About this project
What The Gaming Community Is Saying About Brrrainz:
Brrrainz is a 2D action zombie game with a twist. Set in the 60s and 70s Brrrainz takes the classic zombie genre and looks at it from a new perspective. Brrrainz is the story of the shambling dead, not the rugged survivor. Lead your undead army on a campaign to bring misery and destruction to small towns and cities alike. Every enemy you defeat has a chance to be turned into an undead ally. The larger your horde, the more havoc you can wreak.
- A Zombie Game From The Zombie’s Perspective: Finally a game that focuses on the real hero of the genre: the zombie!
- The Needs Of The Many: Gameplay that focuses on your horde rather than the just the individual zombie. Tear through levels as a group or give zombies commands to take down your enemies.
- You Guys Are Just Freaks!: Collect Freaks—zombies with special attacks that give your horde new ways to fight.
- Even The Undead Can Evolve: Collect DNA points along your journey and upgrade your undead army.
- This Game Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us: 10 unique and challenging bosses inspired by famous zombie hunters and pop culture icons.
- Oh The Good Old Days: Featuring quirky art style and setting loosely inspired by the 60s and 70s.
Brrrainz features action gameplay mixed with strategy. You get to control a horde of zombies tearing through levels causing as much destruction as possible. Your zombies can charge at your enemies head on or be given individual orders for more tactical approach.
Combat challenges in Brrrainz forces you to approach enemies who are dug in to defensive positions more strategically. Since enemies can take out zombies fairly easily, brute force attack rarely works in your favor. You must use your zombies and Freaks wisely.
Environmental challenges have you exploring the levels triggering special events. Large barricades force you to gather as many zombies as you can before moving forward. Switches and pressure plates can only be accessed with certain Freaks or by leaving some of your zombies behind. Meanwhile puzzles require you to retrieve special items hidden on the map and bring them back.
After defeating an enemy, your zombies will begin to consume them. Being on guard and defending your undead army while they are feeding is top priority. If zombies go too long without eating, they will start to lag behind your horde and eventually die.
Sometimes pure destruction is not enough for you to defeat your enemies. Once the humans have caught on to the fact that there is a zombie horde coming their way, they will reinforce their defenses and you will have no choice but to get craftier with your tactics.
While devouring the dead, your zombies gain DNA Points which can be used to "devolve." At the start of the game, zombies are weak and slow. As you collect DNA points, you will be able to upgrade the speed, damage, health, and number of zombies you can hold in your horde. Each Freak has their own upgrade path that make them more devastating as well.
Brrrainz takes place in a world loosely based on the Middle America 60s and 70s. The game starts with a zombie waking up in dark woods. Shortly after being turned, he goes out to search for his lost wife. Finding her wandering aimlessly, he is pleased to see that she is also undead. They join forces and begin to tear up the farm lands meeting other undead friends along the way and turning the fearful—and some ferocious—humans into zombies.
Starting in the quiet woods of America, lead your horde through sleepy small towns, rustic country sides, and industrial locations. Then lay waste to the glamorous Possum City. Visit iconic locations like Pinfest, a large music festival featuring some of the greatest artists of Rock ‘n’ Roll. And why not take a trip to Cape Caravel and witness the historical moon launch?
Brrrainz features many unique locations spanning from small hamlets to large metropolises. Each location has its own cast of colorful characters and unique objectives. Cause mindless destruction then use your zombies to sabotage human defenses. Some locations even have powerful bosses who are determined to end your rampage!
The basic enemies in Brrrainz include anyone from simple farmers to business men, hippies, and hardened soldiers. Some enemies run in fear at the sight of your horde, while others will chase your zombies down with blind rage. As you defeat your human foes, they may rise as the undead to fight alongside you.
Freaks are zombies who in previous life were so strong that they have carried their skills to the afterlife. This gives them special powers that you can use to your advantage. Although very powerful, Freaks are rare and should be used sparingly.
Freaks can leap, explode, slice, and smash their way through many challenges that regular zombies cannot. Finding them along your journey will give your horde the edge it needs to succeed.
The Glutton is a former fry cook who would stuff his face when the boss wasn't looking. When he turned into a zombie, he had a belly full of fried foods which he uses as a weapon for his attacks. The Glutton can vomit in a long line in front of him slowing down enemies while increasing zombie movement speed.
The Jester is a former circus clown who was fired due to his excessive freakiness. His costume, scary makeup, and creepy smile scared off children and adults alike. Needles to say, his performance was not the most popular at the circus. It's safe to say that The Jester has finally found himself as a zombie striking fear with all who see him and with a finishing act that is literally an explosive...KABOOM!
The bosses in Brrrainz were inspired by famous zombie movie hunters and heroes. Each boss has their own unique way of killing zombies that you must avoid in order to defeat them.
The Exterminator is a secret government project being tested at Camp Lagarto. He is a truly sinister soldier with an unhealthy obsession with fire. The Exterminator uses his back mounted flame-thrower to set your zombies ablaze. If not dealt with, the fire will spread to the rest of your horde!
The Sheriff is an uptight one to say the least. No nonsense, straight shooting, and a pain in the carcass. Bored with the lack of events in his small town, it will take a zombie outbreak to put on his sheriff hat, rally the town folks, and fire his set of magnums while yelling, "This town ain't big enough for all of us!"
As if the crafty humans and their assortment of weapons, bombs, and barricades were not enough to deal with, your horde has to deal with special enemy types. These enemies support their own kind and generally make your life–or rather living dead–miserable.
The Medic is a doctor who lost his license because of the pile of malpractice cases against him. Everyone laughed when he said he came up with a miracle cure for all that ails you. See who's laughing now! The Medic will heal allies who are fighting you. His miracle cure seems to have a strange effect on zombies that can potentially turn them back to humans. Failing to take out The Medic will only prolong your fight for survival.
Brrrainz is coming along nicely, but we want to make it even bigger and better! Your gracious support will help us create more human characters and their zombie counterparts, 3 new Freaks, Stronghold levels with completely new level assets, new and improved power ups for your horde, and even zombie bosses to fight (because some brrrainz just can’t get along)! If we exceed our main goal of $30,000 planned to finalize the game, we will be able to work on a Survival Mode once we reach our $50,000 stretch goal, and develop a Multiplayer Mode at $95,000. You can refer to our stretch goals pyramid and their description below:
$5,000 – More human characters and their zombie counterparts:
Reaching our $5,000 goal will allow us to create more human characters and their zombie counterparts. You’ll find them all over the game and be able to add them to your horde when they turn brrrain-crazy!
$10,000 – 3 new spectacular Freaks for that competitive edge:
Having Freaks in your horde adds competitive advantage over your enemies. Having even more different Freaks gives you competitive edge. At $10,000, we’ll get right to it and create 3 more badass Freaks to join your army of the undead and cause unimaginable mayhem to your foes!
$15,000 – Dungeons and Brrrainz aka Stronghold levels with completely new assets:
Meeting our $15,000 mark will help us develop Stronghold levels with completely new assets. Strongholds are our versions of dungeons in Brrrainz. Lead your undead army inside and take down heavily fortified settings inspired by iconic locations in our favorite zombie movies and shows. Explore new levels like the Oakwood Shopping Mall, Graybar Prison, and Cape Caravel R&D Lab.
$20,000 – Power ups to make your zombies bigger, better, faster, stronger:
Attaining our $20,000 goal will allow us to implement Zombie Power Ups. Power Ups are items that make the individual zombies who hold them more powerful. Give your zombies hardhats to increase their health or Caffeine pills so they can close the gap on your foes.
$30,000 – Bosses as undead friendly fiendish:
As we meet our main goal at $30,000, we will finalize the game, but not only! After defeating a boss in Brrrainz, you’ll be able to summon their zombie form to fight for you in tough spots. Zombie bosses will use their special attacks to wreak havoc on their former allies. Turn some of your worst enemies into your strongest allies!
$50,000 – Survival mode with 8 Arenas with upgrades and achievements:
At $50,000, $20,000 above our funding goal, we will add a new game mode: Survival. Fight waves of enemies in large arenas based on the different locations in Brrrainz. Explore the arenas for any wandering civilians or hidden Freaks to give your horde a better fighting chance.
$70,000 – Run, Brrrainz, run on Mobile:
Lay waste to the countryside and large cities anywhere anytime with the Brrrainz On The Go! for your smartphone. At $70,000, $40,000 above our funding goal, will help us to make a mobile port of Brrrainz for IOS and Android.
$95,000 – Multiplayer mode!!!

We've been trying to fund Brrrainz ourselves since 2015. But games are a long and expensive endeavor. Most of us have quit our full time jobs to work on Brrrainz, since we believe so much in it and we’d like nothing more than to see our quirky zombie game come to life, or rather undead, and to share it with you. But we can’t do it without your help. So we turn to you, Kickstarter Community, as we hope to communicate directly with you and benefit from your support and guidance.
Other than covering the pledge rewards and Kickstarter fees, we fully commit ourselves to working on Brrrainz which includes improving and finishing it, paying our contractors for their services related to the game, and licensing the software. The following is a breakdown of our budget:
Risks and challenges
We’ve been working on Brrrainz for over a year now. We’ve even quit our jobs to focus on the game full-time. We’re very passionate about Brrrainz, love working on it, and can’t wait to see it come alive (or undead) before our eyes and yours. That said, it’s not a simple endeavor to program, design levels, test the sound, create concept art, outsource work where need be, do quality assurance testing, and market and promote our project as we are after all a small indie game company. Delays would be our biggest risk to overcome. In spite of that, it’s safe to say that we’re heavily invested in our game and will make sure to prevent any issues from happening or deal with them head on so that Brrrainz will be finished on time and delivered to you as soon as it is ready. Our project manager has already previously delivered over 25 independent projects successfully, and we’re confident that Brrrainz is no exception.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
