Who we are

We are Jenny and Sylvain, a Swiss couple living near Lausanne, a city situated in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. We are both graduates in tourism management and passionate about spices, cooking and travel. Thanks to our online travel video guide Lytchee, we’ve had the opportunity to discover Asia, its cuisine and its diversity in terms of spices. And we’ve used that opportunity to develop our skills and expertise in spices.

We established trustable partnerships in South India, Kerala

In January 2018 and February 2019, we went to Kerala in South India to find extraordinary spices. We have established two partnerships with two local farmers living in the Idukki region, who are growing 100% certified organic spices, such as black pepper, turmeric, and cardamom, with passion and dedication for their work. We also have established another partnership with a farmer in Alleppey who specializes in growing nutmeg. We are now in the process of developing our e-commerce website, which will be ready in September 2019.

Let's consume fresher organic spices grown by local independent farmers

Who grows the spices you buy in the supermarket? Where do they come from? Why is the spice distribution chain so opaque?

Together we want to guarantee a new way of consuming spices.

You know where your coffee, tea, chocolate and bananas are coming from, but do you have any idea where your spices were grown? For instance, have a look right now at the box of cloves in your kitchen cupboard. On our box, the origin is simply stated as: “Asia, Africa.” We feel this is considerably lacking in transparency. People use spices like black pepper every day but have no idea where they came from and how they were processed and delivered.

Moreover, spices are better when they’re fresh. There are so many middlemen in the spice industry, which means the spice has often passed through several hands, travelled on several trucks, and been stored in many warehouses, increasing the transport time. When the spices finally arrive at the supermarket after their long journey, their smell and taste is (almost) gone.

In addition, when you shop in an outdoor market, the provenance is rarely mentioned and most of the time is simply unknown. Vendors are selling large quantities, frequently in market stalls, which are often lacking in hygiene and generate a loss of flavor.

Vanilla, pepper, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cumin, cloves, saffron, coriander, turmeric… Rediscover the intense and unique flavors of these spices and consume them in a more ethical and sustainable way.

Reinventing how we consume spices in a new and ethical way

Today, the work of the spice farmers is undervalued. These farmers must be at the center point as they are the ones with the know-how. They are the one who will grow extraordinary spices.

Yaksha works directly with local farmers around the world. We meet their families and get to know them as people. We maintain close ties with each of our partners by creating strong relationships and long-term partnerships. We guarantee them financial stability and better social conditions.

The current pattern of spice routing is outdated, based on a colonialist model. The present industry’s grey area benefits resellers who purposely hide product origins and unjustly increase their financial margins. Yaksha innovates by selling spices directly to the consumer while reducing social inequalities between sellers and farmers.

When you buy Yaksha's spices at an equitable and above-market price, you improve the way of living of farmers and their farming practices. The can invest into better natural way of growing spices that results into a rich biodiversity. This biodiversity makes soil fertile and healthy, which helps farmers producing high quality and natural spices for you.

It’s also essential to ensure complete traceability of spices grown on the other side of the world to guarantee transparency along the entire supply chain. With Yaksha’s model, spices will no longer be mixed together with others since the sale is direct— between the farmers, Yaksha and you.

Bring meaning to your purchase by consuming Yaksha spices!

Risks and challenges

The main challenge of this project will be selling the first big stocks (after the one of the crowdfunding campaign) in a short delay of time to respect the philosophy and values of Yaksha, which is the direct sale of fresher spices. The second risk is the high costs in Switzerland to the rent a storage room, which must be paid while making little profit the first years.
