About this project
"But afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day and night of misfortune all your warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea."-Plato, Timaeus/Critias
A Single Day and Night of Misfortune chronicles all the events leading up to Plato's dialogues. Building upon this lost history, I want to take you into a world where the Kingdom of Atlantis is at its peak. The current Emperor is in the 7th year of his reign and every thing seems to be in line with their lavish lifestyle.
You'll follow the Emperor as power leads to greed resulting in the freeing of an envious demon, dating from the time of Poseidon himself, that sought to destroy Atlantis long ago. You'll see power struggles, consequences of lust, betrayal of family, battles for the throne, the threats of the creatures from the North, and the birth and growth of the Emperors three sons.
- Format: The novel will be 4 chapters in a single bound book : Father of the Cliff, A Spirit Loose, A King's Bane, and Conflict of Kingship.
- Style: I wanted it to look really rough and put the "graphic" back in graphic novel. !!WARNING: There is blood and slight nudity!! I've talked to a few folks about the "grittiness" of the work, which is on purpose. (Positive feedback!) I'm kind of a nut about history and reinterpretation of famous events with slight changes. My goals with retelling of old stories has always been: to represent that history as if told from an ancient epic text or tablet. (Not a sharp, pristine, modern day comic)
The images below contain work from the first chapter of Volume 1: Father of the Cliff. A creature from the North, the Wyvern, has been attacking the citizens of Atlantis and the Emperor decides to personally accompany his army to the Forest of the North to eradicate this enemy of man.
Check out rewards and Swag below!
A Single Day and Night of Misfortune is my third limited edition graphic novel. After positive first reads, I have decided to transition from traditional B&W(see below), my usual preferred medium, to a full color novel.
I am a self-taught artist/animator with a growing passion to continue to self-publish my works both on eReader websites and crowd funding platforms like the one you see here.
STRETCH GOALS, YOU SAY? If my initial goal is reached every backer will receive PDF copies of my other unreleased ancient epics: "Surpassing All Other Kings" (Epic of Gilgamesh) and "Stelle" (Dante's Inferno in Manga form) Additional Stretch goals will be announced as the KickStarter progresses. FEEL FREE TO CHECK OUT MY BLOG HERE FOR SOME STORY RUNDOWNS AND RANDOM ART BY ME!
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO, YOU SAY? About 80% to printing the books and the rest for the swag.
Outside of the the copies of the first volume given for review, all of the rewards in this Kickstarter will be exclusives and will not be offered elsewhere.
Kickstarter remains a prominent place where indie artists like Will Deonne can expand their audiences and produce their passion projects. Your support of indie comic books/graphic novels makes it possible for these projects to become reality.
We thank you for your time and continued support.
Risks and challenges
The only real challenge is the completion of the comic. This Kickstarter will allow time to be freed up from other projects to produce the novel and it's spin-off. The product should be easy to reproduce and the printing should be a simple task as we have a company lined up already for both the paperbacks and the hardcovers. I'll keep everyone posted on updates as they become available.
As for the comic itself? It's currently in the last phase: coloring. Again, as I traditionally work with B&W, the book is finished in it's entirety.
If theres ever a complaint about a product you receive I have no issue sending you a new version.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
