"YOU FOLLOW" is a documentary about a young woman––adopted from India, raised in California––and her quest back to India to find her birth mother.
Hello friends! My name is Nisha Grayson and I am that woman.
In 2009, a small trip to the "Motherland" with four friends became a spontaneous mission to find out the truth of my adoption.
The people were helpful and we found clues along the way: The village where my birth mother was from. The hospital I was born in. But no birth mother. After two months in India, our group finally went home.
Early last year I got a call from Tony, a helpful man that we met on our journey. Apparently he has a hot lead––someone with ties to my birth mother.
Is it true? Could it really be her? There's only one way to find out.
We've decided to go back to India to find my birth mother and complete the film.
Many adoptees never create the opportunity to reconnect with either of their birth parents. They may have the desire and not be able to find the courage, or maybe they've actively searched and came up with nothing. I may have an opportunity to sit down with the woman that gave birth to me, in a country where I was born but never lived. I must go.
YOU FOLLOW: A Search for One's Past is a film about courage and connection.
We don't often listen to that little voice that urges us to break free of our limitations and do the things that really excite us. I want this film to encourage people to follow their hearts and open up to embarking on their own personal adventure.
For too long I've wondered about what happened in those first six months of my life. I'm using this documentary as a tool to show others that they don't have to sit and wonder helplessly––they can actively change their lives.
I want to inspire the world, but I need help to do it.
We need $15,000 to complete the journey to India and to finish the film.
Kickstarter is the online example of what we've experienced on our journey so far: strangers coming together to help someone in need. We think that there is no better place for us to gather the support of the online community than right here.
But with Kickstarter, it's all or nothing. We either raise the $15,000 or we get nothing at all. So we appeal to you for your donations.
- Airfare to India
- Room and board once in Goa
- Help with the post-production of the film
- Marketing and distribution
- Entry fees for the festival circuit!
All of these can be completed within our $15,000 budget.
In return for your generous donations, we have many creative rewards to offer: from follows on Twitter and Facebook, to custom artwork (see Dawn Chenette's poster and Nisha G's custom painted TOMS below), to gifts from India––even a lunch date with any member of our production team! (See the right sidebar for more.)
So if this project appeals to any corner of your heart, please donate today. And remember, we're not just asking you to support the production of a film, we're asking you to help close one chapter of a person's life.
