About this project
Rockwell Granger isn't exactly a bad guy. On the wrong side of 40 after turfing out of the military, he’s drifted from town to town and a series of dead-end kitchen jobs and quasi-legal freelance work. But his longtime dream of owning his own restaurant has finally come true, back in his hometown of Portland. Rock should be happier than ever, but the reality of his dream has a nasty habit of dragging him down. His customers are uncultured savages, he's not making enough money to pay back his loan sharks and they’re forcing him to do something morally iffy or they'll take his truck. And possibly his thumbs.
Harper Marbury isn’t exactly a thief. She works half a dozen side hustles to pay her rent at the Split Apple Co-Op Loft where she shares overcrowded floorspace with dozens of spare changers, young families, traveling musicians, burnouts and scam artists. Developing a love of cooking by throwing the random ingredients found in the Co-Op’s fridge every day together to feed her roommates, Harper’s been nurturing a dream of what she could do in a real kitchen, with real ingredients. When she breaks into Rock’s truck, mostly it’s to get out of the rain, but when he doesn’t show up, she opens up for business. Just to try it out. Just to see what it's like to cook in a real kitchen, with real ingredients.
When Rock busts Harper, he hires her on instead of kicking her to the curb, inducting her into the arcane rituals of food cart society, a land where every cart collective is a gang vying for territory and rivalries are resolved with food truck duels rolling down the middle of Hawthorne with baseball bats. While Harper learns the ropes, Rock begins his job for the Bardems, searching for the identity of a rogue food truck operator who’s invading the Bardem’s territories. Together with Harper, as his conscience and helping hand, they’ll navigate a world of secret menus, food pirates, culinary femme fatales, curmudgeonly dads, shadowy figures, creeps, foodies and 5 star ratings, trying to uncover the secret before the Bardems burn Rock’s world down.
SHORT ORDER CROOKS is a 5-issue, full-color comic that’s equal parts comedy, crime story and cooking comic. The first issue is due out in June 2017. We have future arcs we would like to do to tell the complete story, but we need your help to fund this first arc and help us find an audience for our weird little book.

Short Order Crooks was initially created with Kelly Sue DeConnick (Bitch Planet, Pretty Deadly) back in 2010. After many years of other work getting in the way, Kelly Sue giving me her blessing to carry on without her and publishers reacting in mild confusion at the pitch, it is a comic that can only happen if we do it ourselves. We're asking for your support. Which is where Kickstarter comes in...
All money raised will go towards paying artist George Kambadais and colorist Lesley Atlansky's page rates for all five issues (120 pages) of SHORT ORDER CROOKS and to give backers some unique rewards. Since this is 100% creator-owned, there's no publisher's financing propping us up. The 15 pages we've done so far have been made on faith and spare time. Our Kickstarter goal is the bare minimum needed to bridge the gap that allows George and Lesley to be paid enough to commit to working on pages full time and to get copies of all five issues in the hands of readers. If you've liked any of our previous work or you support indie, creator-owned books or if you're looking for a comic that is a little off the normal path, we have a book (and some rewards) for you.

PRINT COPIES- The print issues of SHORT ORDER CROOKS will only be available during this campaign as part of a Kickstarter-based print run. All copies will be signed by writer Christopher Sebela and numbered and mailed out upon completion of the issue.
THE SECRET MENU
- A digital pdf/cbr with almost 100 pages of behind-the-scenes process and artwork of issue #1. The Secret Menu will include the full script, as well as George’s inks and Lesley’s colors without lettering. Concept and sketch art, the original series pitch, character descriptions, a digital copy of issue 1 with notes and commentary and more. Almost all this material is exclusive to the Secret Menu. Perfect for completists or anyone interested in digging deeper into the comics creative process.
VARIANT COVERS- Each issue will be released with a variant, with cover art provided by a different artist every month. Our amazing roster of artists includes Claire Roe, Brian Level, Jonathan Brandon Sawyer, Robert Wilson IV and Chris Visions. These variants will never be made available again except as possible bonus material in whatever collected edition we come up with.
- Cardstock, nice as heck, perfect for a large comic or a cookbook.
SHORT ORDER COOKS PRINT
- A two sided cardstock print, 6x9, by series artist and co-creator George Kambadais. Sometimes you're a Rock, sometimes you're a Harper.

SOME FINE PRINT
Due to ordering requirements possibly leaving us with leftover stock, that stock will be sold after the campaign with preference given to retailers and then backers, all profits made going back into the book.
Print versions of Issue 1 will go out within a month of the campaign's completion, while we await the money to reach us and begin making orders. The remaining 4 issues will be coming out every 4-5 weeks with an eye towards completion around October or November of 2017. Updates will be provided on Kickstarter on a regular (no less than monthly) basis.
We are looking to raise $16,000 minimum to pay artist George Kambadais and colorist Lesley Atlansky for their work on the book. At this minimum we raise, they are working at reduced rates and I am writing and lettering the book for zero money. If we can reach our stretch goal of $24,000, everyone will get paid their full page rate.
There are no unnecessary costs in the mix, this is the absolute cheapest we can make a 5-issue comic series for while still paying everyone a proper rate for their work. Here is how the money breaks down. It's pretty simple.
The Stretch Goals
Stretch goals are where campaigns get into trouble. We're doing our best to avoid that by not promising anything crazy. To be completely transparent, we would love to go above the goal not so we can get gold edges on our pages or embed holograms into the pdfs, but so that both George and Lesley can be paid their full working rates and I, hopefully, can be paid some compensation for writing, lettering and running the campaign. So we're trying to make this fun, but also not something that we actually have to pay a ton of money to make happen. In that spirit...
$18,000 - George, Lesley and I will record a director's commentary for all five issues, where we talk over each other and maybe bring up an interesting factoid every now and then. Listen to us slowly get tired of each other since we all spend most of our time working quietly by ourselves. Everyone who has given at the $5 and up levels will get mp3s of this to listen to as you read along. George and Lesley will get paid more.
$20,000 - Everyone who gives at the $5 and up level will receive a pdf book of recipes from famous comic book creators. Eat like the stars! George and Lesley will get paid more. I will get a small payment.
$22,000 - An illustrator will be hired to fancy up the comic creator's cookbook.George and Lesley will get their complete page rates. I will get a little more money.
$24,000 - Wow, we totally don't have to worry about anything at this point. Thank you. That's very nice of you. We will hug you at a con. The entire creative team will be properly compensated for their time, which hardly ever happens.
Future Stretch Goals
Any money raised beyond the 24k stretch goal will go strictly to paying the creators and put towards production of the 2nd arc of SHORT ORDER CROOKS. Rewards at this level and above will mostly be digital, perhaps with some slightly nicer paper stock for the print issues.
Risks and challenges
All three of us are experienced in our respective fields in comics. We've hit deadlines for all kinds of publishers on time and we've worked on personal projects with similar swiftness and focus. We know what we're doing. We've got everything set on our end. The first issue is almost completed and will be done and ready to deliver within a week or two of the campaign wraps. We're doing our best to hit the ground running and have all five issues to you by October or November of this year.
