WHAT IS THE WINESHARK?
The WineShark is the first ever red wine hyperaerator - that is, it is a wine aerator that actively agitates the wine in the glass to incorporate oxygen and make the wine taste better.

HOW DOES THE WINESHARK WORK?
MORE ABOUT THE WINESHARK'S DESIGN
The WineShark is designed to fit seamlessly into your hand and makes aerating a glass of wine simple and easier than ever. The WineShark features a rechargeable battery, and inductive charging base for compact counter-top storage, and a detachable wand for dishwasher-safe cleaning and easy travel. Plus, the WineShark is simple to use - all you have to do is pour yourself a glass and “shark it” for 6 to 8 seconds to immediately enjoy all the flavors of your favorite wine.
The WineShark gets its name from the shark fin-shaped protrusion on the body, which serves the dual purpose of making the WineShark easy to handle and holding the inductive charging coil that powers the device. Connected to the handle is a detachable wand that reaches into your glass for mess-free and easy aeration. The third part is the propeller (or, as we call it, the shark tail) which is attached to the wand.
The specially designed propeller spins and agitates the wine, making the entire aeration process extremely quick and highly effective. The shape of the shark tail's fins and the speed of rotation were designed to maximize oxygen infusion while minimizing foaming in the wine. It's both simple and fun to use.
The WineShark is for anyone who loves a delicious glass of cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, malbec, or whatever your favorite red may be. From young adults in their first apartment to frequent party hosts to bartenders to wine connoisseurs, the WineShark is for you. We don’t care if you’re drinking a $10 bottle or a $180 bottle, we don’t discriminate. Whether you’re reading a book, relaxing in a bath, or spending a night with friends, grab a bottle of your favorite red and enjoy it more with the WineShark. We know you love your wine, and we want to make it better for you.
NEW TO KICKSTARTER? HERE IS HOW IT WORKS
Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology.
Every project creator sets their project's funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers' credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.
In exchange for supporting our project, we offer rewards based on your level of giving - the chart below shows our rewards for this project, and you can sign up for a reward by clicking one in the boxes to the right.
A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON AERATION
What Exactly Is Aeration?
Aeration is the process of incorporating oxygen into wine. When a wine is corked up in the bottle, certain compounds (for example, sulfides, sulfites, and tannins) can build up and mask the aromas and flavors of the wine. When the wine comes into contact with the air, oxygen gradually forces these compounds out - some people call this "letting a wine breathe" or "open up." This process happens naturally if you open up a wine and let it sit, but it can take several hours - and honestly, who wants to wait that long when they are craving their favorite red wine?
How Does An Aerator Help?
Aerators are devices designed to speed up the aeration process. There are a wide variety of aerators on the market, but existing solutions end up being awkward, messy, fragile, time-consuming, difficult to clean, and just an overall pain to store or travel with. Additionally, most must be used before you even pour your wine - how do you know a wine needs aeration before you taste it? As a result of these drawbacks, after a few uses most aerators wind up in a drawer or cabinet never to be seen again.
OUR IDEA FOR A BETTER AERATOR
After using many different aerators over the years without finding much satisfaction, we wanted to create one that was a true game changer.
To be truly useful, an aerator should be:
- Highly effective
- Able to be used in your glass, after the wine has been poured
- Easy and fun to use
- Simple to clean
- Easy to store
In the course of our research into aeration, we read articles and articles stating that, scientifically speaking, the best way to aerate wine is with a blender. We tried it out, and were blown away by the taste and smell of the wine, but the wine was frothy and we wound up with a dirty blender to clean. That is when we decided to take this method and develop an aerator that met all of our other guidelines.
We hired an industrial design group based in Charlotte, North Carolina to assist us with designing, prototyping, and ultimately manufacturing our device. After a lot of trial and error, the WineShark was born.
WHY KICKSTARTER AND WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP US
We are a small team with a big vision. Kickstarter is amazing because it allows those who believe in what we are doing to help bring our dream to life by supporting our efforts. By backing the WineShark project on Kickstarter, you enable us to put the WineShark in your hands first!
With your help, we can make the WineShark a reality. We need cash to cover the costs of tooling, manufacturing, and the first round of production. By backing us today, you’ll receive one of the first WineSharks off the production line for a fraction of the market cost. We have a wide range of pledge levels that appeal to everyone’s tastes, so pick the reward that most appeals to you.
Please don't keep the news about WineShark to yourself! Share the love with your fellow wine-loving family and friends on Facebook and Twitter. We’re sure they will be more than gracious to you for helping them make their favorite wine better. Plus, if we don’t reach our goal, there won't be any WineSharks for anyone!
MOVING FROM PROTOTYPE TO PRODUCTION
We have completed our patent-pending design and have developed several fully-functioning prototypes. We are now ready to move into the production phase.
The funds we raise on Kickstarter will be used to pay for all of our tooling expenses and to cover the minimum order requirements of our manufacturer. We will also use part of the funds for packaging, logistics, and shipping so that we can get the WineShark into your hands as soon as possible!
Projected Production Plan:
Manufacturing Sourcing (Nov. - Dec. 2013) - We plan to utilize our design partnership to identify the right manufacturing partner. If our project is successful enough, we would like to manufacture the WineShark in the United States, which is more costly but could greatly accelerate our production timetable.
Manufacturing Qualification (Jan. - Feb. 2014) - Once a contract manufacturer is selected, we will need to validate the manufacturing process so that we can deliver the finished product within defined specifications and tolerances.
Packaging Qualification (Feb. 2014) - Once the design is completely finalized, we will confirm the packaging specifications and perform live shipment tests to confirm packaging suitability.
Kickstarter Order Production and Fulfillment (Mar. - Apr. 2014) - The manufacturer will produce the orders for our Kickstarter backers and the and the WineShark will begin shipping throughout the world.
We founded WineShark in order to find a solution to a problem that had always bothered us. We hope you will support our journey with a pledge today!
Can we do this? It might be the most important question to ask a start-up. It is as much or more about the team executing the plan as it is about the idea itself. Here is a closer look at our team:
Taylor Hayden is a corporate attorney that has spent the past 7 years working closely with entrepreneurs, start-ups, and small to mid-size businesses. After working with several large law firms in Texas and North Carolina, Taylor founded Boost Business & Legal Advisors, a different kind of business law firm that focuses on providing affordable, practical assistance to the under-served small business community. Having assisted numerous businesses in finding their own success, Taylor has always dreamed of pursuing his own business venture. The WineShark is that venture.
Sarah Hayden is an accountant that previously coordinated logistics on numerous development projects at a California-based wind energy company. Sarah is extremely skilled at overseeing work processes and managing cash flows and the financial health of projects.
Industrial Design Partnership - We have been working with Enventys, a Charlotte-based invention consulting company, to design and build our initial prototypes. Enventys has a solid foundation in product development and design on through the manufacturing stage and is staffed with talented electrical, mechanical, and industrial engineers. Their China office will be vital in the sourcing/manufacturing process. Enventys also produces the Everyday Edisons show on PBS.
Risks and challenges
Locating A Good Manufacturer. We are actively looking for a quality contract manufacturer to mass produce the WineShark. We hope to produce the WineShark in the United States but have had difficulty locating a company that can produce the WineShark domestically at a reasonable price point. We will do our best to push for a timely production.
Quality Control. There is always the risk that we won’t be satisfied with result of a final production sample. In that case, additional iterations or improvement of the manufacturing process might be necessary. This is a rather unlikely scenario; however, it could delay the manufacturing process.
We know that good communication and transparency is the key to an awesome and fun project. While unforeseen issues can always arise, we won’t be making the same mistakes twice. And if we do run into any problems along the way, our backers will be the first to know!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
