A hand-crafted hardcover anthology including all original issues of "The Willows" magazine from 2007-2010 — PLUS:
Thirteen years ago, a small group of artistic and literary misfits joined forces to create a publication unlike any other.
In the flickering firelight of their library, editors Ben Thomas and Skadi meic Beorh envisioned a hand-crafted magazine of macabre neo-Victorian art and fiction...
And so, The Willows Magazine was born.
For four illustrious years, The Willows provided a home for contemporary writers working in the weird tradition of Arthur Machen and Algernon Blackwood — for poets inspired by Charles Baudelaire and Edgar Allen Poe — and for strange artists inspired by Aubrey Beardsley and Harry Clarke.
At long last, the stars are right — and the time has come for The Willows to be reborn as a hardcover anthology!
Featuring a wealth of classic stories from G. D. Falksen, Sarah Monette, Lawrence Dagstine, and many more — along with brand-new tales from award winners Gemma Files, John Langan, Brian Evenson, Orrin Grey and Jesse Bullington; plus a new introduction from editors Ben Thomas and Skadi meic Beorh — this anthology will be a collector's item you'll be proud to treasure.
Every page will overflow with weird fiction, eerie poetry, macabre art — and highly diverting Victorian advertisements!
Pledge your support, and give The Willows new life — in a volume you’ll be proud to display in your own firelit study.
Risks and challenges
Each publishing project brings its own unique challenges. Small typographical and layout errors can become apparent relatively late in the process, requiring last-minute changes — while logistical issues can occasionally delay international shipments. That said, all design and layout work on "The Willows" was completed during the magazine's release, nine years ago; and I, Ben Thomas (editor of "The Willows"), have those original files in hand as we speak.
All the original authors have already been contacted about appearing this anthology — and (though a few of them appear to have vanished off the face of the earth at some point in the past 10 years), every one who's responded has expressed unreserved, enthusiastic support for this project. In fact, many of those authors are currently supporting us as backers!
All that remains is to finalize a new design for the cover, then assemble the existing issues into the final anthology. I vow to maintain transparency throughout this process, recognizing that you have placed your trust — as well as your investment — in my hands. Your support means the world to me.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
