Production Update for November 2018
Development of the game continues at a steady pace. Here’s a detailed look on how we’re doing in each area:
In our September production update, we mentioned that one of the feedbacks we’ve received from the alpha demo was the lack of interactivity (choices). This, along with the addition of Pamu and Jesse, caused our writing’s first draft to drop from 100% down to 70%.
The good news is that we’ve finished writing a good chunk of the new content, so our progress for the first draft is back up to 95%. We’ll be able to finish the remaining ones this month, then we'll move forward to editing.
The major bottleneck in this department is the CGs. Between the regular CGs and the Epilogue CGs, the game has a total of 106 unique CGs (not including variations). This was more than double than what we originally estimated (50 unique CGs including the More CGs stretch goal).
The reason this blew-up was because the Epilogue CGs were originally meant only as a “stylized-sketchy” type of CG (similar to the epilogue of Dragon Age or The Letter VN), but we decided to upgrade them to fully colored CGs in the last minute.
Here are some WIP Epilogue CGs:
The good news is that the basic colors for most of these CGs are done; only the final color pass and polishing (effects, lighting, etc.) are left. Our estimate is we’ll be able to finish everything by mid-February. The real risk is the next step: CG animations. We’re not sure if we’d be able to animate them all on time.
Here's a sample animation of Vel's first meet CG:
All of our BGMs are done, and we’re excited for you to hear them all in the game! To keep up the hype, here’s a one-minute preview of Love Esquire’s new main menu BGM, entitled ‘Man’s Greatest Pleasure’:
Apart from implementing finished art assets into the game, we've also been making various helper tools to improve the development's workflow. We've got about 2 weeks worth of content ready for testing, and we will be releasing its alpha build for feedback sometime this week in our Patreon.
Furthermore, we’ve begun researching how the Steam Workshop is implemented for the moddable content. This is the first time we’re allowing moddable content into our games, so we need to make sure that it’s done right.
E. Release Date:
Right now we’re aiming to release the game on Q2 2019. Hopefully we’ll be able to stick to our schedule!
F. BackerKit (RPG Expansion):
As of writing, we have raised a total of $71,000 HKD (or $9,000 USD) via BK thanks to 182 amazing backers! ♡
By the way, even though our BackerKit will close on February 2019, we will only consider the amount raised until the end of December to be a part of our RPG Expansion stretch goal. The reason for this is we need to start planning—in detail—the RPG Expansion, as it will heavily affect and possibly change the game’s core mechanics. If we want to reach our Q2 2019 target release, we can’t afford to wait until February to know if this feature will be included in the game.
Having said that, we will announce in our December production update if we have successfully reached the goal or not. Fingers crossed!
Before we end today's update, we'd like to share to with you an indie game that's made by our friends, MiSou Games. Their game is called Towertale, and it's a story-driven action game that has a heavy focus in boss battles. It will be released this coming Q1 2019, but their Steam page is already live. If this is your cup of tea, please don't forget to wishlist!
Towertale is a 2D, story-driven action game that has a heavy focus in boss battles. Fight your way up "The Tower" and challenge the bosses of each level. Unveil the mystery that lies up in its peak. Play four different stories and unlock multiple endings. Join Lionel, Faindrel, Lord Snickelfritz and "Dark Echo" in their quest to get to the top!
That’s it for our November update! The holidays are coming up, so most of our team members will be having a much needed Christmas vacation. This will significantly slow down our progress for December, but hopefully we’ll be able to hustle by January.
Thanks for reading, Squires! See you all in our next update! ♡
