Hello Shovelers and Shovelettes! There are only a couple weeks until Shovel Knight’s release date of March 31. The crew at the Yacht Club is tired; we’ve been working literally every day, and every waking hour, to make the game great. But! We’re just not quite there yet.

So, we hemmed and hawed, and made a Super Important Executive Decision. This update is to let everyone know that Shovel Knight will be missing March 31 by a few weeks to make sure it’s a world class experience, and can release on all platforms simultaneously. This isn’t a major delay, or a long one; it’s simply a stretch of time to get everything polished and aligned. While major development is quickly drawing to a close, there are still some external factors, like submission preparation, which need a little bit more breathing room before the game goes live. 

We don’t want to announce another release date until it's 100% locked in with both Nintendo and Steam, so please sit tight… we’ll announce a new, final release date very soon.  But the game is like… so done! Here’s what we’re working on in our feverish final hours: 

  • Dialogue and scripted events are being finalized 
  • Finishing touches put on level design for the final levels 
  • Overall game balancing 
  • Platform specific standards so everything runs smoothly on your system of choice! 
  • Testing, testing, testing… on all platforms!

Shovel Knight at BitSummit! 

BitSummit is a Japanese Indie game event. Our friends over at 8-4 were tearing it up at BitSummit in Kyoto, introducing some awesome upcoming games to Japan: Super Time Force, Rogue Legacy and Shovel Knight! The team from Inticreates (developers of Mighty No. 9) was on deck too, and they played! 

Here’s a shot of Koji Imaeda, Director of Mighty No. 9, finishing the demo! Nice job! He said he’s excited to play more! 

Kimo Kimo (One of Inti’s amazing artists) is checking it out too! 

and here’s Manami Matsumae ( who, as I’m sure you remember, composed two tracks! ) enjoying the game. 

Matsumae-San also took to the stage to perform a live set that included tracks from both Mighty No. 9 and Shovel Knight!

ARGH SO AWESOME WE WISH WE WERE THERE! Much love to the team at 8-4 for bringing Shovel Knight to Japan for the first time!!

Another Screen and More Fancy Art! 

We know nothing can soothe the sting of this delay (trust us, it extends our crunch mode too!), but what if we showed you a cool new screen shot? That’s right, Shovel Knight has a town! (or maybe even towns!?)

And we’ll leave you with one last piece. This is a planning sketch for a box cover that we didn’t go with. 

Just imagine the staggering presence of the final box art...

      I really have to say this bits as I was really looking forward to it this month, but, I'll take a chill pill and wait for this masterpiece to be even more finished. I really can wait to see this thing and you can be damn sure I'm buying a copy for my Wii U when it comes out. ^-^

      @Chris Niejadlik: Right now we are focusing 100% on the actual game. Once that is done we'll be able to get a better handle on the physical rewards.

      @Andrew: This is mostly for catching the more obscure controllers. Xbox 360 is already implemented (we use em to test, among others). If you'd like though, you can check out the other link (posted above) to see the instructions on how to actually obtain the info we need.

      Ok, I must be missing something because it's the most popular controller used on PC, but I don't see the Xbox 360 controller (or any mention of XInput) in that spreadsheet.

      Hi. I have two gamepads and a HOTAS setup which I can add to the list, but how do you determine the button names. Is this via some automatic interface?

      Many a game has been ruined by rushing to make release date. I doubt a single person here will complain that you've delayed it to make sure things are exactly how you want them :)

      @Yacht Club Games - Just curious what the timeframe is for all the reward tier uhh... rewards; are you holding off until all assets are ready before shipping out one giant package to backers? And if so, are you aiming for Q2? Q3? Thanks!!

      @Mikael Tedh Larsson: Hopefully it won't be that long! months sounds a little long. EU release will be a similar situation but is largely dependent on how fast we can get it through submission process over there.

      Wish it was going to be out at the end of the month, but it sounds like that you are making sure that nothing goes wrong and want to be absolutely sure it all works and is the best product you can provide.       Delay away! When the team is exhibiting concrete proof of their labors to make Shovel Knight a truly memorable game, I'm actually thrilled to wait a little longer to ensure the quality of the final product!

      While I am a bit sad to not be getting it this month, it already looks well worth the wait. I mean, I didn't back this game for the hell of it! I want this! :D
      So take your time to feel satisfied with your own game, guys. I will patiently wait, and I fidget in my seat thinking about the hours I will use to play this game! Thank you~!

      Thanks for all your hard work and dedication, Yacht Club. To hear yet again that this is basically a labor of love for you guys makes the wait worth it for the rest of us. If Shovel Knight is (partly) an homage to those great 8- and 16-bit masterpieces of old, you might as well take the time to make it their equal.

      My frothing demand for this game increases.

      Hello Yacht Club, the news of this delay saddens me, but if it means we get the best Shovel Knight possible I'm okay with it. I have a quick question, will it still be possible to buy a box later on? I know only certain backers were able to receive them but I was just wondering (I love sweet boxart to decorate my piano!!!)

      P.S. I'll most likely be double dipping, buying a 3DS copy and a Wii U copy. Strike the Earth!!!

      Honestly, I'm a little miffed at the idea of waiting a few more weeks but eh as long as it's only a few weeks I have no problem. But I swear to god if there isn't a "I'm going to bury you Shovel Knight!" quote coming out of this... we're gonna have words. XD

      Pretty sweet update! I like the town and the colorful nature of it's inhabitants, specially that horse head lady, lol XD

      And well, I'm super excited for the game, but if you guys need more time, then take it. I'd much rather games always got delayed to make sure they work right, rather than kick them out the door too son and have the overall quality suffer for it, or have game breaking glitches that ruin the save or game once someone's already hooked up on the game. So yeah, heck, if you guys feel that having extra six months to get the game perfect, just take 'em.

      And hell, not gonna lie, having Dark Souls II keeping company for now helps a lot as well ;)

      Is there somewhere we can watch Matsumae-san's performance? I know there was a video for the Mighty No. 9 song which was fantastic, and I'd like to see the one for Shovel Knight.

      I appreciate you making this decision sooner rather than on the release date. Although it brings me great sorrow that I won't be playing Shovel Knight by the end of the month, I'm hoping that the game is fantastic.

      @Jared Ettinger: That's a great question and one we aren't sure on. Once the game is out of our hands, there is still a bit of time that it needs to sit on Nintendo and Steam's plate for the submission process. Hopefully we that won't take too much time!       Just reading this "Platform specific standards so everything runs smoothly on your system of choice!" makes me remember how many lame ports the Mac platform got from not-so-nice developers. I will never forget what Team Meat did : (standard) gamepad was not working, game was lagging all the time even with decent hardware specs, full screen wasn't working properly. I bought it, saw the mess, and thought "oh no, not again…". I contacted them, and the answer was "to be honest, we are not interested in this platform and there won't be any other version". And it was true.

      So I'll wait, I'm totally ok with that :)

      I backed an awesome game because I want it to exist. The release date is actually none of my business, it's ready when it's ready ^^

      Nothing beats that feeling of getting an update from these guys to let you know it's gonna take even longer to release...that feeling of extreme annoyance. Dark Souls 2 will get me through though, I'm sure

      I was excited, and I'm still excited. I'm ok with waiting a couple more weeks with the result being a more polished game. That just means I can finish up some other games and be able to devote more time to Shovel Knight when it does come out :3

      Delays are good! I always enjoy a game being delayed because then I can focus on the millions of other games that I need to complete and so do you! Don't tell me you don't have tons of games that you have yet to touch or beaten lol! Anyways, take yer time Yacht Club! If shovel knight needs a few more weeks or months, then so be it!

      I feel badly that you had to extend your crunch time. I know how hard that can be, but I'm sure there's some relief that you can make it right the first time.

      I know my life is going to continue on just fine, knowing I will be getting something that is already looking to be a seminal work of the genre, if not of video games in general.

      You should be proud of what you release; take the time to ensure you are! Breathe!

      A few weeks isn't a big deal to me. The satisfaction a having a well made game lasts much longer after all.
