Each YARRA 3DX comes with a powerful subwoofer to support bass frequencies present in movies soundtracks, high fidelity music, games, and VR experiences. The wired YARRA 3DX subwoofer has a 5.25" driver and 30 Watt amplifier that outputs deep bass from 50 - 100 Hz. The subwoofer connects to the main YARRA 3DX speaker array using a mono 3.5 mm jack.

EVERYONE NEEDS PERSONALIZED SOUND
Each of us hears the world around us in a unique way because no two pairs of ears are identical. The outer ear — the pinna — filters the sounds reaching our ear drums. An HRTF or Head Related Transfer Function is a "sonic fingerprint" or "ear print". They are based on:
- The exact location of your head in the space
- The size and shape of your head
- The dimensions and convolutions of your ears
- The rotation of your head
HEADPHONES PUT THE SOUND INSIDE YOUR HEAD
Headphone audio suffers from crosstalk isolation and low quality stereo placement in space. Both of our ears are needed to localize individual sounds. Headphones deliver left or right channels exclusively to our ears minimizing the sense of space. As a result, headphone listeners get:
- An "inside your head", dimensionless experience
- Lack of spatial detail and situational awareness
- Reduction in sound stage and low level details
- Loss of fidelity and resolution
Additionally, headphones don't track your movements. When you rotate your head to the left or right the spatial information in the program doesn't respond appropriately. It moves with you so that sounds "locked" in a 3D location move — this aspect destroys all sense of reality.
SELECTABLE HRTF SETTINGS AND SOUND FIELD MODELING MAXIMIZE PERSONAL LISTENING
YARRA 3DX uses your location and preset HRTF filter setting to adjust the left and right sound beams to model actual localized audio events. The result is unlike anything you've ever experienced before. It's a revolutionary, cutting edge, technological advance that has moved the audio world past the limitations of headphones and multiple speaker setups.
HOW IT WORKS
There are only three ways that listeners can experience reproductions of real life, immersive, 3D audio experiences.
The first requires a large number of speakers positioned strategically around a room. For example, the SpatLab at UC San Diego has 24 identical speakers mounted on the ceiling and walls. Theater and consumer systems also have multiple speakers to provide "surround" sound. We're all familiar with 5.1, 7.1, but the numbers go even higher with 11.2, Dolby Atmos, and Auro 3D setups. Bascialy, speakers are used as point sources to reproduce locations.
Headphones playing binaurally-recorded content can also be used to reproduce 3D audio. Source recordings are captured using special binaural heads — physical human-sized headed with two microphones positioned behind each rubber ear. When the two isolated channels of audio recorded through the "dummy" head are played back through headphones to your ears, you experience a very convincing recreation of the original event.
The third method uses crosstalk cancellation methods to focus narrow beams of discrete sound to your left and right ears WITHOUT headphones or multiple arrays of speakers. This is called beamforming. When you realize that everything we hear — including all directional information — is the result of our two ears and the processing that goes on in our brains. Any system that can recreate what our ears and brain require for immersive, 3D audio will suffice.
The real question is which methods is the most convincing, cost effective, and easiest to use? Multiple speakers can be convincing but are expensive and impractical except at the local multiplex. Most headphones don't account for head movements and can be uncomfortable. They also isolate individual listeners from one another. Beamforming can be expensive (there are systems that cost over $50,000!), require custom measurements, and are bulky. YARRA 3DX is inexpensive, very effective in producing convincing sound fields, and simple to setup and operate.
WHAT IS BEAMFORMING?
We experience sound in 3 dimensions. Our ears and brain are able to calculate the exact location of sound events in 3D space using only our two ears. It turns out that all of the spatial information is coded in the air pressures that are received at our left ear and right ear. Beamforming technology achieves its remarkable immersive sound quality by knowing exactly what information needs to be delivered to each of our ears — and it does it by constructively and destructively "beaming" phase coherent signals to each ear. No other technology can accomplish transaural, sound field modeling. Headphones try but fall short because of left and right ear isolation. Beamforming delivers:
- Highly localized sound without headphones

- An "outside your head", realistic sound stage
The YARRA 3DX system is comprised of three components. The sound bar contains 12- 33m drivers and directs the beams of sound, the subwoofer reproduces all of the non-directional low frequencies, and the app, which is used to configure, control, and customize the system.
The YARRA 3DX sound projector is controlled by an app that runs under iOS and Android operating systems. It allows users tremendous control of all aspects of the system including:
- Near vs. far field mode switching (Distance Setting)
- Input selection (HDMI, USB, Analog)
- User presets setting LOAD and SAVE
- HRTF selection
- Positional Calibration (Lateral Optimization)

YARRA 3DX is easy to setup and use, simply supply power, plug in your source, and connect the subwoofer. However, we want to make sure that your first YARRA 3DX listening experience meets your expectations. so we've included a custom DVD disc [NOTE: The setup up media is also available for downloading] full of great demonstration content and instructions on how to maximize your listening pleasure.
The disc includes binaural demonstrations, 5.1 surround music, movie trailers, and game soundtracks — everything you'll need to wow your family, friends, and yourself right out of the box.
The industrial design of the YARRA 3DX system was developed over many months after extensive research and market surveys. Tandem Design — a Santa Monica-based design firm with years of experience with sound bars — provided the YARRA 3DX team dozens of potential designs, revised countless details, and produced working prototypes in both black and silver. The result is a small, elegant sound bar that fits easily under a computer monitor or beneath a large television monitor.
The YARRA 3DX has a row of LED lights along the bottom edge that can be switched on or off. Gamers will undoubtedly appreciate the ability to customize the look and feel of their YARRA 3DX system.
Another detail desktop users will appreciate are the adjustable "end stands". These can be used to elevate the main YARRA 3DX unit above the base of a computer monitor or display.

3D Audio can only be achieved if the methodology employed to realize it can be verified and measured. The technology behind YARRA 3DX was developed — and patents granted — by our CSO and collaborators at the SpatLab at UCSD in California.
SPL vs. FREQUENCY
The graph below shows the frequency response of the YARRA 3DX sound projector. The x-axis is frequency and the y-axis the sound pressure level. While not completely flat, the critical middle frequencies — where directionality occurs — is well within the expected margins.
DISPERSON USING BEAMFORMING
Of critical importance is the "focus" of the beams. This is known as dispersion and it diminishes with distance. The following plot shows how narrow an individual beam is at various frequencies.
The YARRA 3DX sound projector can reproduce immersive, 3D audio from multichannel sources and enhanced stereo from traditional content. There are multiple digital and analog inputs.
From original research and support, YARRA 3DX has been closely allied with the University of California, San DDiegoeigo. Our Chief Science Officer — and co-inventor of the patented technology inside of YARRA 3DX — spent 25 years in charge of the Music Technology area at UCSD and plays a central role in the advancement of our innovations in audio.

We specialize in the design and development of consumer electronics systems, servicing major brands with a focus on life-style audio products. YARRA 3DX as a consumer project was initiated in late summer of 2014. The research done at the Spatial Audio Lab at UC San Diego under the direction of CSO and faculty member Peter Otto, resulted in our first sound bar — the ProAV model.
OUR GOAL IS TO BRING INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES TO SOUND REPRODUCTION
The founders of Comhear Inc., the technology company behind the YARRA 3DX, envisioned a future where immersive, 3D audio could be delivered without multiple speakers or headphones. They reached out to a Peter Otto, Director of Sonic Arts R&D at the Qualcomm Institute at UCSD, and initiated a series of research projects into beam forming and spatial audio realization. The results of those projects resulted in several patents and products — AND Peter leaving his directorship after 25 years to join Comhear in July of 2016 as the company's Chief Science Officer. The path ahead for the company was clear — to develop commercial and consumer audio devices that change the way we experience sound.
The YARRA 3DX sound projector was conceived and developed in 2016 with the assistance of Peter's college friend Mark Waldrep, PhD, award-winning audio engineer, audiophile, record producer, and founder of AIX Records, under the guidance of Comhear President Perry Teevens.
Our goal is to reimagine immersive, 3D audio using innovative cutting edge technologies. We've made incredible progress towards this ambitious goal but we need your help in bringing our patented technology to you.
TOOLING AND MANUFACTURING COSTS
The research has been done, concepts validated, working prototypes assembled and tested, and now we simply need to ramp up manufacturing — the most capital draining aspect of product development. We've secured strong relationships with suppliers and know the costs needed to produce tooling, purchase materials, manufacture units, and distribute the YARRA 3DX smart bar to consumers.
BRINGING INNOVATION TO THE FUTURE OF IMMERSIVE SOUND
We know that building a state-of-the-art audio product is worthwhile and potentially disruptive to an industry anxious for change, but we want our efforts to inform and alter the consumer audio marketplace.
We want to make YARRA 3DX sound projectors available worldwide — the innovation and value of the system makes it very special. But the VAT and any other taxes associated with shipping the units to foreign territories are the responsibility of the backer and not Comhear, Inc. We've done our very best to arrange the lowest prices on shipping and handling AND made the units available at substantial savings.
Risks and challenges
Comhear Inc., the technology company behind the YARRA 3DX sound projection system has strong alliances with strategic partners that bring design, manufacturing, and distribution relationships to our product development and manufacturing. The beamforming technology at the core of the YARRA 3DX is already part of our commercial ProAV devices. The new consumer version offered as part of this campaign requires only marginal feature additions and a new industrial design. We are VERY confident that we can meet our commitments.
