About

We're building a Museum of Youth Culture for the UK

A new museum to house your stories of youth. Honestly, authentically, without fuss. A museum you can join today. Help us launch our first inaugural exhibition in 2019.

Pop-Up Museum of Youth Culture, Barbican Centre, 2018

Originally formed from the archives of London based club culture and lifestyle magazine Sleazenation, the Museum of Youth Culture has been quietly collecting photographs, clothing and ephemera documenting our rich youth culture movements, scenes, fashions and nightlife over the last 22 years.

The archive brings together over 100,000 precious photographs, slides and objects celebrating the diversity and boldness of youth culture movements in the UK from the birth of the teenager in post-war Britain to the modern Grime scene of East London. It's now time to share this collection with the world.

Since 2015 the Museum of Youth Culture has evolved from a small youth culture photo archive into a fully fledged heritage team of youth culture specialists, working together to reinvent the modern museum for the purpose of preserving, sharing and celebrating youth culture history. The Museum is a response to an increasing public demand for a central go-to hub for the celebration and preservation of British youth culture including music, fashion and social movements.

During these vital development stages, the Museum of Youth Culture has built an impressive network of strategic long term partners including Google Arts & Culture, Mayor of London, Southbank Centre, Barbican, Transport for London, V&A, Tate Britain, Vibration Group, Depop, Dr Martens and Fred Perry.

A World Leading Resource Sharing 100 years of Youth Culture

Museum of Youth Culture Slide Archive
Museum of Youth Culture Slide Archive

The Museum of Youth Culture archive houses the most comprehensive collection of youth and subculture movements in the United Kingdom over the last 100 years, from Psychobillies to UK Garage, all our contributors and collaborators are authentic participants and active spokespersons of their respective scenes.

Already a renowned resource in the academic sector, the Museum of Youth Culture archive maintains long term partnerships with University Degree programmes including Fashion Design, Fashion Promotion and Sociology, providing access, workshops and academic support for students researching youth culture and social history.

Currently housed privately in Printworks London, Europe's biggest nightclub, the Museum of Youth Culture needs your support as a Museum Patron to help make this a public online collection enriched with a leading education and public outreach programme.

Breaking free from archaic institutions as an independent Museum

Our 2018 Carnaby Street Pop-Up, The Subculture Archives
Our 2018 Carnaby Street Pop-Up, The Subculture Archives

We think it's about time a permanent museum is dedicated to the specific needs of youth culture, subculture, and social history without the agenda of big institutions or curatorial bias. That's why we want to open a permanent Museum of Youth Culture free education space including a darkroom and gallery in Summer 2020.

In order to represent youth culture in an honest and accountable way, the Museum of Youth Culture needs to champion an independent spirit. We're experienced building pop-up galleries and shops across the UK (recent examples include The Subculture Archives pop-up gallery & retail concept on London's Carnaby Street) and it's this agility that brings us in good stead towards a permanent, physical Museum of Youth Culture in London.

It's now time to bring this incredible archive of youth expression and social history into the public eye by building an independent digital and physical Museum of Youth Culture for the UK.

A Central London Exhibition & Launch Party this September

Mockup for Central London Exhibition, September 2019

Launching the world's first online Museum of Youth Culture inaugural exhibition this September, we will host a Central London launch party event followed by a week long free exhibition, inviting Londoners and tourists to enter into an immersive pop-up exhibition celebrating the scenes, styles and nightlife of the last 100 years in the UK and we need your support to make this happen.

Alongside iconic youth culture content, the exhibition will pilot the physical Museum of Youth Culture, with a series of interactive activations including VR experiences, live scanning and oral history stations, educational workshops, musical masterclasses and free public talks by youth culture key figures.

The exhibition will incorporate private early access exhibition tours for Kickstarter supporters at patron reward levels and above.

Championing amazing public submissions

Inclusivity is at the heart of the Museum of Youth Culture and we invite everyone to submit a photograph or object representing the spirit of their youth. The result of a new public submission campaign in collaboration with TimeOut magazine, we've received over 1000  new digital and physical submissions from the general public so far in 2019.

Our collections represent over 400 photographers and contributors, and we need your support to increase this number. From a local Bingo hall in Wigan, to a known Teddy Boy pub in Clacton-on-Sea, we need your patronage to send our team across the UK collecting histories at risk.

Building an Education Curriculum to Teach Youth Culture History

Our work with schools and charities with people from disadvantaged backgrounds makes a compelling case for the therapeutic potential of working with youth culture photography and ephemera. Whether it's the history of hip-hop or the emergence of rave culture, we've identified a growing need to incorporate youth culture material into education and arts programmes particularly within those catered to students at risk of exclusion.

We offer free educational workshops and resources for local schools including clothing customisation, music masterclasses and talks with key figures from the subculture community.

It's because of this that we need your help to open a permanent Museum of Youth Culture free education space including a darkroom and gallery by Summer 2020.

"Museum of Youth Culture are a great organisation to be involved with as they provide a closer look into some really exciting photographs and other memorabilia of history, whilst raising great questions of youth culture, context and wider social and political issues. It is a great space to support with curriculum learning, whilst keeping a centred thread of engagement with the roots of identity and community - what really matters!"

Launching the online Museum of Youth Culture

We want to launch a free, chronological digital walkway of youth culture history over the last 100 years, activating our archive into a new online museum experience. The online Museum of Youth Culture will include a submission system and 70,000 digitised youth culture materials backed up by 29 youth movement focussed academic texts written by University of Reading's Subcultures Network, and a free curriculum including worksheets and lesson plans available for schools, colleges and Universities looking to implement youth culture into their offerings.

The online Museum is a vital step towards getting youth culture into schools, and will conserve, build on and further diversify what we already know about youth culture and its contribution to modern society.

Most of all, the Museum of Youth Culture is about celebrating our own stories of individuality, self expression and defiance. We're building a museum that everyone can be part of without elitism, lengthy contracts or paperwork. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to submit your photographs, to tell us your spoken stories and to send us your objects that tell us what it was like growing up in Britain.

It's about the time the UK has a designated and accessible safe haven for the rich cultural movements created by young people over the last 100 years.

We Need Early Museum Patrons to Join Us

Risks and challenges

We are an established cultural sector non-profit with 22 years experience managing private personal collections, representing youth culture history, and building pop-ups.

We have produced all merchandise and rewards in advance and have managed x3 successful Kickstarter campaigns including all fulfilment to supporters.

We are working towards two deadlines, the launch party and education in September 2019 and the launch of the Education Centre in Summer 2023 and we are working hard with venue partners to meet these deadlines.

We don't anticipate any delays or risks to the work we are already doing however if any delays in delivery deadlines or launch event timelines do occur, we will be sure to let backers know at the earliest notice.
