Update # 13: More Unlocks, More News... and Mole Knight!

Posted by Yacht Club Games (Creator)

Wow!  The last 24 hours have been incredible.   We’ve jumped 20k in the last 2 days and hit 2 stretch goals, and we're gaining steam! Not only that, we’ve been receiving a ton of awesome fan art for our Official Shovel Knight Fan Art Contest ( submit now! ).  This week is our last, so we’re jam packing it with goodies.  So from now on, expect a little schedule at the top of each update so you can easily stick with us!  Here’s the first:

Reddit AMA  - Tuesday at 1PM EST/10AM PST -

Destructoid Demo Twitch Hosted by Foom - Tuesday at 4PM EST/1PM PST -

Art Contest Deadline - Thursday, April 11th at 8PM EST/5PM PST - email yours to

Playable Boss Knight Unlocked!

It must be getting hot in that armor, because Shovel Knight is burning through these stretch goals like nobody’s business. Now we’re going to have a playable boss knight! We are really excited about this one because it opens up so many gameplay possibilities. With this NEW character, you can expect different mobility, play style, and a slightly altered story. When the time comes, we’ll put the whole Order of No Quarter up to a vote and let the community decide, but we don’t have specifics yet!

Linux and Mac Version Unlocked!

Hipsters and neckbeards everywhere rejoice- you no longer have a weirdo computer! Linux and Mac will both be receiving Shovel Knight on their wonderful operating systems.  And we won’t be delivering some tragic, buggy port where the sound doesn’t work.  This will come with all the goodies, and we’ll do the best integration onto your platform we possibly can!

Super Best Friends Play - SHOVEL KNIGHT

So the most incredible thing just happened - Two Best Friends Play! on YouTube just did the most hilarious playthrough of our PAX demo:

We LOVE these guys.  The video gets better and better as you watch...we were rolling on the floor by the end of it.  Show these amazing guys your support, and check out the video and subscribe to their channel!

Check out this rad art Erin made to show our support:

Introducing... Mole Knight!

The shovel may rule the confines of man-made gardens, but in the wild, the titan of tunneling is the mole! Mole Knight embraces this truth wholeheartedly. With his modified drop-forged armored claws, he mockingly tears through the earth with brute strength! Mole Knight calls the subterranean Lost City his home... an ancient abandoned metropolis. Shovel Knight must pass through the Lost City, but chances are slim he won’t be challenged to see who is truly the master of digging.

Pros: Great eyesight, shrewd, high endurance

Cons: Obsessive personality, gets sweaty in armor

Just backed! So looking forward to this game on Wii U. Any ideas on what the game pad will be used for?

I have a question about the art contest! Is it alright to enter more than one submission?

    3. Daire on

@ Diggle Hyde- if I was to guess by the silhouettes on the main page, I'd say YC are already ahead of you on one idea ;)

    4. Michael Robert Thurman on

@Alex Adams Hahaha makes me think of megaman X

    5. Alex Adams on

For some reason, I want to see a Penguin Knight...

    6. Michael Robert Thurman on

A couple of questions! Is there anyway the backers could get the ability to play the demo from PAX, after the funding period is over? Please! We are dying here! Second, I'm leaving for an LDS mission to Argentina for two years, starting in July. Will I still be able to use the code I get for the Wii U version of the game when I get back? Hope to hear from you soon!

      @YCGames: I'll be expecting a GROUND-BREAKING duel then.

@Tabari: It might have to do with various youtubers and livestreams intrudocting the game to a rather large crowd.

People that love older NES titles (espcially Mega Man) cannot resist this game. Most people I introduced to the game liked it on the spot. It's like resupplying drugs for game veterans.

Wow I'm shocked by the large increase in backers and funds in 2 days. If you don't mind me asking Yacht Club, how did the project get such a large increase in that short amount of time?

    9. Yacht Club Games Creator on

@Doomspeaker: Doens't he? Can't you imagine that Mole Knight thinks Shovel Knight is an amateur and that he fancies himself the only true mover of earth?
@Diggle Hyde: That's perfect, that will fit in with a lot of entries we've gotten so far!!! Seriously...

    10. Diggle Hyde on

My drawing skills are not that good. I can only do doodles.

Linux will surely brin in some more backers as well.

Damn, the mole fits perfectly into the theme of shoveling.

    12. Yacht Club Games Creator on

@Diggle Hyde: cool ideas! You gonna turn them into fan-art?
@Erik de Vos: Thanks! Those guys are great, huh?
@Johnny Vila: Glad you like him, Johnny!!!

    13. Johnny Vila on

      Mole Knight! Great! :D

    14. Erik de Vos on

2 best friends play- got me here! I loved the demo! Instantly backed.

    15. Diggle Hyde on

Drill Knight: all steampunk knight leaving behind the manual labor of shoveling, replacing the shovels with the steam powered drill - considered as heretics by the codes of Shovelry.

Miner Knight: wields a pickaxe instead of shovel. An expert in handling explosives.

    16. Yacht Club Games Creator on

@Sonny Sukanen: The 3DS version is gonna be great!

    17. Yacht Club Games Creator on

@Jesse Dylan Watson: Who are you going to vote to play as? Once all the knights are revealed we'll be having an official pole but what are your thoughts so far?
@jorlinn on Linux: I can tell you only that we'll be looking into as many platforms as is feasible for the project... Our main concern is that the game will run on the device at 60 Frames per second. We aren't sure of our system requirements yet but we'll let you know if something like that works out!
@Chris Gronlie: Thank you soooo much! I hope that game manual hits that special nerve in your nostalgia bone!
@Drake Oak: Don't be bummed!!!! Once we have our announced platforms supported we'll be able to pursue other platforms more heavily. Seriously, we want to be on everything and it is a very real priority for us as we develop the game.

O-ho-ho man, you would not BELIEVE... how much this rocks.

Looking forward to the 3DS version. Keep up the good work, guys!

    19. Drake Oak on

I'm kinda bummed I won't be on my ps vita, but I pledge 15 because my 3ds needs to be dusted off.

    20. Chris Gronlie on

Great stuff guys. Upgraded my pledge from $15 to $50 today :)

    21. jorlinn on Linux on

      @Yacht Club Games:
Considering the resolution shown so far and the fact that you have made your Linux/ Mac stretch-goal, would you also be considering a port to the OpenPandora?
That handheld computer has a screen resolution of 800x480... and runs on the ARM platform (TI OMAP3, 512MB RAM).

    22. Jesse Dylan Watson on

Had to up my pledge to get Steam version along with 3DS. Obsessive.

So thankful to everyone for making the stretch goals happen! New Game + and Boss Knight Mode are going to add so much!!

    23. Yacht Club Games Creator on

@John Howard: You should have it on loop at full volume till September...That's what i'm doing
      @DuskShark: har har har
@Chris Bustamante and Dominique Losier : Well if you are just interested in the music, we'll be allowing all of our backers early access to virt's bandcamp site where you can download the whole soundtrack as a pay-what-you-want fashion!
      @Alejandro del Rio Verduzco: Intriguing!
@Michael La Bombard: Lol we want to show love to EVERYTHING! Give us some time. The best path for that would be up-voting the steam greenlight! With enough support we'll be able to explore putting Shovel Knight on other platforms!
@Melvin Biteng: $10 will get you any of the DRM Free Versions, Mac, Linux, or PC. $15 is for the steam and console versions
@Wesley Garland: Don't worry, there will be many more to come! I wouldn't cast my vote just yet!!!!

    24. Gift of Gab on

Along with Melvin's question. Would we have to add another $15 to our pledge if we want Shovel Knight two platforms. In my case my 3ds and Mac :3

    25. Cat Fight on

mole knight is my favorite so far! will definitely be voting for him. can't wait to see who else is to be revealed. . .hope we get that 2nd playable boss knight!

    26. Melvin Biteng

so question, for the mac/linux ports, would that be part of $10 pledge with the PC version or along with the Wii U and 3DS at $15? :) glad we're crushing the stretch goals!

    27. Michael La Bombard on

I see we've reached the Mac/Linux Stretch Goal! That's great! But why no love for Chrome OS? Or Android? I've got a Chromebook and I think android/chrome support would be righteous! (I'm getting the game on 3DS/WiiU otherwise) :]

    28. BladedFalcon on

@Dominique Losier: Check the FAQ down at the main page, you might find a nice surprise there ;)

    29. Dominique Losier on

If we could have a digital OST in there !

    30. Chris Bustamante on

This looks amazing... I'm super excited to see you hit more of your stretch goals!

My only sadness is that the only tier with a soundtrack starts at $60... the music sounds sooo good! Can't there be a $30 tier with the soundtrack? ;)

    31. Lunept_Lundea on

I see this knight had to dig deep to be a part of the Order of No Quarter.

    32. John Howard on

I started watching the video because I was so hyped for this game. I turned down the sound after the first couple minutes. About halfway through I decided to turn it off. I was hoping to show my kids, but I guess they will just have to wait to see it until September. *le sigh*
