About this project
UPDATE: We've made our target! But please, keep on pledgin'! Our stretch goal is 60k and that extra 10k will allow us to pay for more essential elements, like film festival submissions, outreach programs and super fly animations, which will really give this film the magic it needs. There's still lots of sweet rewards up for grabs and the more funds raised the shinier AMOT will get. So pledge happy :)
Imagine finding out your mother has 2-3 years left to live. Kathryn Calder of The New Pornographers was faced with this gut-wrenching revelation when she learned that her mother had been diagnosed with ALS, taking her down a path few could endure.
ALS (commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease in the US and Motor Neurone disease in the UK) is a fatal disease, which attacks the neurons in the brain and spinal cord, progressively impairing one's ability to walk, talk, breathe or swallow. The cause of the disease is unknown and there is no cure.
Before the bad news hit, Kathryn was relishing in a beautiful adventure. A few years prior, her mother, who was adopted, had found her birth mother, and thus a whole other family for Kathryn. Relatives emerged, loved ones multiplied overnight. And all the more spectacular, her new found long lost uncle, Carl Newman, happened to be the front-man behind an indie rock super group called The New Pornographers. With this serendipitous revelation, a new realm of musical collaboration and opportunity spawned and prospered. Then the news about her mother's illness crashed right through the newly lit family home.
As a result, Kathryn decided to move back into her childhood home to become her mother's full time caregiver. It was during this turbulent period, that Kathryn became inspired to write and record her first solo album; a parting gift for her biggest fan. She recruited a producer and converted her mother's living room into a recording studio. As her mother's condition steadily worsened, Kathryn's challenge became clear: she needed to complete the album in time for her mother to hear it.
A Matter of Time illustrates the bravery and compassion that can bloom from struggle. How even the most enduring battles can conjure unimaginable feats of strength and triumph against unexplainable forces. This is an inspirational story about courage in the face of disease. It’s about letting difficult experiences meet artistic impulses and making a positive difference through music.
ARE WE THERE YET? ALMOST...
In May of last year we travelled to Victoria, Vancouver, Chicago, New York, Woodstock, and Baltimore to interview authors, doctors and musicians, in order to collect footage and insights into Kathryn’s journey. A few months later, on July 4th (Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day), we threw a benefit concert in Kathryn's hometown of Victoria, BC. Filmed with seven cameras in the Old Town exhibit of the Royal BC museum, guests from The New Pornographers and Kathryn's previous band, Immaculate Machine, came together for an intimate gathering. The music from this concert serves as the musical backdrop for the film.

Now we’re in the in rousing post-production period and our mission hats are on to bundle this up into a sparkling coherent package. This is where those little bursts of magic happen. The inclusions where you go, ‘Oh DAY-um!’, nice going guys.
We've already spent a month together editing in Montreal, working 12 hour days, sifting through footage and putting together the puzzle pieces of this great story. But now unfortunately, we've run out of funding. Without any financial backing, we've gone as far as we can go. The piggy bank is empty and we need your help.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
We've completed filming and we've assembled a rough cut. But before we can show it to you, we need to complete it. It needs sound, colour, motion graphics, animation, and a final edit. The money which is raised from this Kickstarter campaign will go directly towards paying for the following expenses (without which the film cannot be completed!):
- Sound editor
- Hard drives
- Legal fees
- Accounting fees
- Licensing fees (for archival footage & photographs)
So you see, there are a lot of players; a lot of stars on the map to completion. The story is there, the scenes have been shot; we just have to polish it, put a ribbon around it and fling it from the rooftops.

Brent Hodge (Director, Editor):
Brent has directed and produced two full length music documentaries for CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) - “Winning America” (Said The Whale documentary) and “What Happens Next” (Dan Mangan documentary). Both documentaries were Leo nominated and aired nationally across Canada. Brent has also worked with OWN, Slice, National Geographic, National Film Board of Canada, Discovery Canada, and OLN Network.
Yellow Bird Project (Producers):
Casey Cohen and Matthew Stotland, co-founders of the Yellow Bird Project (YBP), have been the driving force behind this documentary. Since 2006, YBP has collaborated with over 40 indie rock bands, soliciting t-shirt designs from bands like Andrew Bird, Bloc Party, Bon Iver, The National, The Shins, Broken Social Scene, Of Montreal and more. In 2008, Kathryn designed a t-shirt on behalf of The New Pornographers and Immaculate Machine to benefit the ALS Society of BC. After subsequently learning about Kathryn's remarkable journey, Casey and Matt were inspired to create this documentary and determined to see it through from concept to completion.

Jonas Prupas is our Executive Producer, acting on behalf of Muse Entertainment, a film and TV production company that is recognized across North America and internationally as a major producer of well-crafted, high-quality film and television productions with strong international appeal. Many of their television productions (The Kennedys, Bomb Girls, Being Human) have garnered critical acclaim and large audiences – as well over 100 international awards and over 300 award nominations.
Chris Kelly (Sound Recordist, Associate Producer):
Chris Kelly is a producer and musician. He is currently the producer for CBC Radio One's satirical radio show This Is That with Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring. He started working with the CBC in 2006, producing Grant Lawrence's daily radio show and the CBC Radio 3 Podcast. He recently released his debut solo album, which was produced by Kurt Dahle of The New Pornographers.
Josh Huculiak (Director of Photography):
Josh Huculiak is a founding member of the Vancouver, BC based Production Company, 'The Amazing Factory', which has produced beautiful work spanning from music videos to high profile corporate projects and documentaries. Within the last year, they produced over 20 music videos for bands including Hey Ocean!, Yukon Blonde, Young Liars, We Are The City, and Juno Award winning band, Said The Whale. Between music videos, Amazing Factory has taken on a video series for Destination New South Wales (Tourism Australia) and a large scale Canadian government video project called "Carbon Neutral Life" as well as producing a feature length film shot in Norway this past year.
John Diemer (Sound Designer):
John is an award winning Location Sound Mixer, Sound Designer, and Owner/Operator of The Farmhouse Creative Labs in Toronto. Having the skills to oversee projects all the way from production to post gives John a unique and creative edge on all of the projects he is a part of. Some of his recent credits include Top Chef (Food Network), The Amazing Race (CTV), and Vikings (History).
Alec Mathewson (Editor):
Alec Mathewson is a freelance editor from Montreal with over 12 years experience making documentary films. His work has screened at various festivals and aired on networks around the world including the CBC, Discovery Health, History Channel, IFC, Syfy, and the Documentary Channel. Alec also works behind the camera and when time permits he is experimenting with video as a medium for sculptures and art installations. His curiosity and passion for telling stories no matter what the platform is, and his experience at all levels of production, has helped him secure lasting relationships with the writers, directors, and other film-makers he works with.
WHAT IS ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rapidly progressive neuromuscular disease that destroys the motor neurons in your brain and spinal cord. When those motor neurons die, the brain's ability to initiate and control muscle movement is lost.
In simple language?
Imagine this. One day, out of the blue, you feel a slight muscle weakness or cramping in your foot or hand. It could be numbness in your big toe, or maybe you find yourself having trouble buttoning your shirt. The initial symptoms can be so slight, that they are often overlooked.
The muscle weakness then spreads slowly and steadily across both arms, legs, invariably leading to total paralysis of the limbs. Eventually the disease will rob you of your ability to speak, breath, and swallow. Your mind stays intact, while you lose complete control of your body and there's nothing you can do to arrest its progression. No prescription, no cure.
ALS can strike anyone at any time regardless of age, sex or ethnic background. The disease is inevitably fatal, with most people dying from respiratory failure, usually within two to three years from the onset of symptoms.
We travelled across North America to interview some of the world's leading experts in the field of ALS. The following doctors were kind enough to volunteer their time in support of this film:
Dr. Neil Cashman - At the University of British Columbia, Cashman holds the Canada Research Chair in Neurodegeneration and Protein Misfolding Diseases and serves as the Director of the UBC ALS Center.
Dr. Charles Krieger - Krieger is an Associate Professor of Kinesiology at Simon Fraser University, Professor of Neurology at the University of British Columbia and a clinician at the ALS Center in the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre.
Dr. Jeffrey Rothstein - As a Professor of Neurology at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Rothstein focuses on neuromuscular diseases, with a particular focus on ALS. He is the Director of the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research and his laboratory includes more than 20 post-doctoral fellows and ALS clinic staff.
Risks and challenges
You see up there our funding goal is 50k, because our absolute need in life right now is to complete this film for distribution. Without this campaign, we risk non-completion of the film, which is every artist's and producer's worst nightmare and we’d cry hardcore if that happened. This is the base level of success for this feature and we think it's an absolutely doable feat.
But wait, there's more...
To really give this project the kicker it needs for festival submissions and travel fees, we really need to hit the 70k mark.
Furthermore and fairy godmother providing, to fully blow the pants off this project to the most ultimate of levels, in terms of marketing the film, developing a website, investing in a PR strategy and pretty much going the full caboose with every bell and shining whistle, we’re looking at the 100k mark.
So the biggest risk for us is not being able to raise enough funding to give the project the full attention that it deserves.
In the most deepest pits of our guts, we believe the story, the people involved so far and our plans for this magnum opus, deserve as much attention as we can muster.
