About this project
One year ago we released our first bicycle pannier, saddle bag or bike bag. We were striving for a design that had the same aesthetic and durability as our other messenger bags and backpacks - but instead offered the benefits of being a rack mounted bag. So, with the knowledge we’ve gained in 5 years of making tough gear, we studied our other tried and true bags, and came up with the Pan-Yay! A solid design that's highly functional, yet simple in style.
The pan-yay is an expanding roll-top bag, designed to suit various sized loads. The floating separated liner improves water resistance, with no shared seams at the base of the bag. You can put dirty clothes or tools between the layers, protecting the contents of your bag. Reflective accents helps you stay visible at night. Also, the high density polyethylene backplate gives the bag a solid structure. When you reach your destination, quickly attach the adjustable shoulder strap, and bring your bag with you on foot.
Over the past year we’ve been testing and tweaking this bicycle bag, trying to make it the best bike pannier one on the market. And we think we’ve come close, but during that process we did realize that something was lacking. While the bicycle bag itself works great, the initial mounting hardware we’d been using is limiting and doesn’t work with every bike rack. We love the diversity of our bicycle riders, so it’s important to us that the bike pannier works on as many bicycle racks as possible, easily attaching and detaching from any bike rack.
Our new adjustable bracket hardware, works with bicycle racks as thick as 16mm or ⅝” of an inch. You can easily slide the clamps side to side to get around any obstacle on your bike rack. This hardware quickly mounts and dismounts to and from your bicycle rack, keeping you on the go, both on and off your bike.
We loved this new bicycle pannier hardware so much that we decided to expand our pannier / bike bag line, adding functionally to other existing designs and introducing some new ones altogether.
Looking for a great day bag or tote? Check out the Kassi! A versatile tote that’s great on or off your bike. Using the same easily adjustable hardware, The Kassi quickly attaches to your bike. Tuck the straps away when you ride your bicycle, or hide the hardware away for off bike use.
Heading to work? Check out the Annex! Now bike rack mounted, this laptop bag has an built-in padded sleeve for your laptop, and two extra pockets for cords and chargers. A zippered details pocket keeps your small gear secure. While it’s flap closure with two adjustable compression pulls allows this bicycle / laptop bag to suit various sized loads. The hardware also hides away for off bike use.
Don’t want the look of a traditional pannier? Check out the Portage. A bicycle bag with a clean aesthetic, and increased carrying capacity. Just like the Annex, The Portage shares an adjustable flap closure, internal zippered pocket and the ability to hide your bicycle rack hardware away for off bike use.
Designing a bicycle bags can be a long process. It starts with a sketch. Next we design a pattern on the computer, and transfer it to paper with a plotter. Then we're ready to make a prototype. From there we go back to the pattern as many times as needed to make the perfect prototype bike bag. This can involve changing hardware, dimensions, features and aesthetics. We ride our bikes with each and every bag time and time again. Seeing how the bike bag works on the bicycle, rides on the bicycles rack, fits with different bicycle racks, feels on the bike when you are riding it. We fill the pannier and different bicycle bags with all kings of different gear and loads to see how they handle our urban commute. The Pan Yay! bicycle pannier bag for example has been in development for at least 2 years. Prototypes of this bag have been on a ride from New York to Texas and back. They are proven tough and are even tougher to beat.
All of our bike bags are made by hand at our studio in Toronto, Canada, using top of the line fabrics milled right here in North America. Each bicycle bag has an outer layer of 1000 denier CORDURA® - a heavy duty nylon with a water resistant backing. Next they are lined with 400 denier Diamond Ripstop Nylon, with a urethane coated backing. Here at YNOT, we value quality, craftsmanship and transparency. By keeping our manufacturing in-house and local, we can guarantee those things. We see each and every bicycle bag from start to finish, from the materials we source to the very final stitches. We have such faith in our bike bags, that they leave our studio with a Lifetime warranty.
Looking for some extra features? Transform your bike bag from touring the countryside to being part of every urban commute to work, by securing your essentials.

Gallant Bicycles is YNOT Cycle's sister company. We designed these bikes and do all the painting (powder coating) and assembly in the same facility where we make all the YNOT Cycle products. Every bike is made to order, so you can design it to suit your personal taste.
Risks and challenges
We already have access to most of the materials used in these products, and we have experience scaling our production quickly. Our last Kickstarter was delivered 100% on-time. On this project, we rely on an outside company to manufacture our new pannier mounting hardware. There could be unexpected delays in production or shipping. However, the tooling is ready and fully tested so such delays are expected to be minimal.
We will communicate with our backers in the event of any unexpected delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
