get all the endings, achievements, and how to solve all the puzzles.

$100 - Beta Tester.  You'll get your name in the credits, the wallpaper set, a Steam key for the game, the digital art book, the original digital sound track, the digital cheat map, and you'll be an official beta tester for Cannibal Lottery!

Beta Testers get VIP access to the game as it's being created.  Author Yamila Abraham relies heavily on beta testers to tell her what needs to be changed in order to make the final game as strong as it can possibly be.

It can't be overstated how important beta testers are to the development of the game, however, most testers do not participate in helping mold the game, and simply enjoy early access to playable betas.  They enjoy chapters of the game months before the release date.

In past games, beta testers have had significant influence over plot, characterizations, art, and dialogue. We listen to beta testers and adapt the game based on your input.  To Trust an Incubus delivered four beta versions to testers prior to launch and granted access to a private Google Doc for input.

$250 - Get Eaten.  You'll get your name in the 'Memorial' section of the credits, the wallpaper set, a Steam key for the game, the digital art book, the original digital sound track, the digital cheat map, you'll be an official beta tester for Cannibal Lottery, and a cannibal will attack you in the game.

You're a settler in Lushland Colony minding your own business when suddenly people are running and screaming all around you.

Before you can blink you feel the moist heat of someone's breath hitting the back of your neck.  You turn in horror to see a seven foot cannibal, his gaping maw filled with gleaming razor sharp teeth, right behind you!

His eyes have a maddened glaze that paralyzes you.  In an instant his huge claws grasp your shoulders.  You feel the cannibal's super-human strength in the painful vise-ike grip on your flesh!

There's no escape, no where to run.  You can scarcely choke out a scream before...CHOMP!

You'll be part of a three screen-wide rampage scene filled with other cannibals, victims, and chaos.  Our artist will create a sketch based on your references/instructions.  Get up to two edits (more within reason and at our discretion) to get your likeness just right.

Your fate will most likely be decided by one of the backers who buys an 'Eat Someone' perk, but if none of those sell you'll be able to tell us how you want to die.

Why would you want to get killed in a game?  It's a great way to make a significant contribution to our worthy campaign.  When Cannibal Lottery becomes a franchise you will have the honor of knowing you're immortalized within the debut game.  You can get a great character design along the lines of the kooky characters in Cannibal Lottery.  Besides that, it's just fun and badass.

You'll need to turn in your survey very soon after the Kickstarter ends and be reachable via your Kickstarter email.  (We can't allow anything to cause the game to ship late if there is a problem reaching or working with you.)

We reserve the right to refuse requests that would cause our game's age-rating to go up.  This is a low-gore game, so extreme gore will be subdued and blood will be black. There is no sex or sexual content in Cannibal Lottery.  Feel free to contact us ahead of time to see if what you want will be possible.

$500 - Eat Someone.   You'll get your name in the 'Cannibals' section of the credits, the wallpaper set, a Steam key for the game, the digital art book, the original digital sound track, the digital cheat map, you'll be an official beta tester for Cannibal Lottery, and you'll get to attack someone in the game.

Your stomach is growling.  The pain of your hunger is mind-wrenching.  You know you're on the verge of going berserk.  There's no way to resist it.  You've lost all control and are racing into Lushland Colony to feed!

Cannibals are huge compared to humans, have mouths full of sharp teeth, long sharp claws, and are ten times stronger than a human man.

When hunger makes you insane, humans don't have a chance.  You're fast, you're strong, and you're going to eat someone alive!

Be a cannibal in Cannibal Lottery!  Tell us what you want your cannibal character to look like.  The general design of the cannibal species is already established in the game, but skin color, hair, gender, eyes, and clothes are all up to you.

Tell us how you want to attack/eat someone.  You'll be part of a three screen-wide rampage scene in the game filled with other cannibals, victims, and chaos.  Design your portion of that scene.  Your victim will likely be one of the backers of the 'Get Eaten' perk.

Why would you want to eat someone in a game?  It's a great way to make a significant contribution to our worthy campaign.  When Cannibal Lottery becomes a franchise you will have the honor of knowing you're immortalized within the debut game.  You can put your special touch on a pivotal scene and have the joy of seeing yourself there. Besides that, it's just the sort of crazy thing you're known to do!

$1000  Have a Scene With Masa Murda.  You'll get your name in the 'Masa's Murdarers' section of the credits, the wallpaper set, a Steam key for the game, the digital art book, the original digital sound track, the digital cheat map, you'll be an official beta tester for Cannibal Lottery, and you'll get a scene with Masa Murda in the game.

This extra-special perk lets you be part of the game as yourself.  You'll literally be identified as a Kickstarter backer who contributed to get the scene.

Masa Murda is a comic relief character who speaks directly to the players and breaks all the rules game characters typically have to follow.  Your scene with her might go something like this:

Masa:  Hello my french fries.  You're probably wondering who this bozo is next to me.  Let me introduce _______.  He paid a thousand bucks just get his face here!

Player:  Um, hi.  It's great to be here.

Masa:  So what did you think about that ending, _____?

Player:  That was pretty intense, heh.

Masa:  Riveting.  One thousand dollars well spent, huh people?

Player:  While I'm here I'd like to give a shout-out to my lovely--

Masa:  I'm sorry, that's all the time we have.

You'll get to design your bust to appear next to Masa's bust after an ending.  The bust will be like the hexagonal 'side images' seen in the characters section of this Kickstarter.  You'll get two edits on the sketch for your bust (possibly more within reason and at our discretion).

You can give input on the type of scene you want, or see what the writer comes up for you and then give feedback on what you'd like changed.  We'll accommodate you as much as we're able to give you a scene you'll be happy with while also having something that works in the game.

If the game is voiced, and if you have a quality microphone and good environment to record in, it may be possible for you to voice your character.  We will work with you to see if this will be feasible, but can't guarantee it.

You'll need to turn in your survey very soon after the Kickstarter ends and be reachable via your Kickstarter email.  (We can't allow anything to cause the game to ship late if there is a problem reaching or working with you.)

We reserve the right to refuse requests that would screw up our game, annoy players, disrupts a characterization, or otherwise won't work.  Feel free to contact us ahead of time to see if what you want will be possible.

What Even Is This?

It's a dystopian political visual novel inspired by the famous 1950s short story, To Serve Man, by Damon Knight (turned into an episode of The Twilight Zone and featured on a Simpsons Halloween episode) and the 1948 short story, The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson (with radio, TV, and film adaptions).

The story To Serve Man is pretty famous, but if you're not familiar it's about an alien race that comes to Earth and uses their advanced technology to end all of Earth's problems.  They claim to have benevolent motives and a cryptographer, Patty, thinks this is true when she translates one of their book titles as 'To Serve Man.'

By the end of the story, too late to save a high-ranking government official from boarding an alien ship, Patty delivers the revelation that she translated the rest of 'To Serve Man' and it's a cookbook.  It's 'serve' as in 'serve a meal.'

Shirley Jackson's The Lottery is less notorious, but you might have read it in High School English.

A small New England town holds a ritual where families must draw lots and which ever family draws the black dot goes through two more rounds to decide which of their family members will be sacrificed.  Once it's decided all the towns people stone them to death.

It's never revealed why they're sacrificing someone, but some assume it's a sacrifice to ensure a good harvest or general prosperity.

Mix these two stories together, add some sci-fi, and you have Cannibal Lottery.  It fits with a common theme in a lot of my stories where I write about someone having to make a terrible sacrifice willingly.

In horror you can take this sacrifice theme to some pretty horrific places, like in the Saw movies I'm too squeamish to watch, where someone has to cut off a limb to escape some kind of worse consequence.

I didn't want to make a gory horror game like that.  I wanted it to be more psychological--something that makes you shudder.  I wanted to present a reality that is so inverse that the unthinkable become reasonable.

I wrote a short story prequel version of Cannibal Lottery when a friend running an online queer sci-fi magazine invited me to submit a 3,000 word queer sci-fi story.

The story just flowed out of me in less than an hour, but by then I realized there was nothing queer about it and never submitted.  I shared it with some people and got a lot of positive feedback.

It seemed like the perfect set-up for a highly original dystopian political visual novel.  Unlike the genre ebooks I wrote for many years, visual novels are more open to really off-center ideas.  The niches aren't as tightly established as in, say, romance novels.

This is a concept that's been in my heart for a few years and the story is still 'flowing' as I write it now.  I hope you'll play the demo and help support our effort to make this unique game!

Risks and challenges

Our ideal timeline for the project is here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JHvWc30sCPDZSOJKnt3DeUkMd0Z1pxVyIwg_-jX41Lc/edit…

The reason you should trust us to deliver this game on time is our track record:

My Magical Demon Lover - Promised May 2018 - Delivered May 2018
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/my-magical-demon-lover-bl-yaoi-gay-dating-sim/x/17676670#/

To Trust an Incubus - Promised November 2018 - Delivered November 2018
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/702614894/to-trust-an-incubus-bara-yaoi-bl-gay-dating-sim-vi/
(Full Disclosure: The game was delivered on time, but physical rewards were shipped eight days late. We tried our hardest to avoid this, but made sure backers understood why there was a delay and how the problem was being solved every step of the way.)

We know you've probably backed a lot of projects that end up being a year or more late or are never delivered at all. That's not how Y Press Games operates.

It would take the death of the project lead or some other catastrophe to cause us to fail in our delivery. We put a phenomenal effort in getting to rewards to backers on time, and we don't skimp on quality to meet those deadlines. Our deadline includes time to meet all Stretch Goals.

You will get Cannibal Lottery on or before November 2019. If there is an unavoidable delay it will be short. If there is a long delay someone has died, is dying, or there is a natural or unnatural disaster of a biblical scale. We take our delivery dates very VERY seriously.

    Eat Someone

When the cannibals go on a rampage, you will be one of the monsters who gets to eat/attack someone (likely one of the 'get eaten' backers). You will work with our artist for your cannibal design and tell us how you want to kill/eat your victim. Cannibal Lottery is a low-gore game that focuses more on psychological horror, so blood is black and extreme things, like entrails, will be subdued by the artist. The image you're in is a two panel tableau of the rampage with several other cannibals and humans.

This reward includes one image showing you eating/attacking a human. You will have the opportunity to describe what you want, and get two edits on your final image. We pick the victim, which will be a human, but we will offer choices of who you can eat if possible. Your survey will be due in March, and must be turned in on time.

You'll also get the game, art book, OST, cheat map, be a beta tester, digital wallpaper set, and have your name in the 'Cannibals' section of the credits.
