Who we are
Hey, everybody: We are The Young@Heart Chorus, that rock group made up of 30 senior citizens from 75 to 90 years old. We're best known for our movie Young@Heart, and you might have seen us on CNN this spring. Unwilling to be shut away in nursing homes, we've been touring the world since 1982 performing at sold out concerts, singing our unexpected interpretations of popular music and revolutionizing what it means to get old. Some of our hits include our unique versions of Coldplay's "Fix You", Bob Dylan's "Forever Young," and James Brown's "I Feel Good." We’ve collaborated with everyone from Cambodian folk musicians to Puerto Rican break dancers, from David Byrne to the Chicago Children's Choir, from prison inmates to Ellen DeGeneres.
What we’re doing
Now we are here to collaborate with YOU on the most exciting project we’ve ever done: our next album, tentatively scheduled for release in May 2020 if this Kickstarter campaign succeeds! This new album will be our first album since 2012, and our first live album since 2008. It will include the best versions and performances of the best songs from our most recent concerts. We've recorded the last 7 concerts specifically for this purpose. Soon, we'll be going through and listening to all the different takes to home in on the greatest moments and musical highlights from these shows, before mixing and mastering them for the final album.
About half the album's songs will be from our new show "Woodstock: The Performance Peace" - our unique perspective on four days in the mud. In 1969, we were raising families and attending cocktail parties. 50 years later, we’re turning on the music we begged our kids to turn off. Taken from songs on the Woodstock album, we reinterpret Joe Cocker, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Richie Havens, Sly and the Family Stone and many more in our own signature style. Now the songs of the younger generation are the songs for all generations, with a new and urgent meaning.
The rest of the songs are from "Welcome to Your Life" - our current musical theater work with a circus theme, using the hallmark Young@Heart mix of contemporary music that is delightfully unexpected from a chorus of elders. In a world that can often seem out of balance and surreal, the circus with its elements of ring master, tight-rope, vaudeville, carnival barkers, smoke and mirrors serves as a metaphor for the global stage. Young@Heart’s older performers are conscience guides in the struggle to discover universal truths. In this show, we sing songs from Radiohead to the Psychedelic Furs, and the Talking Heads to Sam Cooke that explore our fragile and mysterious existence and ultimately suggest the potential for positive outcomes.
What’s the Kickstarter funding for?
We really need your help to make this album happen! We're asking you, our loyal fans, to pledge your support today and help us raise the money to fund this project – and show the world that it’s possible to grow old without growing boring.
We’re crowdfunding it to help pay for recording, mixing, marketing, and everything else. Since we're old, we need a lot more rehearsal time to learn all the lyrics to our songs and be ready to perform them. Your support will help us pay for our all-star 7-piece band, help us record our live concerts, and then curate all the music we’ve recorded so we can mix the best songs from the bunch; and will help us design, package, market, and distribute the album. The whole thing. We literally cannot do it without you.
What happens if we raise more than our goal?
This budget covers making the album only. Every dollar we raise over our $25,000 goal will be used for such things as paying for a video production team to film the concerts and edit music videos for several songs, so you can see quality concert footage of the performances on the album. It'll also pay for promoting the album once it's released, as we want this album to reach as many people as possible!
Your donation is tax deductible because we're a 501(c)(3) non-profit. We hope you'll donate to this project and share this link with your friends and family so we may continue this magical, musical adventure.

Risks and challenges
It’s a lot more intensive to record an album with a group of elderly singers. It takes more rehearsal and a lot of help and effort to pull off live concerts. We make this all happen with the support of our community. We’ve successfully raised funds for two previous albums through Kickstarter, and we believe our incredible fans will see us through it again this time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
