This project was launched to help us fund the creation of a giant anaglyphic 3D mural. Anaglyph 3D is a form of stereoscopic 3D, created by merging two chromatically opposite colored images. When the images are viewed through corresponding colored 3D glasses, the two separate images are merged together by the visual cortex, giving them the perception of dimensionality. This illusion is known as the Pulfrich effect.
3D murals are very rarely attempted due to their technical difficulty. Although there is several ways to paint this wall, we will be using a very common method often used when painting large murals. We will project the image on the wall, one color at a time, and with the use of a scissor lift outline and fill in each color individually. As you can image the color of the paint is extremely important. For this mural we will use the most common colors associated with anaglyphic 3D, red and cyan. After much trial and error we have found the perfect color paints to enhance the dimensional effect of the final mural.
This project has been a collaboration between many talented people. We would like to expand that collaboration to our local community and all of our backers. That said, we would like to give all of you the option to vote on the final background of the mural. Above you will see a mockup of one of the designs. We will be posting three more concepts on Xxist’s Facebook feed and asking for you to vote on your favorite design.
The mural will be painted by two of Baltimore local artists, Xxist and Jake Warford, who both come from very similar backgrounds. Both are US Army veterans who worked in the military intelligence field and gave up highly prestigious and successful civilian careers to pursue their dreams in art. Jake is currently pursuing a BFA at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and Xxist was recently accepted into a dual masters program between Johns Hopkins University and Maryland Institute College of Art, where he will be earning an MBA/MA in Design Leadership. Jake and Xxist are resident artists at the landmark Copy Cat Building in Baltimore, MD. Together the two have several decades of experience and would like to see this project launch their careers as professional artists.
As part of this exciting project we will be documenting the creation of the mural, interviewing some of Baltimore’s best street artists, and sharing with you testimony of how art in the public space can influence and inspire its local environment. There are some extremely talented individuals signed up to film and produce this documentary in some very creative ways. We will also be collaborating with some musicians to engineer an amazing soundtrack for the film. We will be updating you on its development as is progresses.
If any of our backers live in the area and would like to participate in this documentary fell free to contact us!
As a special thanks to all of our contributors we will hold a special event shortly after the completion of the mural. The party will include a collective art show showcasing work by all of the individuals associated with this project, a meet and greet with the projects artist, and a sneak peak of the street art documentary, depicting the mural being painted over a time lapse. For all of the contributors that RSVP to the event your artwork will be available to be picked up at the unveiling and you will receive a pair of 3D glasses to properly view the mural.
We have built a comprehensive list of rewards to encourage as much participation as possible from the kickstarter community. All backers will receive the spoils of their reward level as well as a special thanks in the credits of the short street art documentary depicting the mural going up.
