Yakobo is my singer-songwriter project. I've been making music for most of my life, but 2015 is a bit of a make-or-break year. My plan is to go all out making a set of 3 EPs which draw together new songs and live favourites that haven't made it to the studio yet.
Yakobo has always been about community. I write the songs and travel around the country singing them on stages and street corners. But I've had the privilege of joining with lots of talented band members, artists, videographers etc. over the years. This is your chance to be part of Team Yakobo. By pledging, you can join us in the journey to get this thing off the ground. Welcome to the family.
In 2012 Yakobo released Glimpses - a self-produced debut that I spent months of my life creating. It was pretty decent, but lack of outside help from professionals and a bit of naïvety about music promotion meant it didn't quite take off the way I'd hoped.
3 years have flown by since then, and I've been writing a whole heap of Yakobo songs that are crying out to be heard. This time around I want to do them justice.
The video above contains a demo to one of the songs: Mayflower. It's a song about quitting my job and deciding to be a full-time musician. I did that 18 months ago and haven't looked back since. And while teaching the guitar and singing at people's weddings is keeping a roof over my head for now, this project is my big opportunity to create something beautiful and get my own music noticed.
So I'm asking you - my faithful fans, friends and family - to join with Yakobo on this crazy ride. Become a backer and you will receive some fantastic rewards; take a look on the right hand side of this page for the full list. But more than that, as a backer you will be an integral part of this project. I'll keep you updated as the EP's come together and share some videos and songs as they shape up. You can get in touch and ask any questions you may have about the project. I will be massively, colossally grateful for whatever support you give.
I'm talking with some great producers and musicians who want to work with Yakobo for the project, and the studio time is already booked in faith that this Kickstarter will be successfully funded!
The first of the sessions will actually be happening during May, so they will be paid for out of my own investment. The funds from Kickstarter will be used for the final recording sessions, mixing, mastering, music videos, album artwork, CD pressing, digital distribution, PR, marketing and promotion. £4000 is the bare minimum needed for this - every extra penny we get beyond that will be put into more studio time, cooler videos, more promotion etc. The more funds raised the better it will be.
Please partner with us by backing this project, and please spread the word through social media, using the hashtag #KickstartYakobo, or by good old-fashioned word of mouth.
Thank you so much for your support. It means everything!
Risks and challenges
Like any project, things can and will go wrong.
The main pitfall with recording projects is delays. There are lots of things that have to get done; recording sessions, mixing, mastering, cover artwork, pressing physical copies, PR etc.
We have the first studio sessions booked and a sensible timeline in place for the rest of the things that need doing. We've also factored in a month or so just in case things don't quite happen on time. But we won't release anything until it's 100% finished.
As a backer you will be kept up to date with all of the key developments so you can see how things are going. If you have any questions about the project, just ask!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
