Welcome to the Young Readers Kickstarter page! I started Young Readers in my bedroom while attending college at Oklahoma State in 2012. I was having a tough time in the music program, trying to balance my classes, orchestra, Quidditch practice, and playing shows. My private lessons instructor confronted me about my slipping grades and insisted that I really didn't belong in school. She said I was like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. She expressed that if touring and playing shows is what I really want to be doing than I should go do it. I could always come back and be the old guy in college. The next semester I went to all of my classes on the first day and then spent 2 weeks in my room recording, mixing and packaging my first EP, Family Trees. The day it was released I dropped out of school and went on my first 3 week tour ever, and haven't looked back.
Since then I've done 10 other cross-country tours, played festivals all over the United States and Canada, and released another tour exclusive EP, Big Teeth. I knew the next step was to go for the BIG one, my first full length album.
BREATHING RHYTHM STUDIOS-
It was a no-brainer that I chose to record the new album with Steve Boaz at Breathing Rhythm Studios in Norman, Oklahoma. I knew he would pour his heart and soul into making a record that could take what I was writing to the next level. We spent the last 3 months in the studio building a 10 track album that we could both be proud of and I couldn't be more excited about the results!
$8,000 is a lot of dough. Seriously. I was crushed when I realized how much it was going to cost to record and press an album to vinyl. But Steve is a sweet guy. I already owe him somewhere in the upwards of $4,000 for recording and mixing the album. And instead of breaking my legs (haha) he has put his faith in what we created and is allowing me to pay him after the Kickstarter is over. The remaining $4,000 will go towards mastering, pressing vinyl, packaging CDs and a little touch of PR to help promote the new album to magazines, blogs and radio for its release. With your support we'll be able to unveil this new album together to the whole world!
I will be campaigning across the United States during the entire Kickstarter to help spread the word and raise money. I truly believe in this new album and can't wait until you can hold it in your hands.

I put a lot of thought into all of the donation prizes but I'm really excited to be back on the road with my 600 Spirit and SX-70 Polaroid cameras! Starting from $30 and up, almost all the rewards include a one-of-a-kind Polaroid photo taken from my adventures on tour! I Usually sell them as a part of my merch but I'll be happy knowing that the photos from this tour will be going to great homes, snuggled up next to the new album.
Risks and challenges
THE $10,000 GOAL-
I'll probably break out into a dance in the middle of a coffeeshop when the project reaches $8,000 but I thought I could help give back a little more if we reach $10,000. If over funded, I'll have enough extra money to re-release and press a 7" vinyl of my 2013 single/B-side, Homesick//Hymnal. It's been two long years since its original release and is well overdue to be put on wax. Everyone who donates to the Kickstarter (at any level) will automatically receive a FREE digital download of the single/B-side once we hit the $10,000 goal just for being so supportive!
You can stream the songs here: https://soundcloud.com/youngreaders/sets/homesick-hymnal
And if you're living pizza to pizza, (like I will be) and can't afford to donate, then it would be equally generous of you to share the video, the Kickstarter page or even a link to the music. Who knows, maybe your uncle Charlie will like what he hears and donate enough for me to record him an acoustic EP of Slayer songs.
I really can't wait to see where this new album takes me and hope everyone has a fun time following the project! I will be keeping up with it daily from my Instagram and Twitter and hopefully won't lose all of my hair before the tour is over!
With love and gratitude,
