Following the U.S. Congress’s attempts to defund Planned Parenthood, the hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion became a viral conduit for abortion storytelling, receiving extensive media coverage and positioning real human experiences at the center of America’s abortion debate for the very first time. The online momentum sparked a grassroots movement that subsequently inspired countless individuals to share their abortion stories in art, media, and community events all over the country, and to begin building platforms for others to do the same.
Today Shout Your Abortion (SYA) is both an official organization and a loose, decentralized network of individuals talking about abortion on their own terms. The Shout Your Abortion movement is proof that talking about abortion on one’s own terms can be powerful, liberating, and ignite a chain reaction of truth-telling.
The Shout Your Abortion book chronicles the inception and continued growth of this powerful nationwide movement. The stories in its pages are beautiful, diverse, and come from all over the USA. Often people think they don't know anyone who has had an abortion. This book proves otherwise in a personal, direct, and creative way. The current political climate necessitates that more and more of us talk about and listen to the abortion experiences of our selves, friends, neighbors, partners, colleagues, and loved ones. This book is for you!
The book is completely finished and ready to head to the printer. SYA is working with visionary publishers PM Press and Between the Lines to make this happen, as larger publishing houses won't normally publish such radical content, especially with the legality of abortion in the USA in such dire straits. The Shout Your Abortion book is full-color, 256 pages, and printed in the USA. The cost of printing and shipping this book is roughly four times the cost of PM's average book. We believe the release of this book is incredibly timely and important. We don't want to limit the book's exposure or circulation by charging a high, unaffordable list price. That's where you come in.
This Kickstarter will help get the book to the printer and into as many hands as possible—the more pre-orders we get, the more copies we can print! By supporting this project, you'll help us complete and distribute this gorgeous piece of documentation to people all over the globe.
"Shout Your Abortion embodies everything that society so desperately craves in this moment: compassion over cruelty, fact over fiction, and storytelling over silence. The shared experience of one in four women powerfully illustrated on these pages is tangible evidence of our collective strength when we join hands and speak our truth together." —Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America
“Shout Your Abortion reflects what makes me most hopeful for this next century, that there’s a whole new generation of young people who refuse to be judged and shamed about who they are, whether it’s their gender identity, their sexual orientation, or what they do with their body.” —Cecile Richards, former president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America
Shout Your Abortion is the first comprehensive story of the movement, as well as a collection of the creative work that SYA has inspired, interviews with abortion care providers, and a blueprint for readers to begin organizing in their own communities. Shout Your Abortion is both an artifact and a call to action. With Roe vs Wade on the brink of reversal, the act of shouting one’s abortion has become explicitly radical, and this work is more critically and urgently needed than ever before. You can help us spread the word - abortion is a normal and common part of the human experience, and it affects all of us.
SYA is grateful to have received a grant from Abortion Conversation Projects, which will allow us to send the book to dozens of abortion clinics for their waiting and recovery rooms. This Kickstarter will help us continue sending this book far and wide, disrupting the expectation of silence and shame before it takes root.
This book will be published with Friends of PM, the 501(c)3 nonprofit wing of PM Press. Pledges made from the U.S. will be tax deductible, minus the cost of your reward. If you choose no reward, the total amount of your contribution is tax deductible. We will send you a digital tax acknowledgment letter at the end of the campaign. Thank you!

Risks and challenges
Talking about abortion is in itself a radical act and inherent risk, especially with Roe vs Wade on the verge of reversal. We are already working with an established and trusted printing house to make the book a tangible reality. The challenge in distributing the Shout Your Abortion book lies in continuing to break down barriers of silence and stigma — making talking about abortion and selling, owning, and displaying books about abortion a normal part of the human experience.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
