X= Rivista d’Artista is a collaborative artist’s magazine addressed to the independent art scene and created by four young Italian artists. Each article is in English and Italian. To every issue corresponds a launching exhibition bringing the collaboration with artists to real life.
Our first issue, X=Explorations, was co-created with 4 artists from 4 different countries, and it came out on February 2016: strictly self produced, it was printed in 50 copies and it is available for free on our website www.xrivista.org/x-explorations. Last April we have curated the collective exhibition in Paris with the participant artists - still on self-production.
Why this Kickstarter? We count on you to achieve two goals:
- Printing our 2nd issue X=BORDERS, co-created with 9 artists, an even more ambitious project that is worth a bigger print run.
- Organizing the collective exhibition in Fall, launching the issue in Brussels, Belgium.
Do you want to know more about how X= is different from a traditional art magazine? Watch the video and keep reading...
When looking at an artwork, have you ever wondered what technique the artist used?
Ever felt like asking what the inspiration and starting point of that work was?
Interested in knowing what the creative process was?
X=Rivista d’Artista is a space for creation that invites you to broaden your outlook on independent art and the way you experience it.
Inspired by the medium of artist’s books, X= is not just an art magazine, but uses the magazine as a medium of expression: format-layout-typography-paper-colours-binding, all the technical elements of a magazine, usually fixed and permanent through the issues, are the tools we use to make the promotion of art a work of art itself.
For every issue, the editorial team sends out an open call for artists interested to work on and in the pages of the magazine. We don’t only want to talk about the artists, we want to develop the whole magazine with them, our starting point always being the material they send in: a continuous exchange between the editorial team and the artists - that’s why we’re proud to consider each issue a co-creation.
Each issue is a visual narrative revolving around an outline, a field to investigate given by the editorial team to the artists. Our aim is to offer readers different artistic approaches to the main theme providing, at the same time, a "frame story" that allows a coherent and cohesive reading.
Do you feel like reading X=Rivista d'Artista? Wondering how? X= isn’t only printed in numbered and limited edition, but it’s always (and always will be) available online - for free.
It’s December 2014. Picture the auditoriums of Visual Arts at the Venice University, picture tons of creative ideas and four young Italian (students) artists: Francesco, Giammarco, Stefano and Olmo. Fastforward to graduation day: all four move to different European cities to continue studying or begin working. Paris-Brussels-Ghent-Florence. And still wanting to work together.
So that’s how we created X=: an international magazine from the start, that jumps across borders, geographic or artistic, from its very foundation…
In March 2016, Jasmin, living in Toronto, joined us to take care of the production side of the magazine making our editorial team even more international.
Our first issue, titled X=Explorations, was a successful experimentation lab that combined the languages of 4 artists from Chile-France-Iceland-Italy.
62 pages, 50 numbered copies, no advertising, strictly self-produced. And 1 collective exhibition in Paris.
That’s it! We took our work out of the pages of the magazine and into an exhibition space organizing a collective exhibition of the 4 artists. Imagine walking through an art book? Yes, that’s what we did. That’s something more that distinguishes us from traditional art magazines: we strongly believe that art should be physically experienced, that’s why we want to launch every issue by the means of a collective exhibition of artists who shared the pages of our magazine.
The time has come to release our next issue: X=Borders.
We are now willing to question the meaning of borders : not only geographical, but also between genders, different artists techniques, humans and animals and much more…
We launched our open call in June 2016 and gathered the artists to work on this new issue. We started off with the same 4-artist structure as for X=1 - but a combination of ambitious thinking and enthusiastic responses from the art scene made us decide to call 9 artists on board, making it a project more collective than ever.

Half of the donations of this Kickstarter campaign will be used to print X=Borders, while the other half to host our show this Fall.
When we self-financed X=1, we could only print few copies. However now we’ve got the efforts of 9 different artists in our hands, and we believe their work should be reaching a much bigger audience. That’s why we’ve decided to print at least 200 copies of X=2 - all of them numbered, of course.
Oh, and the art show? As for the first issue, we consider it to be a crucial moment to bring our collaboration with the artists to a close, while launching the issue at the same time. And X= is an international magazine, remember? That’s why we’re organizing our next exhibition in Brussels, with all 9 collaborating artists. November 2016, save the date. We certainly don’t want to stick to one city or country, do we?
We’ve already been working on X=Borders for three months, by the time this fundraising campaign endsX=Borders will be published online, for FREE. It’ll be ready to be printed, and that’s where you come in.
By helping us out, you’ll be able to virtually flip through X=2 online, and see the quality and uniqueness of the work you have supported. Have a look at our first issue X=Explorations - we promise to take X=Borders to the next level.
We have already contacted a print shop for X=Borders. In Paris, a new independent bookshop already awaits X=Borders. And as soon as it’s on paper, we’ll be working on the art show in Brussels.
But all of this will only be possible with your help !
Risks and challenges
We’ve accepted the double challenge of the independent art world and the independent publishing world - and we’re not backing out of it, but we need your help.
Since our academic studies we have been confronted with the art scene and we've come to believe that one of the best way to stand to it is to engage in a common creative process.
We don’t want advertisement on our pages because our model is the artist’s book, and we consider X=Rivista d'Artista a piece of art - and that’s how we preserve the artistic dignity of the artists’ work.
We believe in the necessity of giving more honest spaces to independent art and X=Rivista d'Artista is our effort to make them real.
X=Borders is just the first step; we walk a difficult path that eventually will lead us to even bigger challenges: finding a publisher granting us the liberty we think essential for art, finding a corresponding distributor, confronting us with the market.
But we won't lose heart, we want to build this step by step at our own pace, first of all caring to deliver a magazine always for and with independent artists.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
