(Documentary) Morel Truths: The Series
Like mindless zombies searching for brains; spring mushroom hunters are searching out brains of their own. Except these brains are mushrooms that sometimes carry thee appearance of a brain and furthermore a hunter can not just “mindlessly” search for them.
These mushrooms are hard to find if you do not know where to look. So what is this mushroom you ask? It is a Morel, and this is what I developed my entire Documentary around; how to hunt, cook, and preserve these ridiculously great tasting mushrooms. The film is everything Morel, from science to folklore, with testimonials and interviews from some of the most successful hunters around and experienced mycologists to date.
This film will walk the viewer through the fungal jungle and into your kitchen where you learn the best ways to eat and preserve your findings. No exact locations will be given on where a successful hunt was, but the details of conditions it was found in will be discussed throughly. The intent of this film is to inform as well as entertain and can be used as a how to guide on finding your own Morels Mushrooms.
The Challenges I face right now is time, I can not afford to put anymore free time into wrapping up this 3 year long project in a short frame. At the earliest at the rate I am going, it will not be completed until 2015. It's true, I have more then enough footage to simply edit may way to the end and release what I would dub "Morel Truths: First Edition". This would be the entire series using only interviews and footage of the past 3 years; however I plan to and would like to faster, add more interviews and another field expedition season in other states to show the different species of Morels. These with out a budget would be done over several different editions to the series, however with the right budget could be completed in only two editions. For $1,000 I could have the 1st edition done by spring 2013, a 2nd edition by 2014 and a 3rd edition by 2015. For $5,000 or more I could have 1st edition done by spring 2013 and would combined editions 2 & 3 for the official 2nd and final edition by 2014.
Risks and challenges
The only risk is time, right now I can not afford to take time to finish this project up in the short term. With at least a $1,000 I will be able to take off from work and business for a couple weeks to finish the project up before Spring. However if I was to pass the $1,000 goal I could afford to pay for better animations, travel to UW LaCross to interview a Mycologist who specializes in Morel; which would give the viewer a whole slew of extra knowledge that we wouldn't otherwise been there.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The documentary would be a series of 7 episodes total each starting at 5-10minutes long. This documentary will however be evolving over the next 2 years and there is going to be added material to this series. They will be released in editions.
The 1st edition will be a total run time of around 30-35minutes long (7 episodes). With the money from kick starter, I wish to expand upon this Series as I gather new footage and new interviews become available to me. so the second edition will include interviews with members of the science community and will have a total run time of 55-60 minutes long and still 7 episodes. The third edition will be the final edition and will be a run time of 80 minutes and I will be adding a new episode on the "taxonomy of a morel" making the 3rd edition an 8 episode disc. The 3rd edition will be the final edition and ultimately the final product.
The DVDs will be packaged differently and also by edition... 80% of the pledges deal with 1st edition only. All DVDs in the pledges under $50 will come with a labeled Disc in just a sleeve and anything above $50 has an actual plastic DVD case. Special and limited editions will come in Standard DVD packaging with full color graphic labels. I hope this helps... please if you have any question on any of the pledges please just ask and I will post an answer ASAP.
