Update: Almost there! and Director for a Day reveals!

Batten down the hatches! The Yacht Club is working 24/7 to get Shovel Knight wrapped up and out the door for you lovely lovelies for our impending release this winter (soon, not the end of the year)! We’re getting more delirious as each moment of crunch passes, but that’s perfect because we’re in the midst of the final push for fun content! Namely:

  • Village and NPCs - did you know that Shovel Knight is going to have a village in it? What mysterious or hilarious things could happen there?
  • final map layout - what is the order that everything unlocks?
  • bonus areas - between stages, you deserve to run around and dig up treasure in a low-stress environment. we’re making those!
  • final ending sequence - how should the credits scroll? how long should we hold that shot for maximum emotional impact? we’re talking a high level of done-ness here.

This is going to be an insane year full of Shovel Knight releases, updates, and love. And look… boxes and boxes containing boxes for all of the reward stuff arrived! ITS HAPPENING!

Director for a Day Characters!

Anyway, without further ado, let us introduce our new characters created with our directors for a day! Our gracious benefactors turned tyrannical designers for but the briefest of moments! We talked over the design of each of their concepts, sketched art, figured out battles and patterns, pixeled, iterated, and had a generally amazing time. There’s still polish to do and tweaks to make, but we couldn’t resist sharing these iIllustrations and sprites! A million thanks to our collaborators… here is the result!

Liquid Samurai

Director: Max VanDuyne

From the shadows of the Enchantress’ lair, the Liquid samurai takes form. Beginning as inert blobs of liquid, these fierce combatants leap around the room, transforming and slashing in a whirlwind of confusion. Combining agility with maneuverability, the liquid samurai is skilled in both ranged and melee weapons. Take heed!

Reize Seatlan

Director: Danny D. Henderson Jr Aka 'Seizui'

A group of evil knights is terrorizing the countryside? Reize Seatlan is on the scene! This plucky young adventurer travels the land, helping people in need and following his own invented Knight’s Vows. But which of these knights are good, and which ones are bad? Reize is a bit naive but always well-intentioned, and we’re excited to see how his twin crystal boomerangs fare against the ShovelBlade.

The Baz

Directors: Matt & Woolie from Two Best Friends Play

The storm is coming…. With a fearsome rope whip and the toughest-looking armor around, one might think that the traveling warrior Baz would be a shoe-in to join up with the Order of No Quarter. Imagine his surprise when he was rejected! He now roams the land, taking out his anger on passersby. Could he ever prove himself strong enough to earn the title of “Baz Knight”?

Phantom Striker

Director: Steven Ness

A lone warrior, Phantom Striker appears to those that he deems worthy of challenging him. Light on his feet and wielding a rapier, this enigmatic fighter also controls the power of lightning! Always in search of an honorable battle, Phantom Striker may reward those who fare well against his cyclonic charge.

Mr. Hat

Director: Alexander "Hatman" Hatzikides

Mr. Hat is obsessed with hats, but for good reason! For although he wears a helmet, each hat that he places atop his head gives him the powers of that hat’s owner! Mr. Hat can switch from a charismatic foppish dandy to military genius in a moment, and he takes great pride in his varied fighting styles. Lately, though, there have been rumblings of an even greater warrior who wields a ShovelBlade; one with a wonderfully blue, horned helmet...

That’s it for today, everyone. Look forward to lots of new information very soon!

Man, I'm really wishing I had pledged enough to be Director for a Day now. I could have put Randolph Carter in the game! DX

If (when?) You Guys start working on "Super Shovel Knight", You have to include that pledge reward again.... >_>

    2. Jonathan Goldsmith on January 20, 2014

Ok, not really complaining, but I am a little anxious to start playing it.

    3. Yacht Club Games Creator on January 20, 2014

@Jonathan Goldsmith: Sorry for the confusion! The initial release date was set based on the goal being 75k. However, with the amazing support everyone gave us, we decided to pour the extra time/money into making the game more polished and better overall!

    4. Seizui on January 20, 2014

@Jonathan Goldsmith It was delayed, various news sites covered this. I am sure you're able to wait a while longer, right? They'll deliver, no worries. They've been pretty visible on letting us see the progress, especially if you tuned into Woz's pixel sessions on the Twitch channel.

    5. Jonathan Goldsmith on January 20, 2014

Now, it's this winter? When did this happen? Was supposed to be released last September.

    7. Yacht Club Games Creator on January 17, 2014

@mike aldinger: It is! haha. Two Best Friends Play worked out a deal to have him in that game too!

    8. Yacht Club Games Creator on January 17, 2014

@Robert Conrad: Remember! Battle is coming later! You should still get your friends over to play single player though!
@Hunter Helm: oh no...we have never forgotten about butt mode!

    9. mike aldinger on January 17, 2014

LOL _ is that Baz from Divekick? O_o

So help me God, if you forget butt-mode...

    11. Conrad on January 16, 2014

Righteous! Good to know. Gotta get a Wii U copy because I will never be able to get buddies over on battle mode on my PC!

    12. Yacht Club Games Creator on January 16, 2014

@Robert Conrad: So are we! And so the answer is yes!

    13. Conrad on January 16, 2014

I only just thought to ask this, but is the wii u version currently planned to support off tv play?

      Big fan of that feature

    14. Max VanDuyne on January 16, 2014

@YCG Oh absolutely. Gameplay experience is paramount =]

    15. Yacht Club Games Creator on January 15, 2014

@Guilherme Albuquerque: You'll be able to play it soon!!!!
@Max VanDuyne: The secret third form eh? We weren't really sure how we could make him truly different from the other 2 and it made a little more sense with our pacing to have only 2 main forms with one scary guy that could switch between them but who knows?!? maybe we'll figure something out for the flail wielding master.

    16. Max VanDuyne on January 15, 2014

Still super pumped with how the Liquid Samurai turned out! There's a part of me that's sad the third form didn't make it in, but perhaps that idea could make a reappearance for multi-player battle mode?

Hehe, regardless, I'm going to have the biggest smile on my face when I finally get the chance to face off against them in-game. =D

    17. Guilherme Albuquerque on January 14, 2014

Awesome characters, I don't even know what to say! I need to play this right now!!

Congratz to everyone involved in making these chars :)

    18. Yacht Club Games Creator on January 14, 2014

@BladedFalcon: Your immeasurable patience will soon be rewarded! We're all in the home stretch!
@Caleb Aaron Long: HAHA It might just be you, but probably not. I can tell you that no one here thought of Mr. Hat in that way during his design!

    19. Caleb Aaron Long on January 14, 2014

@Yacht Club ~ I know, right!? These designs are sooo good, I can't stop checking them out whenever I get online! But, uhh....Is it just Me, or does Mr. Hat look kind of phallic? O///O

    20. BladedFalcon on January 14, 2014

@Yacht Club Games: Can't wait either! This new update got me super excited because honestly I had forgotten all about the Director for a day characters, and I didn't expect most of them to be (most likely) boss battles and encounters. Which is pretty sweet considering I'm a greedy little bastard, and even though all the Knights and bosses shown before look fantastic, seeing even more is always exciting, and my mind is already anticipating the different kinds of tactics I'll have to come up for each one! (And again, I love that the DfaD look so different gameplay-wise not just from each other, but from the other bosses altogether.)

And yeah- I mean, I get in a game there's a certain style to have, but it doesn't mean it has to be super rigid or anything that breaks out of it is bad. Look at the 2D Castlevania entires, those games have a very defined style with their designs and characters for the most part, but every now and then you see them coming up with funny or straight up bizarre ideas just for fun, (Like the whole decorating mini-game in Harmony of Dissonance, the white rabbit in Dawn of Sorrow, The Yeti, etc.) And to me that just further adds to the personality of the game.

All this just to say that I'm fully behind with what you've guys have been doing so far, for whatever that's worth, and that every day that passes has me more and more impatient for finally playing the game!

    21. Yacht Club Games Creator on January 14, 2014

@John J. Walsh IV: He was definitely a lot of fun to work with!
@slot9: Glad we were able to make you smile!
@Robert Conrad: haha Taco Knight TOOK all the tacos...that's how he made his hat!
@Kyle Dumouchelle: We all have our favorites, personally I like the Liquid Samurai a lot.
@Squid: Send us a PM about the code and we'll work it out!

    22. Yacht Club Games Creator on January 14, 2014

@Seizui: Thanks for your amazing support, Sezui! I'm really happy Reize turned out as you had hoped!
@Jason: These guys are wandering encounters you'll experience on the level map. Think of the Hammer Bros. wandering icons on the maps of Mario 3 and you won't be too far off.
@Jesse Dylan Watson: The village really makes the game world feel like a real place! I hope you like it as much as we do!
@BladedFalcon: I can't wait till you see them in all their gameplay glory! (good point about Shield Knight and Enchantress, too)
@janju: There's plenty of unique and crazy characters in the village, I hope you'll have a really fun time exploring it. Also, thanks for the tips about shield knight. I'm not sure how many changes we are making to the character designs at this point, but I think she looks great in game. I hope you will too!
@mike aldinger: Glad you like him!

    23. Yacht Club Games Creator on January 14, 2014

@frederic tarabout: All credit to their creators! Max VanDuyne and Alexander "Hatman" Hatzikides repectively
      @Christian Bravo: I don't think I'm ready!....
@Garret: Ahaha that would be amazing! Some one tell Iron Galaxy Studios!!!!
      @Mitchel Kc Wong: whooo whoooo
@Phillip Hansen: Not yet, but we'll let you know sooon!!!
@Jacob Esquivel: They need to earn those helmets! Maybe one day they'll be full on official knights! Liquid Samurai isn't a boss but you may encounter him in some of the darker places of the game....
@Aaron Sullivan: Thanks! We are all really happy with how they all turned out!
@Jared Katz: Shovel Knight is safe! He has no time for pies, only the mission!
@DeafTard: At the very least you'll be able to beat them all up as bosses!
@J: We hae plenty of characters with exposed faces, actually. The main consideration was to make sure that the Knights of the Order of No Quarter felt unique as a group. These extra bosses aren't members of the order and have their own reasons and motivations for stopping Shovel Knight. As a result their designs we allowed to be a bit more free! A lot of thought/debate went into their designs, make no mistake!

    24. Yacht Club Games Creator on January 14, 2014

@Paul Crowley: Glad to help restore your faith in Kickstarter!
@David Mertl: hahaha Such a dapper persona indeed!
@George Morcos: Oh no! Sorry for the confusion, we made an adjustment in the update after you wrote that! We meant the current winter that we are in! NOT the one at the end of this year :)
@Caleb Aaron Long: That would be amazing!
@meiam: Reize is makin the rounds! He definitely adds a unique quality to the characters in our line-up!
@AJ Harris: Don't forget the breakfast cereal!

    25. Squid on January 13, 2014

Great update, I love all these designs. Can't wait! Though I have one question: will it be impossible to change my download code? I selected the 3DS version because that's all I owned at the time. Now I got a Wii U for Christmas, and I would prefer that version. Would I not be able to switch to Wii U before it's too late? Either way I can't wait to play this. Keep up the work, Yacht Club!

    26. Kyle Dumouchelle on January 12, 2014

To be honest I don't like Reize very much.

Mr. Hat and Phantom Striker are tied for favorite.
Regardless of which is my favorite, I must respect Mr. Hat for being an avid tea aficionado, or at least in one of his personas anyway.

    27. Conrad on January 12, 2014

      A fantastic update! Wonderful!

Needs more tacos, but still excellent.

Mr. Hat is going to be a favorite, I can already tell. LOVE his character design!

    30. mike aldinger on January 11, 2014

Holy crap @ Liquid Samurai! Amazing stuff!!!!

    31. janju on January 11, 2014

      Village and NPCs:
Can you please make a lot of NPCs in the Villiage like: Smith Knight, Nerd Knight and so on that are the friends of shovel knight?

Also about Shield Knight, i don't like the helmet to be so large. Could you please make the helmet smaller, more fit for a girl? I think Shield Knight would look a lot better with a full helmet but with long hair or pony tail showing out.

    32. BladedFalcon on January 11, 2014

Awesome update! It's very encouraging to hear you guys have come so far along, and seem to be finishing up the details ^^

And man, really love the variety and designs of the DfaD characters, each of them has a distinct charm of their own, and I like that they seem to play different roles within the game. Liquid Samurai sounds like a type of enemy you'll encounter in the Enchantress' lair, Reize sounds like a potential ally or someone to have a misunderstanding with. And the other three sound like awesome secret bosses all with distinct motivations to fight you. Really cool all in all ^^

Also, for those that think Zubaz and Reize break character from the game's style because they have a face.... Should i remind you people about Shield Knight and the Enchantress? :P

    33. Jesse Dylan Watson on January 11, 2014

Reize looks/sounds awesome! Also really excited to hear there will be a village in the game.

    34. Jason on January 11, 2014

So where do all of these guys fit in?

    35. Seizui on January 10, 2014

Awesome! Thanks for the introduction and the positive feedback! Reize turned out very good at the process! Thanks again, YCG! Hope to see the game released soon!

I'm surprised you didn't stop the new "designers" when they wanted to create characters with exposed faces.

    37. DeafTard on January 10, 2014

Oh my god! Those designs are freaking incredible! I really hope I can play as those characters or at least run into them or beat them via bosses!

If not then deliver a shovel knight spinoff game!

    38. Jared Katz on January 10, 2014

I fear Woolie might of taught Baz his technique for stealing pies.

    39. Aaron Sullivan on January 10, 2014

Utterly fantastic designs. Great work by everyone involved. :D

Jacob Esquivel on January 10, 2014

Can't say I care for Reize and Baz breaking Shovel Knight's aesthetic with their helmet/hood-less faces. At least Mr. Hats makes up for that!

So is the Liquid Samurai going to be a boss or mob in the game?

Have you guys pinpointed approximately what month you expect to be all tidied up?

freaking baz and 2 best friends xDDD

      Anyways, hype train choo choo

      Thanks @Brian Scott

    44. Garret Firl on January 10, 2014

Wait, The Baz is going to be in Shovel Knight? Maybe we could see Shovel Knight get a guest appearance in Divekick in return.

    45. Christian Bravo on January 10, 2014

The storm is almost here, everyone. Soon, the Baz will destroy us to join the No Quarter as its only member!

    46. frederic tarabout on January 10, 2014

Omg those characters are SO GOOD. Favs are liquid samurais and Mr.hat... Pure genius.

Zubaz looks amazing, and so do the other characters. I hope at some later date the character roster for battle/challenge mode is expanded to include the secret Boss Characters and the minibosses. Also, I love the "Z" on 'Baz's belt.
