As a big board game fanatic, one of my favourite "couple's activities" to do with my girlfriend is playing the Lovecraftian themed Eldritch and Arkham games. We love playing these games because they have a great theme and the storyline is different with each game play depending on where the mechanic of the game takes us. The games come with standard D6 dice among other components which is nice and all, but there is also a "flaw" with that. Why? A large portion of the game is based on rolling dice to complete tests, and the result of each test is primarily binary - either a success or a fail. So we thought that a dice with a simple indication of success and failure makes more sense rather than a standard D6. This is what we called our "Dice Dilemma"
Our simplest solution to address the dice dilemma was to just purchase the official dice (ones that did not come with the original game). However, the official dice are still not 100% clear and you need to purchase 3 times the number of dice to have enough dice for the different status conditions. Additionally, the official dice were impossible to get as they are constantly out of stock, which added to the challenge.
After doing all of this, we had this brilliant idea of designing and making our own dice to address our dice dilemma once and for all.
The solution - Introducing the Cucu Dice
A one-size-fits-all solution for Lovecraftian themed Eldritch and Arkham games or any other games that require D6 dice roll for binary resolutions.
(Thanks everyone, especially KassFlak, for pitching in on the layout update)
The Cucu dice can be used for any game that requires the player to roll a D6 to produce a success/failure result from each dice. It is an all-in-one solution to clearly indicate the success and failure of dice tests. However, the main design was focused on performing attribute tests in Lovecraftian themed Arkham or Eldritch games.
How the CuCu Dice Works
Roll xD6, 1 out 6 Chance for Success (For example, Roll for 6)
Simply roll x number of the Cucu Dice, and count the number of Red Die Faces for the number of Successes.
Roll xD6, 2 out 6 Chance for Success (For example, Roll for 5, 6)
Simply roll x number of the Cucu Dice, and count the number of Green Die Faces for the number of Successes.
Roll xD6, 3 out 6 Chance for Success (For example, Roll for 4, 5, 6)
Simply roll x numbers of the Cucu Dice, and count the number of Blue Die Faces for the number of Successes.
Other Rare Situations:
Add 1 to the result of a die
Simply roll x numbers of the Cucu Dice, and count the number Successes as listed above. Then look at the corresponding coloured number on the non-success dice to and add 1 to the appropriate number.
On the corners of each face of the dice are number indicators, which allows bonus addition if certain condition permits. They are color coded to match the colored face you are rolling for. However, they are also small enough to not distract from the main design on the dice, which is what you will be paying attention to 99% the time.
Roll xD6, 4 out 6 Chance for Success
Simply roll x numbers of the Cucu Dice, and count the number of Non-Green Die Faces for the number of Successes.
Roll xD6, 5 out 6 Chance for Success
Simply roll x numbers of the Cucu Dice, and count the number of Non-Red Die Faces for the number Success.
Example of a Roll 6D6, Success on 5 or 6 (rolling green):
About the CuCu Dice
- The dice will be produced on a 16MM black plastic dice base.
- The side will be laser engraved to prevent the design from fading over time, maximizing dice longevity.
- The dice face will have flat edges rather than traditional round edges to maximize design area (we want and you know you also want the largest possible picture on each dice face).

After speaking with many players of the game and going through several design phases, we have a near finalized design for the dice. In addition, we are willing to make changes to ensure that your opinions and design polls are heard.
Currently, we have contacted a number of credible manufacturers to establish a sound basis for production of the dice. In order to bring this project to live, I will need to make a minimum order of 1,000 units. Together, we can achieve that.

Risks and challenges
The main challenge faced by the project is production timing as it is customary for Kickstarter projects to be delayed. However, I want to make this a relatively easy process for all of us. All of the pre-work and negotiation are in process by the launch of the campaign, and I will soon be ordering initial samples so I can have some images up before end of the campaign.
The other challenge is dice quality as I want to make sure that everyone gets the best quality dice possible. I have several manufacturers lined up, so if one does not meet the quality standard, we have backups ready to go.
There are other unforeseen challenges that could arise throughout the project, but we will ensure to provide updates on anything noteworthy in a timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
