UPDATE: We hit our $2,000 goal earlier today. We are so blown away and so thankful for your support. Others have expressed interest in still giving to this campaign, and some videographers have reached out to add a video component to this trip. We are excited about the opportunity to share our story in more ways! Any extra money raised above our goal will be used for that purpose. Thanks again! - Yonathan
ABC57 from South Bend, Indiana shared an article about our journey.
The first week of March, my brother Jordan and I will embark on a 9-day photographic journey along the U.S & Mexico border. This journey is close to 2,000 miles and will take us through the southern border states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona & California. We want to document and share our experience with you, one mile at a time.
I have been extremely challenged by the lack of dialogue lately. There's been so much talk about “the wall” and President Trump signing the executive order to start planning its construction. Many people have strong opinions about it one way or the other. However, we've realized that a lot of the people we interact with have never traveled there or know anyone who grew up in this region of the country. Even still, the border is a very hot topic in many conversations.
The purpose of this project is to gain and share a fuller perspective on what the border is really like. We have no agenda - only to document life on the border and learn by listening to the perspectives of the people who live there. As we take part in different dialogues, we want to have a fuller understanding of a place that we call home and share this knowledge with others.
My brother Jordan and I grew up on the border. Our parents still live there, and two of our siblings are in high school in South Texas. Who we are today is largely shaped by growing up in this region of the U.S. Even though we grew up there, we don't know everything about the border; as much as we want to share about the border with others, we also want to learn more for ourselves.
I'm currently a regional coordinator to Latin America for Experience Mission and reside in Minneapolis, Minnesota with my beautiful wife, Megan. You can see more of my photography on my personal Instagram.
My brother Jordan, is a currently living in South Bend, Indiana and works for Habitat for Humanity in the northern Indiana area. He's currently single and looking for the love of his life. You can follow more of Jordan's photography on Instagram.
We will document the southern border and share people’s stories and perspectives through photography. We will be photographing as much of the existing fence as legally possible. For each mile of fence, which is about 650 miles, our goal is to take 650 photos that document the people, culture, places, and history of the border. Our journey will be shared through our personal social media accounts and our "Border Perspective" Instagram page.
Our hope is to provide those who haven’t traveled to the border a glimpse of the existing fence structure, to share stories and perspectives of the people who live there, and to build relationships with those we meet.
Where will your money go?
- Car Rental (majority of the budget)
- Additional photography gear
Ideally, we will find host families to stay with along the way, but will stay in Airbnb's/motels when necessary. The remainder of the money will go towards everything that happens after our journey, including post processing, prints, books, postcards and continuing efforts of sharing stories from the border.
Help us spread the word!
Risks and challenges
Finding new perspectives is hard. Dialoguing with others who are different than you is hard. This is exactly why this project is worth doing. We do not expect this journey to be easy; there may be unexpected challenges along the way, and we may face even greater challenges when we return home and seek to share our story. This is why we know we cannot do it alone - we need your support. We need people who are willing to back us, stand alongside us, and help us promote the value of listening to others and gaining deeper insights on what is currently unknown. We hope that you will join us on this journey.
